My husband isn't "huge" like football player big. I think he's pretty average size. 5' 10" and about 210 lbs. He's not fat, maybe "athletic" build?
Anyway, when I buy him Large shirts, he says they're too tight, so I'll buy i'm XL.
But he's not really an Extra Large guy? What kind of shirts do really large guys wear - like over 6'2"??

If you find out, please let me know! DH is 6'4" and has a long torso so most XL shirts end up too short after a few washes. But XXLs look like tents on him. I used to order from the King Size catalogue (it's a big/tall place but you can specify big OR tall) but I hate paying $15 for one t-shirt... It could be worse, one of my friends' husbands is 6'6" and weighs about 130lbs. I have NO idea where he buys clothes. I think my friend has to tailor everything...

Just like women the sizes are more based on chest size not height. My XH was just under 6 foot and wore Mediums when we were married. He was probably around 160lbs. then. I dated another guy 5'11" 1/2" who preferred XXL but did wear some of my XL vendor shirts. He weighed roughly what your hubby does. Given how IT vendors shop, my guess is they assume XL is either the normal guy size or fits most. (They definitely do not order for women. )

DH is 6' 0" and around 220. XXL for him. But he likes them a bit loose and heaven forbid if it's tight in the neck.

::What kind of shirts do really large guys wear - like over 6'2"??::
You buy (insert size) Tall. T-shirts are harder. Work/casual shirts aren't too bad. If I'm not getting "tall" shirts I have to get like XXXL as I'm 6'6" with broad shoulders, that means XXXL's look like tents, but they're barely long enough to not look like crop tops. Otherwise I can get XL talls. They fit right but are also long enough to look like normal shirts. Some t-shirts come in "tall", but most I've found are just one solid color with no writing/design on them.
::But he's not really an Extra Large guy? ::
No offense, but from your description yeah, he sounds like he needs the XL. 5'10" 210 is fairly large, even if "large" doesn't necessarily mean "fat" in this instance.

I am 5'10" and weigh around 200 pounds, very little of it is fat, a fairly strong build and I have been wearing XL since high school. Large t's just don't cover, I agree that the t-shirts aren't geared towards height, mainly girth across the chest.

The problem is men's sizes are "value" sizes (small/medium/large/XL) which makes you imagine a build relative to whatever you believe "average" to be. Women's sizes are numeric (4/6/8/etc) so there isn't an image that comes to mind if you buy a size 6 (or whatever). If men's sizes were numeric like women's, you wouldn't have this question.

My son (18 year old) is 6'4" 215 lb. He has a long body. He is in denial that he needs XL shirts. The L size fit him pretty tight (I guess he is trying to show off his muscles) and barely come down to the top of his pants. He had to wear uniforms (golf shirts) for school last year and he could not keep his shirts tucked in (dress code violation, but I think the teachers understood he couldn't find a long enough uniform shirt). One time we looked at the Tall sizes, and they were REALLY long (that is a ghetto look here), so we didn't get them. My other son (20 year old) is 6'2 and maybe 150 He actually bought some size small shirts, but I think the mediums look better on him.

When you are extra tall, you have to go custom or catalogue. Available sizes are Tall, Extra Tall and Big. Extra Tall has a few more inches on length. I am XXLXT Usually fits good. In a dress shirt, 18 1/2 and 37 or 38 length does it. JCPenney catalogue usually has Tall and Extra Tall sizes and will sometimes have the smaller chest sizes. Everybody carries big.

The numeric sizing wouldn't fix anything as with women's clothing each individual clothing manufacturer can randomly assign the numeric value to different sized clothing, I mean honestly how can someone be smaller than a size 0? Just go with a standard numeric such as what you get with men's pants (waist/inseam) but with the equivalent for shirts.

Dang, he must look like a WWII refugee.
When I was 190, people thought I was too thin.

I get small, medium, or large, and have had all sorts of varied experiences. I hate how variable manufacturing is. I have two shirts from the SAME manufacturer but one medium is tighter than the other medium.
Dress shirts are a big beef for me right now. I loathe all this "Slim fit" and "city fit" crap. I want it to be 100% cotton, have a pocket, and be reasonably priced. Most of the time I may have two out of three of those criteria.

Really? I love those things. My options in standard dress shirts are ones that are too tight at the neck, like I literally can't button the top button at all tight, in order to sorta fit around the waist. Or I get shirts that fit in the neck and shoulders, but they're the size of a tent compared to my waist. Apparently I missed the memo that every guy is supposed to have a beer gut the size of a keg.

You can take your shirts to a tailor and have them custom fit.

Yeah, that's what I do for DH, buy the "slim fit" stuff. He's tall and I guess thinner than most of the population because if I buy a shirt that's long enough, it will invariably be big enough around to wrap him twice. Another poster mentioned the Tommy Bahama shirts. I love the prints and they look great on DH, but maybe because we live in a tourist area, the ones they carry here are for really portly gentleman and look like tents on DH. Those have to go to the tailor.

That's pretty much been my experience with dress shirts. Eiether I end up choking and too short in the sleeves, but fit around my midsection, or they fit in my neck and arms but it's like a tent around my middle. It's a big reason I don't dress up more.
Plus I hate hate HATE waering a tie. Seriously, I only wear it as long as I absolutely have to and then rip it off like it's an anaconda wrapped around my neck.

Once you get into a Big and Tall catalogue (Not JCP), the Tall goes away and they only have Xtra Tall and Big. Yes, even the underwear is longer. Yes, the pants have an extra long rise (crotch space), so you won't take as long an inseam. Two such places are Kings Size (kingsdirect.com) and Casual Male (casualmale.com), which is affiliated with a host of overgrown sites.

Husband is 6'2" and 230 lbs and I enjoy how he looks in a size L shirt. Not too tight- they fit well ...he looks good in XL also. I prefer him in Large. Because a little objectification is good for the relationship.

My husband is 6'2 and weighs about 140 or less. He has been really sick, but he never weighed more than 165. He does look like a walking skeleton.

If they are only 6'2" tall, the Big and Tall catalogues are not for them. The talls are geared to 6'3" and over.

My other son (20 year old) is 6'2 and maybe 150. DH was like that when he was younger. He's filled out a little since then! When he needed business shirts he used to go to the Custom Shop, which now operates only on-line and in regular visits to major cities where they measure you and take orders. I've done that and still have one from the 1980s (the polyester blend lasts forever although they had many 100% cotton swatches). The price gets more reasonable if you order 4 or 5 at a time. I also like the idea of getting shirts that are too big and having a tailor cut them down- but talk to the tailor first about what it will cost.

I get DFs shirts made now because of his funny body shape. But I'd like to look into that Custom Shop because I bet it's a LOT less than what I'm paying now.
