Time to wean myself off HGTV again. I stopped watching that channel several years ago because it just makes fixing up/redecorating the house too tempting. In the past week or so, I've bought a storm door, 3 light fixtures, new cabinet hardware, 2 lamps, 2 end tables, a new plant and a new kitchen faucet!
Now I want to replace my ugly green formica counter tops. Or, I could just get a more time consuming cheap winter hobby.

I suppose I could return to the gym. I've been patiently waiting for the resolutioners to burn out and stop going.

Small Space Big Style - I loved that show! I got some great ideas. Although I wasn't terribly impressed when they showed the single young artist who lived in an 1100 square foot loft. Ummm - 1100 square feet for 1 person is a small space?

The show that I miss is "My House Is Worth What?" or some variation of that title. People had renovated their houses over the years, usually using the equity as an ATM to fund the improvements. Usually, the owner was thinking about further renovations. The show featured several renovations. Each time a real estate agent told them what they would list the house on the market for. It's understandable why they don't still have this on.
This isn't to be confused with "Most Bang for Your Buck," which featured 3 high end renovations of the same area (kitchen, etc.) for the same amount of money in the same city. The designer talked about the design choices, and the realtor talked about the effect on resale. The realtor determined who got the best ROI (which was never 100%).
The one I have come to dislike is "Designed to Sell." You can only do what they do with $2,000 if you have a team of live-in carpenters, etc. It's all materials with no cost for labor, but they act like anyone can do this.

I love this channel. The people on House Hunters crack me up!!! Single person saying I MUST have 3 bedroom 3 bath home. LOL Or the older couple saying it was totally impossible to live in a house with ONLY 1 bathroom.

I like some of the older shows that are on in the early morning like Design on a Dime, FreeStyle, etc. I don't like some of the choices they make, but I did enjoy seeing how they came up with the ideas and how they repurposed some items.
I do miss Gardening By The Yard - that guy was a hoot!
I like House Hunters Int'l - it's interesting seeing what houses are like in other countries and what the prices are like there. I really get turned off by all these 20 somethings who are dating or engaged and buying a house together. They all want huge houses with granite, stainless steel appliances, master suites, etc. I always wanted to know how much they earned to be able to afford these houses and find out if they're still living in them since some of the shows appear to be from around the peak of the bubble in housing. I wonder how many of them were/are in forclosure?

I stopped watching HGTV when they stopped actually renovating anything. Now they just go around buying houses. That bores me.
I love the DIY network, and my favorite show is Renovation Reality (??) They just send one camera guy (or small crew) out to some guys house and film them doing a project. No experts, no designer, no host, no bogus budget where painting a whole house magically costs $12. It is the very best show for me to get uninspired! They never make budget, they never make their timeline and they always have all these wacky things go wrong. Because it is just a couple of regular people, they never know how to fix that wacky thing - like putting up a bookshelf, they bust a pipe. What?!
Every time I watch it I say to my husband "Let's hire someone to ..." I've done enough home projects to know that it is the best, most realistic view of DIY there is. They are always working at midnight, and getting up at 6 am, and yelling at each other, and running back to the store 25 times. Awesome!

I love HGTV's programs about people buying foreign vacation retreats with a million-dollar budget. We always try to guess which barely passable million-dollar vacation spot they'll consent to settle on. I also like the people who are getting their first place who have like $40k to spend ( yes, this is a gross exaggeration ), but want 3 bedrooms with walk-in closets, 3 bathrooms, an acre lot, granite counter-tops, and of course, the MUST-HAVE stainless steel appliances. I do enjoy the show with the designer that re-engineers homeowners' basements into income-producing apartments. That part is extremely intersting.

I hate the 'stainless steel appliance' fetish. I like the look, but it makes me cringe when I see someone walk into a kitchen to exclaim 'ooohhhh...stainless steel' when the appliances are clearly low-quality appliances. I've even people do this with appliances that clearly have some kind of faux stainless steel film on them.
That said, I really like the HGTV buying home shows 'My First Place, Property Virgins, House Hunters'. It is amazing how much you can learn about a person (or relationship) in thirty minutes, and sometimes the houses are neat as well.

I have been an HGTV addict for years. I love Income Property and House Hunters Int'l especially when it's locals buying. I get bored with the shows where it's Americans going to Central America or the Islands looking for an American-style home just with an ocean view. I used to really like Designed to Sell but as a PP pointed out, it got silly that they made such a point of staying within a budget when they had a professional crew tearing down walls or constructing built-ins. Plus the new designers and hosts became increasing insipid and annoying. I now like to watch The Unsellables and Get It Sold, I think they give people a better idea of how to prepare their home for sale and the budget is dependent on condition of the property and value of the home. I wonder how much shows like these have influenced the buying public. Do enough people watch them that it has made an noticeable impact that the average buyer now has higher expectations when looking for homes?
Back when HGTV had gardening shows, does anyone remember City Gardener? I think it was shown more recently in Canada. I used to just love that show and the host Matt James. He would transform this little postage stamp size backyards in the UK into beautiful gardens. It was so much more realistic and geared to the type of space most people have than a $50-100K landscape makeover on an acre lot. I've seen a couple episodes of his US-based show but they didn't have the same fun vibe as the UK show.

I'm an HGTV addict myself. I get such a kick on House Hunters with these young couples who have a $500,000 budget for their first house. How do they get this kind of money? I especially enjoy My First Place and My First Sale. Those seem more realistic to me. I wish I had Sandra Riamano from Property Virgins helping me with my real estate purchases.
