My husband and I did some shopping together today.
We went to look for a watch for his god-daughter's graduation from medical school. Although Kenneth Cole makes some really attractive watches, I told him that she probably wouldn't keep it "forever" as she might if he bought her a Seiko, Citizen, etc. I think we actually picked out a $400 Burberry. I thought they just made raincoats, but I am obviously wrong.
I bought a couple of bottles of Gain detergent for $3 after price match and coupon. He didn't care, but mentioned that he has always used Tide. I told him that as long as it was a brand name I really respected, it was fine.
So then I bought Colgate toothpaste for 25 cents (as opposed to $3.99 regularly.) He was like, "But it's not Crest." Yes, I like Crest, too. I like "almost free" better. It's not like Colgate is a no-name toothpaste. I am sure almost as many people might chime in that they prefer Colgate as would Crest.
So do you care about brand names? Not just for clothes, but for other stuff? I do on some level. New Balance shoes fit better than almost any other brand. Walmart clothes suck whereas Liz Claiborne usually gives me a nice fit.

Before I get onto the topic, you may want to do a little behind the scenes research on whether the god-daughter actually uses a watch. It's a generational thing, but a really high percent of people under 25 or 30 don't. They look at their mobile phone. Just mentioning it so he doesn't spend $400 on something that never, ever gets used. That's a lot to spend and a very nice gift.
I'm fiercely brand loyal on certain things, but not all. Like you, shoes and certain fitness clothes have brands I like more than others. Don't care about toothpaste and for cleaning stuff, tend to go with CR recommendations.

I use Tide free because I know i won't break out or have a reaction. Actually, a lot of things are like that. I also like my toilet paper, the way my garbage bags don't smell, and the way my toothpaste tastes, etc. ... But clothes, I really don't care at all ... I may be weird. I also agree on the watch thing... I don't know anyone buy my husband who wears a watch anymore ?? ... but maybe its still common in a professional occupation? Although i'd tihnk most people carry a digital organizer of some sort... (Maybe you can just make a month's payment on her student loans )

I'm particular on certain things, but most stuff I'm cool regardless of who makes it. My brand loyalties have no rhyme or reason.
I like Loft pants, but Banana Republic skirts. My running shoes are Puma, but I don't care what else I'm wearing when I run. Toilet paper is Quilted Northern, Cottonelle, or a particular grocery store brand. I'm fine with the cheapie paper towels. Most of my electronics (phone, tv, laptop, mp3 player) are Samsung.

I'll try just about any brand, but once you have won my business, I do tend to go back.
So, I don't care what brand it is, but I do like the time savings of going with a known commodity when I shop

You guys don't think a doctor uses a watch? I can't imagine otherwise. We went to a lot of trouble to make sure it had a second hand and the date.
Don't they have to time stuff? And since I can't remember the day of the month, I would think the date was important.

Um, no? Most of the timing stuff I've seen the nurses do. But maybe that's just my experience.
Again, I don't know anyone under a certain age who wears one and just didn't want you to waste that money. If she's polite, it's not like she'll tell you she doesn't wear a watch, she'll just smile, say "thank you" and tuck it in a drawer.

You are probably right, Milee. My students don't use a watch.
But when I ran that by my husband, he said ALL his doctors time stuff. It's probably because he is an extreme case (LOL), but it might be because his doctors are all older.
Anyway, he will buy her a watch whether she wants one or not. I convinced him to give her a gift receipt and not have it engraved. This will definitely be a time when "it's the thought that counts." He is also giving her a $1500 check. That was our compromise because he really wanted to buy her a Rolex, and he can't afford it. I was like, "Is that so she can pawn it to pay her student loans?" <g>

I think it depend on what kind of medicine is practiced, but 1) doctors have to wash their hands a lot... 2) they have to be careful what they wear around certain types of equiptment I think?... 3) watches themselves cannot be cleaned easily, so if you are around germs all day, you probably want things that can be cleaned easily...
I'm not trying to down your gift. She may want to wear it outside of the office.
ETA: Didn't see you last post... that sounds like a good idea.

I buy timex watches. I like Indiglo so i can see them in low light. When the battery dies, i toss the watch and buy a new one. There are some name brand things i prefer. I don't care for the shoes at Walmart. They seem cheap, fall apart and dont' fit well . I only prefer brands when the brand proves to me that there is something about it worth paying a bit more for. Some brands are simply my personal preference. I like Pepsi over Coke or generics and only buy that. I like certain brands of foods but some generics are fine for other things.

Sentimental values: given to me by my grandparents that are no longer with us, same for my godfather. One was from my stepfather and one from my mom when I graduate college. Those two I wear when I visit home. The last one is from my wife when we just started dating, the least expensive one. It is a Fossil but again can't get ride of it because it was given to me by her

Brands matter to me for all sorts of things, actually.
It matters to me for the cars we drive. It matters to me for the electronics we purchase. It matters to me for the shoes I wear (New Balance ... my fave!) and it matters to my wonderful DH for the mayonnaise I buy. (It must be Best Foods, he says.) We're also picky about paper towels and toilet paper and canned chicken noodle soup and brands of toothpaste and bread and shampoo and laundry detergent and almond milk. We're even picky about cat food brands and cat litter brands!
It's not a status thing. It's not even a price thing, most of the time. We've just come to know and like and appreciate certain brands for certain things and our motto is, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it!"

There are some products I purchase, are must haves, I deem good brand names. I must have Tide for me. I must have Scott's bath tissue or one other relatively good store brand tissue I consider as well and do buy. I must have name brand electronics according to my son's choice because I have no clue in tech matters. My foot wear must be well made shoes, though I don't have a preferred brand, but name brands they are. I love a well made purse no matter the brand name. Cleaning supplies I am up in the air about. If I find a good generic brand I will consider. Oral care.. Toothpaste- I use coupons to purchase name brands, yes. If no coupon I still purchase name brands. Pre-rinse mouthwash I go cheapie. I purchase one particular store brand mouth wash and peroxide and make my own pre-rinse and use the mouthwash as plain' ole mouth wash. I thought all vehicles were brand name? No? I am so clueless when it comes to that area.. If brand name mean the BMW's and the Infinity's and such, then no, I do not do the brand names.. Is Chevy considered a-non? Watches. I have two brand name watches that were gifted me, but I wear an Avon one that was also given to me about six seven years ago every single day. It works and tells time like a charm.. It's worth nothing and is silver-toned and has not one bit of tarnishing.. I buy Target night wear.. I have no idea why I fell in love with Targets' sleepwear, but I have. I launder them with TLC though. I know they are not 500 per square inched stitched is why, but wash well when on delicate or permanent settings.. Slipper wear must match my nightwear. I got lots of cheap-o footsies for the winter months and well made slippers from stores like TJ Maxx.. I like brand name eyeglass wear. Foods? I have certain ones that must be brand name and the generic store brands is by process of elimination.. I may try the product once. If I like it I will consider adding it to the grocery list, if not, that product will more than likely not appear on my grocery list again. I hate to say I'll never make certain purchases. I know a family who used to live in my area who said she'd never purchase or eat or drive something in each of those categories for she or her family.. She and her husband lost their jobs over a year ago.. I rest my case while she had to eat her own words. If you read my gab. Thanks. May you have yourself a merry good morning, afternoon and night!

Not really brand sensative except for a few items. I'm hard on shoes and have a hard time finding ones that are comfortable (I spend a lot of time on my feet at work) until I found ECCOS, now that's all I buy. They cost more, but I know they'll be comfortable so I don't waste money on shoes I won't wear. Have to have a good quality toilet paper. I found one type of jeans that fit and that I like. DH (Mr Cheap) loves to buy generic groceries, and in most cases I'm find with that, except for the generic bread, which has a weird taste to me. I stick to one type of shampoo, but I think that's more habit than anything else.

Some things do have to be a certain brand, some just don't for me. Large appliances have to be Kenmore, mayo has to be Helman's, etc. But some stuff I just buy whatever is cheaper.

We will generally try anything, once. However, there are some brand names, like Heinz Ketchup that we will absolutely not do without. If no one else measures up, we go with the brand name.

We use ERA because DH broke out in a rash when I used Tide or a generic.
Stuff I will only buy - Kleenex - I just don't like the way the other brands feel. It's probably in my head but it's not a hill DH is willing to die on, so we buy Kleenex.
I refuse to buy Kotex - I actually prefer the Target brand. I prefer Comet cleansing powder for my kitchen sink. And Colgate over Crest.

I could totally care less 99% of the time. There are some brands I like better than others. Hellmans/Bestfoods mayo for one. I still wouldn't spend $5.99 for a jar if Kraft was on sale with a coupon for a dollar though. ;D I don't have any prefrence as far as detergent. We have no allergies to anything so that isn't a problem. I feel like they all do about the same job so why would I pay extra for one vs the other?

I have loyalty to brands that are of high quality, but I don't have any loyalty (at all) to labels. I won't carry a purse or pull a piece of luggage or wear a piece of clothing if it has a logo or label on it. I don't care to be the latest fashion victim/free advertising for someone else. I have a number of pieces of designer clothing (found at Goodwill or bought at consignment stores) hanging in my closet and they are FABULOUS fabric and quality - but no logo or label is visible.

I have sensitive skin and Gwen has eczema. What makes her react, I don't react to and vice versa. I am good with pretty much any free/clear detergent, but she reacted to all of them except Purex. Fortunately Purex is one of the cheaper brands of detergent out there. She doesn't react to Hy-Vee's generic version of Purex so if it is cheaper, we get that. The brand name and the generic are usually around the same price. DH refuses to use any dish soap but Dawn. I talked him into buying Gain since it was only 99 cents for a huge bottle, so far no complaints. I am extremely picky about my feminine products. I only use Kotex or Playtex. Make-up I can be pretty picky about. I can get away with just about any brand of eyeshadow/lipstick/mascara but when it comes to foundation/blush I am really picky. It has to be something that doesn't cause me to break out in a rash. Right now I am using a Target brand mineral make-up that I really like. It's way cheaper than Bare Minerals. I react to Bare Minerals, which they say you aren't supposed to.

I would still try and get the best price possible and stock up when I could at a great price. But if there was only one or two brands someone was not allergice to then I would have no problem buying those brands. It is nice though to be able to just buy any product because we have no allergies.

Drama, as far as dish detergent Dawn does work much better on grease. I think your DH is completely right on that one. I do buy it when it is on sale, but will also buy others if they are super cheap. I just try and use the other brands for things that aren't greasey and save the Dawn for greasy stuff and DH when he gets car stuff like oil etc on himself. Dawn does put out some good coupons and sales though so I can almost always get it pretty cheap. I just wish they would stop shrinking the stupid bottles already! Pretty soon it will be either trial sizes or gallon jugs.

That's been my complaint about Dawn, it's price is going up but the bottles keep shrinking! A giant bottle of Gain was 99 cents. Suck it up buttercup.
