Holmes on Homes is good, the one show on HGTV that my husband will watch with me. I also like House Hunters International.

They've got HGTV in the company fitness center, closed-captioned so you can read it while listening to your iPod!
The show that I always find funny is the one where people can't sell the home so they bring in a new realtor and a home stager. The realtor always tells them to drop the price. The home stager sweeps out any indications that a family lives there (e.g., all the kids' toys), puts all the clutter into storage, and makes mostly quickie surface changes. If the cabinets are light, paint them something dark, and vice versa. Same with the walls. A piece of plywood spray-painted black becomes a minimalist coffee table. Re-paint the front door and the mailbox. Put bland "art" on the walls. Cluster a bunch of votive candles from Wal-Mart on the dining room table for the Open House.
The realtors and prospective buyers come in. They ooh and ahh over the light, airy rooms and large open spaces. With one exception, every single episode ends with "(Couple) are very happy with the results of the open house and are hopeful that they'll receive offers soon." The exception was one couple who got a tenant from the open house, which enabled them to move into the larger house they wanted.
Oh, yeah- I loved the home remodel with the high-tech robo-toilet, pretty much operated by pushbuttons, including the bidet. The husband said his parents were afraid of it.

House Hunters International are my absolute favorites. Also like Divine Design, that lady designer has incredible style, have not seen her do “ugly” room yet. She must have an unlimited budget too! I would like to hear what she spends on her projects, it must be high dollar.

[/quote] LOL no kidding Once in a while she mentions that she’s opting for this or that due to budget restrictions, but yeah it definitely is not the “two days for two K” kind of show.

Also like Divine Design, that lady designer has incredible style, have not seen her do “ugly” room yet. I agree about not seeing her do an ugly room but she never talks about what was spent to achieve the look. I suspect almost all the rooms are way out of my budget. I do watch house hunters once in a while and like others have said, the must have granite and stainless comments drive me nuts. Also the comments about the paint, flooring and other things that are easy updates make me think most of these people do not have a sense of reality.

These shows just make me appreciate my house more. It's bigger and less expensive than anything they show on HGTV. Whenever they get in my price range, Sandra shows them a lot of condos . . . as if condo fees shouldn't be considered part of your house budget.
If you are ever home in the mornings (or like to dvr interesting shows), check out "If These Walls Could Talk." People who have bought older homes discover the stories of the people who used to live there. One of them usually has stuff left behind. The show brings in an appraiser, and the results are often very gratifying.

My husband put a tennis ball under the kitchen cabinet and then reattached the kick plate (toe kick - whatever they are called.) This that will make it onto "If these walls could talk"??

The problem with watching these shows is that it can put you on an endless quest of updating which never ends. Yeah, DH and I have talked about this. Keeping your house updated- not just the changes to the house itself but the new furniture, artwork, fixtures, etc. that have to go with it- just isn't worth it to us. We do something every year but it's frequently maintenance, such as replacing old windows and putting insulation on the attic floor. Other than that, I scrape off wallpaper and popcorn ceiling finishes, and paint. It keeps me happy and it's relatively cheap. Last weekend I finally removed the wallpaper below the chair rail in the MBR and painted, and now the paint above the chair rail doesn't go well with the new color. That will take me another weekend and a gallon of paint. My kind of home improvement.

My DH and I watch a ton of HGTV and DIY. Absolute favorites are Holmes on Homes (HGTV) and Sweat Equity (DIY). They've given us some confidence to try projects we otherwise would have avoided. For instance, neither one of us is afraid to tile, we've watched it so many times.
But yes, they do inspire us to want more and better things. Thankfully, our home is fairly new and needs no major renovations.

House Hunters just makes me laugh - as others have said - where do these people get their money?? And so predictable - Granite, stainless, double sinks, walk in closet, open floor plan, man cave, big back yard.
Just on the open floor plan - do these peeps realize how loud an open floor plan can be??

Yeah, and the other thing you see time and time again, they almost always buy the most expensive house that was already "over" their budget, and then when they show the house after they've moved in, not only have they remodeled every room, but they have ALL new furnishings! Puhleeze....I love HGTV, but, you've just gotta laugh at a lot of these people. I really loved some of the older shows, but right now one of my favorites is "Disaster DIY". I like the show, but I also like the eye candy. Bryon is HOT!

I don't get DIY with my package, so I have to be satisfied with HGTV. My favorite House Hunters International was an episode in Edinburgh where they had English subtitles. I've been to Edinburgh enough and have a Scottish friend, so I didn't need subtitles, but it was hilarious. She wants me to tape it the next time it's on and send it to Scotland.

The ones I like are the people looking at a house only a few years old and commenting how much updating it will need. Do they really think they are going to be updating the house they buy every few years to chase the latest 'hot' look?

<snip> Or, that in some cases a person gets older or becomes disabled and instead of just leaving things be and realizing that maybe it won't be up to par and just live and accept it. While it's certainly tolerable if people never change their cabinets and keep the ugly linoleum in the kitchen, many times they also neglect things that have to be done in order to keep the house from falling apart. It takes money (or skills and agility) to keep the roof gutters clear, repair the roof when needed, replace leaky windows, and other vital chores. On my drive to work I see houses in a poorer area where the owners haven't painted in years and the bushes are growing up and obscuring the house. After while, if you do nothing it shows. I agree with you on the superficial updating, though. When DH and I bought this house, it was a plus for us that the kitchen hadn't been updated in the 20 years since it was built but was functioning perfectly well. We could do what we wanted, on our own schedule.

The only show on HGTV that I watch any more is Real Estate Intervention. I love it when people put an unrealistic price tag on their house and have no idea why it's not selling! I'm more into DIY these days. Especially Renovation Realities, DH and I watch it and wonder if these people are really that stupid and feel sorry for the camera crew! One where they cut a gas line and the HO suggested lighting a match to see if it was leaking gas, or the one with the kitchen designer who broke down crying, or the guy who wasn't sure if he had flipped the breaker and decided to just go ahead and cut the power line while wearing gloves to protect himself! DH and I are in full agreement that when it comes to some things, it's much better to just pay for it! But I do like $10,000 in your hand, they go through a cost proposal and show the HO what they could do to save some money and it's usually pretty realistic! Now I want to do some renovations

...same guy who used to do Monster House, right? We liked that show, too... best episode of that was the "super sofa" one, where they put basketball court flooring in the LR and a photo mural on the wall... it was great...

I miss the original Designing for the Sexes (with the three designers) - so many good ideas! The new host/designer is so blah.
Wasn't the original Designing for the Sexes done by one person named Michael (don't remember last name). He was an amazing Designer! I loved watching what he could do with a room and two peoples different ideas. I think they always had a budget, but not sure as it has been many years since he was on.
I consider Selling New York real house porn. I love that show. Would love to know how these people can afford the prices of the places they show. Are there really that many well to do people in NY?
And on a side note - two bathrooms are necessary in our house. My husband uses his as the "reading room". I would have to go the the gas station some days to use the facilities otherwise. :

I am blanking on his last name right now too! I met him several years ago. He did a talk, Q&A and book signing at a local furniture store. Very, very nice man! He signed his book for me, but I totally can not remember his last name

Michael Payne? Yes!! that is his name. I was so sorry when he left the show. My dream was to have him design a room for us. When he left, the show seemed to loose it's flair. He had an elegance about him and his design that was unmatchable by anyone else.

When I bought my house, I had to stop watching because there were things that I wanted that was impossible to get (location).
But now that I plan on buying myself another home in 5 years , I will watch again.

I was so glad when granite, stainless, and walk-in closet knocked "man cave" off the lips of America.
I love HouseHunters and now watch it from HGTV's website.
I marvel at people that actually want to live high in the sky. If you are ever in Chicago visit the women's restroom in that bar if its still there on top of one of the skyscrapers-floor to ceiling window wall facing the stalls. That will cure you of ever living higher than the second floor. Horrible experience.

I'm really into Income Property but it freaks me out to think of always putting in laminate and solid countertops and stainless steel applicances for tenants!!! Does anyone have a tenant that doesn't just trash their place? How do you repair a huge gouge in laminate from some tenant damaging it with their furniture, dog, kid whatever?

Knock on wood (LOL) the laminate I put in my rental a few years ago is pretty tough and not yet marred. I do have the rest of the box stored in my garage in case repairs are needed. I wouldn't put in expensive hardwoods, that's for sure!

Ever notice how on the homebuying shows like House Hunters, Property Virgins, My First Place, almost all the house toured are perfectly staged and spotlessly clean? Rarely are there personal objects or furniture that is distracting. They must send a crew in beforehand to overhaul all the houses. I know that's not how houses looked when I was buying my house 7 yrs ago. And to add a touch of realism, they should have the seller and their family sitting in the living room during the showing. I bought when the market was hot, a good house was only on the market for a day or two so you toured them whenever you got the chance, but that was always very awkwarkd.

Whenever DH does something around the house and finds some dumb something the previous owner has done, his comment is, Wonder what Mike Holmes would have to say about this.
We once took the old chair railing off in our kitchen, it was put up with 4 in. nails!
