The thread on police and airsoft guns got me thinking.
Who here owns a gun? If you own a gun, what type(s) and what do you own them for?
If you don't, why don't you own a gun?

I don't own any firearms. I never cared to. I don't hunt and have never felt I needed a gun for self defense. I've always lived in safe areas and never felt my personal safety threatened. Never really felt compelled to do target shooting either.
I've never even held a gun before. Part of the reason I don't own any is likely due to the fact my parents never owned any. I never grew up around guns.

I do not personally own one. Have been thinking of getting a small gun in the household that I will learn to shoot. The kids have 22s ... they are just learning to shoot. The kids have wii, nerf and air soft guns. We keep paintball guns at the cabin. Paintball and 22s are used under supervision. Air soft they use on the property while i'm inside and with rules.
Husband has hunting guns... i honestly don't know what all he has? I grew up with hunting guns in the corner of the kitchen, not even in a gun cabinet, but not loaded.

I didn't grow up around guns & they do make me somewhat uncomfortable. BIL had a gun & it was here when he lived with me, but that didn't really bother me then. It wasn't until ex started becoming irrational & angry that guns bothered me because I think of what could happen with a gun in the hands of someone like that. Reminds me of the Eminem lyrics:
"the smartest shit I did was take them bullets out of that gun. Cuz id'a killed 'em, shit I would have shot Kim and him both"
Now as a parent it would bother me to have a gun with small children in the house. You can lock them up, but then what's the point? And even then they are a risk.

I don't own one because it's never struck me that I would need one. DH has owned many guns in the past because he used to hunt. Currently he doesn't own any or at least does not have any in our house. I think he might still have a few down at his parents' house.
We've thought about purchasing one because I'd like to learn how to shoot, but we can borrow one of his dad's guns for that.

We have some and it's all my fault. DH and I have been married for 22 years and after a while it's hard to come up with good gift ideas. This last Christmas, I thought I'd come up with a really unique one. Several times over the years he has mentioned that when he was growing up, all the boys in England had to do some military training and he was a good enough shot that he was a Queen's Marksman. No idea what that means, but he seemed to be proud when he said it and I thought maybe he'd like to try target shooting again. So for Christmas I bought him a single nice Ruger 22 with a scope and a safe large enough for our whole family to fit into. The dang safe cost more than my first 2 cars put together, but I was nervous about the gun and wanted to make sure we had a good place to keep it, plus wanted to put business papers and jewelry in it. DH was suitably surprised and it turns out he really liked the gun and has started going to shooting competitions and getting really into it. He has also started taking our oldest son, which I have mixed feelings about. But I trust DH and DS and am being supportive. That being said, a few weeks ago, I went to get a ring out of the safe and discovered that the entire safe was packed to the gills with weaponry. When I asked DH, he raised one eyebrow and made a funny comment about preparing for the zombie apocalypse. Oh, we're prepared all right.

I have a 380 and a 9mm. I have the 380 because my ex left it years ago when we broke up. I bought the 9mm and learned how to use it and shoot it accurately because of some threats.

I don't own a gun and don't particularly like them. DH has two - a Mossberg shotgun (pretty small caliber - 0.22?) and a Mozen Nagant sniper rifle. He probably has the least number of firearms of anyone in his family... "gun nuts" would be a mild description.
I could use the shotgun if I had to, but the rifle shoots bullets as long as my finger and would probably break my collarbone if I tried to fire it.
However, it was somewhat reassuring when our dog started barking at 2am the other day... DH opened the window and made the "click-click" sound, and whoever was there took off pretty quickly. He always keeps them unloaded, I don't even think he has ammo for the shotgun.

We do not own guns. We don't really have strong feelings either way, although I do have very strong feelings about guns and gun safes being a matched set. I don't shoot guns for fun often. I don't hunt (too much like camping.) I don't go to the shooting range. So, I don't really have a purpose to own a gun. There are a lot of things I don't own, just because I would never use it (like a tent.) So, it isn't some big political statement or anything, just happenstance.
Plus, I always figured if someone broke into my house while I was laying on the couch, the chances that I would have the clarity to be able to get to it, and use it properly without shooting myself is pretty low. Some people are just more calm and coordinated than others. I have accepted who I am. There are downfalls. So, I will just have to count on my continued good luck of no one breaking into my house while I'm home.

Until last year, I thought I was afraid of guns. Then I realized I didn't have a problem with guns, I have a problem with careless people with guns.

We've probably got 10. I couldn't tell you everything we own. 9mm, a shotgun pistol, some other pistol, another shotgun, probably another, my Weatherby rifle, another couple of rifles, probably another pistol....
The rifles, shotguns, shotgun pistol, and one pistol are all for hunting: deer/turkey/rabbit/protection from coyotes during rabbit season. One pistol for protection.
I use the Weatherby during deer season, and that is about it.

No guns. We're not exactly anti gun, but neither dh or I have any interest in them, certainly not with kids. DH's parents always try to make us take a gun when we go backpacking (and even camping). I don't think they're ever going to get the hint.
My in-laws have guns obviously and I have a lot of anxiety about ds being over there without dh or I. The in-laws are certain that he couldn't ever get to them, but I know they keep them loaded, and ds is more of an accessory to their day instead of the focus of it when he is there so I think its possible he could slip away unnoticed long enough to get into trouble.
We haven't figured out a way to deal with it though. Which reminds me, that I need to have a serious sit down with sil about guns in her house as well since she wants to babysit ds at her house as well.

I don't hunt any more. I don't shoot skeet, trap or target shoot. I lock the doors to minimize the risk of a home invasion. Guns are expensive. One of the primary sources of guns used in crimes is home burglaries. And guns found during a home invasion are sometimes used against the occupants. So why would I want a gun?

I don't own a gun. I don't have strong feeling either way. My parents owned a hand gun when I was growing up which was locked in a safe. I am not so sure how useful it would have been in an emergency seeing as how you would have to go unlock a safe to get to it. I remember once when I was about 13 yrs old something fell over in the basement in the middle of the night waking us all up. The next thing I heard was my mom yelling "kids don't come out of your rooms. Your dad is walking around naked with a gun in his hand." It was then that I learned my dad apparently sleeps naked which is not something that a 13 yr old really wanted to know

Even though I don't own any guns or care to own guns doesn't mean I'm anti gun. As far as I see it if responsible people want guns they should be able to have them. I think most gun laws are pointless, if you're really determined to commit a crime with a gun, you can bypass all the laws and get a gun on black market or from a corrupt gun dealer quite easily.
The problem with gun laws is criminals aren't going to get guns no matter what laws you pass, the gun laws only really affect law biding citizens.

Got it already. You take a day long class, get. Certificate, get fingerprinted and background check.Pay 112 bucks and wait. One of the reasons was that I could carry the gun in one piece when I went to shoot. Otherwise you have to have the gun locked and the ammo somewhere else entirely. Pita.

Maybe including having the kid shoot a raw chicken with a small gauge shotgun. Seeing how blown apart the chicken gets is a good object lesson. (I still remember handling still warm game being one of the most disturbing parts of learning to hunt.) Sure gave me a healthy respect for guns.

I can't see how having a gun would make me any safer in my home unless I kept it loaded on the night stand which isn't an option with kids. I also have no desire to go to a range and shoot targets for fun. I don't understand the point of semi-automatics, but I know that there are law abiding citizens who just think its fun to own and shoot them.

I'm sure I still have some toy guns from a costume a few years back. We don't even watch tv shows that have guns in them though...

I'd trust my in-laws with Gwen around guns. After all my FIL is the one that taught my DH how to shoot.
That being said I wouldn't really want them teaching her how to use guns without talking to us first and I'd prefer that DH be there (I know nothing about guns).
FIL has a gun collection and he doesn't keep the case locked. We've discussed that with him. The study itself has a lock on the door and none of the guns have ammo. DH would prefer that the case be locked but since Gwen isn't there every day he feels it is a bit much to demand it. Keeping the study locked when no one is around is enough.
