My parents' house was a split floor plan, and pretty sizeable. The good news was I had my own space - they couldn't hear my music, or my friends, or even if I came and went. The bad news was that they couldn't hear my music, or my friends, or even if I came and went.

later- 26x36 is the footprint of the whole house. So both upstairs and downstairs are 26x36. Boring old Yankees that we are, we typically do not entertain guests in our bedroom. I thought it might have been where you were hiding when the company was around

We have vacation land up North. We plan on building on it eventually. DH goes though fits where he starts looking at ways to build. Well, one of them was a home construction company. The model he was looking at had a MBS and a gorgous kitchen. I told him I wasn't ever going to want to come home to our house (4 bedroom, 1.5 baths) and hideous kitchen. He promptly downgraded what kind of houses he was looking a.

My parents have a 5 room deluxe type master suite. They have a sitting room you go through to get to the bedroom (yes it has a mini fridge, sink, coffee maker, etc) the master bedroom itself, a master bath (two separate vanities, a toilet room, huge tub and one of those showers that are like 6'x10' with multiple shower heads blasting you from all around, a huge walk in closet (similar to that picture but without the extra chairs) and a separate laundry room for just their laundry.
When my family first move to town in 1984 they bought a half finished spec house and my dad promised my mom in 5 years he would build her a new house. His theory is that every year after that 5 year deadline was up her plans for her new house grew in size. They didn't build their new house until 2003 so she has 14 years worth of increases and she made the most of them. It's a beautiful house but WAY too big. They moved in a few months before my younger sister got married. None of us kids ever lived in that house with them.
It has two full eat in kitchens, two laundry rooms, formal living room, formal dining room, two family rooms, home offices for each of my parents, 4 full guest suites (with attached full baths), a game room, a playroom for the grandkids (with a bookcase that is the secret entrance), a three stall garage attached to the main house, a tuck under garage (visible from the back of the house only) were they store the lawnmower and my dad's tools, a huge storage room, and a library. It's right at 8,000 sq feet for 2 people.

I figured out why you need 3 chairs in your closet.
One to sit on and put on your shoes.
And the other two to throw dirty clothes on.
