constanz - good luck finding a good place for your puppies. we always had a family friend and later, my brother, stay at the house with our dog when I was growing up. I'm not sure what we'd do now...

constanz- Check with your local scouts to see if any of them are working on a pet related badge. I know a young lady who for a scout project- she wants to be a vet- did pet sitting and dog walking (with her parents' permission of course) and volunteered at the Humane Society

I am at 6 NSDsI have a little work rant - feel free to skip - I am getting sick of getting calls from telemarketers about our copy machine toner, for example the price is going up so you better get it while its hot, etc. Then they don't even know what kind of copier we have! They try to sell toner for a copier we haven't had for a couple of years! Dead giveaway there lady! We don't have caller ID here yet. Kind of in the stone ages, though we are a smallish company. End Rant So I have been slowly chipping away at my credit card debt, little amounts at a time. I'm not sure if I am going about this the correct way, but I'm sure you guys could give me some insight. I am trying to pay off this one card that is currently 0% but is scheduled to not be by the end of June. It will go up to 24% Eek!So that has been my focus. My other two are at 13% and 8%. It feels like it will be a VERY long process and I'm trying hard to remain positive about it. I got myself into this mess (or my lack of spine did) so its up to me to dig my way out. Hope everyone is doing well. Honey - Hope your situation with the Board works out for you Discover more has a no fee no interest for 12 months card, maybe try that. Also call the 13% card and say, you know I noticed that you are my highest rate card can you do anything about that? They will either ask what the next lowest is or ask why you care. If they ask just say, I don't like paying such a high rate, is there something you can do? Call every 6 months.

constanzz: I admit we're spoiled. We have friends' dogs here all the time, but when we go on vacation, we have a couple of friends who came and stay in our house with the dogs. They are completely spoiled. When I was a kid, we did used to just leave the dogs and have a neighbor come over to let them out/feed them, and all the neighbors did the same. Though along the same lines as mizbear you could also check with a local 4H club. The kids are often doing animal related projects and could be a pretty good bet for pet sitting

Constanz: We are having the same concern. We used to have DH's sis come stay at our place, but now she has a dog we aren't sure that her alpha female and ours will get along well. If not it is asking his parents to stop by a couple times a day. I don't like that either, because that means they are kennelled 22 hours a day. I've asked DH to see if any teachers in his school are broke enough to be willing to stay at our place for week, heck they could still do something else full time, just be at our place when they aren't working so the dogs can be out. I may look into a pet sitter, but I'm guessing it would be cost prohibitive.

okay, new york peoples.... a question
I have a 10am flight on a Wednesday out of JFK. I'm planning to stay in New Jersey and do the public transit thing but my question is would it be smart(er) to get a hotel close to the airport with a shuttle?
I don't want to bother my hosts to drop me off at 8am so I can check in but I also fear the "what could go wrong" when it comes to a heavily trafficked area and making a flight.
The room I found isn't too bad, $60 with a free breakfast, wireless and airport shuttle. Is there a better alternative I'm not thinking of right now?

UGH!!! I tried to post last night and my network went down as I posted. I tried to post a few minutes ago and my network went down then too!
Anyway, I sold my diapers I had for sale and made $25. Woohoo. DS is experience pretty bad seperation anxiety. UGH. Fun stuff.
Constanz - We prefer having someone stay with the animals at our house. BIL has done it in the past. My next door neighbor's teenage son would come and let them out for a while until he got big enough that Muttley started distrusting him (Muttley doesn't like full grown males that he does not know). You might look at just a house/pet sitter so that your babies don't have to leave their comfort zone.

Startsmart- Not in New York, but I'd go for the hotel by the airport with shuttle at least for the night before departure. I used to travel for my job and I hated being at the mercy of traffic, which I think would be especially true at that time of day.

startsmart- I agree with dakota- my uncle has to travel for work and he goes to these neat Marriot? places near his airports that have kitchen facilities in the rooms. They are clean, safe and close by. Also if you have AAA or AARP or something, they may be able to give you a discount.

thanks for the feedback ladies, I really don't want to fall into cheap/stupid territory but also not let the worry of traffic mean wasting money.
Total expenses for 13 nights in DC/NY so far is $100.... yeah. I can afford to spend a little more for this peace of mind!
The best news is that a few days after I get to DC I get paid for my new freelance client so there will be a nice cash inflow! Biggest expense is going to be public transit & coffee. Probably in equal proportions.

Constanz: When my little guy was still around, I would ask the front desk people at my vet's office. Usually, one of them would stay with him or take him home. He was always well cared for and loved. I recommend contacting your vet and see if they have any ideas. I usually paid about $10 a day and a little gift from my trip. If I was close, I would gladly take your babies for you!

Smart
You should ABSOLUTELY stay near JFK the night before your flight.
In the future, if you'd rather stay in NJ, you need to fly in / out of Newark rather than JFK or LaGuardia. Former NYer here LOL. The only time my ex messed up and booked us flights to Newark (considered a NY airport but technically in NJ) instead of JFK it took us FOUR HOURS to get to my sister's house (15 min from JFK). I'm sure that would not happen every day but two hours is typical. It's worth your peace of mind.
Sorry to "barge in"!

NY airports - my stepsister once had a connection through NYC and didn't realize until she landed that she was flying into JFK and out of LaGuardi. Not as bad as Neward, but defintely undue stress. She made it, but just barely!

Okay, I'll have to book the hotel next week! I'm hoping to keep the luggage situation light so I don't need to worry about schlepping things around the city.
When I go out of town my parents watch the dogs and I do the same when they go on vacation.

Evening ladies. Today is a NS day as I've been lounging around all day. We had such beautiful weather yesterday, I wore myself out.

Update: 14 NS days & 4 CS days = 18 NS/CS days
Today was another CS day. I have been getting a few of those but everything was expected and money saved for them. I have been trying to get a lot of things done around the house and managed to get most of them done. I do know that tomorrow will be a spend day.
I have been catching up with reading all I missed but forgot to take notes or make contacts.

Such a productive day! Got online with minion #1 at 9:30am and managed to get a really solid plan in place for client #1. Then sbcaligirl and her DD arrived to look at baby clothes before we went shopping. Aside from the HORRIBLY RUDE clerk who identified me as the "woman with the 18 YEAR OLD" it was a good shopping trip. Seriously, I don't look like I'm in my 30s or 40s, sbcaligirl agrees. Home to clean up some emails and start working around the house. Made an omelet. Got online with minion #2 at 3pm to go over work for client #2 and that was extremely productive. Then, resisting my email inbox, I started cleaning Rearranged furniture in my bedroom, vacuumed, started to put up my new photo project. Another break then I started in the office. Cleaned up the closet storage, filed, put away boxes, vacuumed and tried to set up my dual monitors. Failed at setting up my dual monitors. Now I'm searching the internet for clues and looking at the inbox with disdain. Over 40 emails still to process and there's no way to know if each one is a 30 second response or a 30 minute trip chasing rabbit trails! Oy. Either way, a really good Saturday so far and I'm looking forward to tomorrow when I take my grandpa some pictures and cookies and then go for a drive

I bow to smartstart. I am starting to feel better, but still really tired. Now I am playing catch up. Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with a deadbeat brother with an attitude problem- my mother said punching him in the mouth is not an option, nor is duct tape.

Mizbear- I mostly ignore my brother. He's not a deadbeat anymore but went through about 7 years of mooching off my parents or girlfriend of the month. We just don't communicate much ever and its better that way. It really doesn't help to ignore my inbox but I'll get through it this afternoon. Right now I need a haircut (always plan those before trips for some reason) and then go for a drive. Seriously the most relaxing part of my week! I'm also helping blue's brother with a resume this weekend so a little review there before the week goes crazy

I'm back! Vacation was amazingly relaxing - just what I really needed to get my head on straight, calm down, focus on me and decide on next steps.
Good news: I got a bonus, we stayed on budget for the *WHOLE* trip - so all CS days, exercised every day AND walked 10,000+ steps each day except driving days.
Bad news: didn't make the short list for a job I wanted at the World Bank - disappointed but not crushed
February is on a good track - and I'll be gearing up for major networking/job searching - once I get through the 10 loads of laundry in front of me.
More in next post.

Constanz – doesn’t sound like an option – but when we travel we hire a petsitter to come and stay with our 2 girls – they are from the dog walking company we use. The other option we have considered (but have not done in a while) is have the adult “kids” (18-23) of friends come and stay for the overnight (pay them less than the petsitter) – but keep the mid-day walker to check on everything. Maybe a co-worker/friend you trust that in a roommate situation would like to stay there (a place to themselves and earn a little cash). We don’t crate and wouldn’t be comfortable leaving our dog alone so long – not worried about destruction – she would get depressed. Also, vet techs at your vets office. For cost purposes (in case anyone cares/wants a ballpark) – we spend in metro DC $80/day for the overnight for the 2 girls (this is a line item in each travel budget).
Startsmart – book the hotel – worth it at 2x the price!
Mizbear – you ok?
Honey – are you ok? Is it just one month in HOA dues/maintenance fees? Anything in the by-laws that you could use to ask for a payment plan – since it was partially their fault? Also, do the by-laws say anything about how you have to be current with your HOA dues/fees to be on the board? I was on the condo board when I owned a place – they are crazy things. My *advice* (free and late – so maybe meaningless) – don’t respond to the letter until you know 2 things: (1) the rules and (2) whether you WANT to stay on the board – is it a real value add to you? Engaging in an exchange with some people just frustrates you and doesn’t impact them at all.

Meet ups!
DC: There was talk of a meet up when startsmart was in town? Still on?
VA/DC/MD/PA/Other: still interested in this? from the response i received it sounded like something in Southern PA/Northern MD might work. Are people thinking meet for lunch/afternoon or maybe an overnight somewhere not expensive?
Black Hills – I have got to get busy on this – but one thing. I heard a snippet on a news station and googled the story – about a legislator in South Dakota wants to change the definition of murder so if you kill an abortion provider to prevent an abortion - it isn’t murder – but justifiable homicide. I have to say – if that goes into law – I’m going to pass on the meet up – I don’t want to start an argument here – but I can’t spend my money in a place like that.

spruby- I am at a crossroads right now. My brother asked to use my computer this morning, early and went snooping through my message and personal accounts. Luckily, my DM and DGM know that I talk to people on the internet- but he blew up and made it sound horrible. Plus, I posted a thread asking for help planning for when I go back to work in a few months when I get done school and I feel like some people are judging me for having a hot chocolate or buying a new car or wanting to buy a house- without getting all the facts first. I don't know that I belong here.

mizbear - always remember - no one knows your whole story except you - so wrap yourself in some emotional teflon and read all comments people make. Some will be helpful, some will be hateful, some will be painfully accurate. Keep the first, let the second slide of you (no stick teflon!) and place the 3rd aside to look at later. Sometimes the messages we need to hear aren't delivered in a way we can be immediately receptive too - but if you can separate the content from the delivery - you might find it useful. It won't be easy - and you'll want to let them sit a little before you even try. Most comments generally fall in bucket 1 or 2 - but allow for the possibility of bucket 3.
And tell your brother to mind his own business! If that is the thanks you get for letting him use your things - he isn't welcome to use them in the future!
Stick around at least this thread - we are a friendlier bunch!
