Yes, those of us who are educated in the field of medicine know better, tloonya. You, obviously, do not. We recently had a family member experience some of the symptoms of a stroke, while at work. Not really sure what to make of them, his secretary called 911, this after having him stick out his tongue and noting that it went to one side and not straight out. Not everyone is educated in the god all mighty field of medicine, yet some can still come up with answers. The secretary did the right thing. Sticking out the tongue isn't the best test, but it's better than nothing. The family member got quick evaluation and treatment, if needed. That's what's critical. It may be just a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) and not a full-blown stroke; however, a TIA is a warning sign. It may not leave any permanent damage itself (rarely does), but it lets the individual know they have an increased risk of stroke. Glad your family member got the right intervention, lonewolf!

The thing about a TIA is you might not find out if the T part is true until it is too late. There are amazing treatments available, but time is critical.

Darn right time is critical, Coleenz. If people spend their time sitting around poking holes in the victim, things aren't looking good for said victim.

For the record, the reason you should never give aspirin to a stroke victim is two-fold: Giving aspirin will interfere with platelet aggregation. That's going to result in more bleeding if the stroke is hemmoragic. Also, if the stroke is ischemic and has negatively impacted the individual's ability to swallow (which is very common), the victim may aspirate the medication. Now, you've got aspirin in the lungs, which isn't the best place for it, I'm afraid. For the same reason, you never try to give any oral medication, or anything by mouth, to an unconcious patient.

And while we are on the subjects of mouths, if you see someone having a seizure DO NOT try to put anything in their mouth. They will not bite their tongue off, but you might lose a finger. Just move things away from them that might hurt them and call 911.

Darn it, Loony, they use leeches now- far more efficient. Don't you keep up with the latest developments in medical science?

Understood.
I responded because your original criticism targeted "proper manner for handling possible stroke, or heart attack, or any emergency situation".
Correct.
But ground up snow leopard bone has remarkable curative properties. Use as a cure for high blood pressure, low blood pressure, muscle pains, impotence, numb extremities, frostbite, eye twitches, dry mouth, runny nose, diarrhea, nausea, rash, inflammation, shortness of breath, baldness, shin splints, chipped teeth, and body odor.
Ah.

*chuckle* I'll admit, this thread did get my adrenaline pumping. There's nothing that bothers me so much as to see dangerous medical interventions promoted by well-meaning but ignorant people. I teach in the community (or, did until I retired to care for mother), and am often surprised at some of the things we find people believe because they read it on the internet, or saw it on television. It's often very difficult to unseat these mistaken, and often harmful ideas. I've run into people in the hospital who actually believed the patients shown on the television program ER were really injured, ill, or dying. They couldn't accept that it was an actor playing a part, so they believed magic could be done. Their dead relative could be revived with a couple of shocks from the defibrillator and we were cruel for not reviving them just because they were "old". It's sad, and it's so hurtful for these folks. If you can manage to get through to them, their lives are the better for it. That's why I tend to react when I see something like this. I know the real harm it can do.

I had a pain in my little left toe. I 'Diagnosed By Google' and discovered a parasitic twin was causing the toe pain. Instead of severing the toe as recommended by Google sites, I decided just to clip the nail. It worked!

You modern medicine people think you know everything. I will let you know that I use leeches and blood letting often, and my family is totally healthy. It cured my son's broken arm - no cast needed. Quacks.

Time is of the essence when dealing with a stroke. They can be reversed completely (if you're lucky), using tools like the MERCI device. Running around, sticking needles in people seems like a dangerous practice, not to mention exceptionally irresponsible.

You mean ground up snow leopard bone would cure Toughtimes? Why? Was she impotent? Loony - How are you feeling? <<puts lighter to needle to sterilize>> When my mom had something weird going on my brother called 911 and then I called her to keep her calm until they got there. It sounded like a TIA and I remembered something I had read about asking the patient 3 questions: Can you raise your arms and keep them up? Can you smile? Can you repeat a simple sentence? While talking to her the EMTs showed up and asked me if I was a nurse because that's the questions you should ask. That's what was happening - she was having a TIA. But no blood letting was recommended.

It's part of the F.A.S.T. system recommended by the Heart and Stroke Foundation: For humans: FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? TIME: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately. For snow leopards: FLING: Fling the snow leopard off a cliff. Does the sound it make sound like "thump" or "thud"? Try several times to be sure. ACUPUNCTURE: Sterilize 20 needles (or if you don't know how, don't bother). Stick them in the snow leopard's bottom. Does it jump or make growling noises? SLAP: Slap the snow leopard repeatedly. This actually serves no diagnostic purpose, but it will help to reduce your stress levels. TEMPORIZE: If you do observe stroke symptoms in a snow leopard, wait three hours and administer the FAST diagnostic again. Then throw the leopard headfirst into a toilet (to keep it hydrated), leave for two weeks, administer FAST one last time, and then call a vet as soon as possible. Ask for the new stroke super-drug called "Euthanasia". Accept no substitutes. If the vet tries to waste time explaining the drug to you, insist that he get on with it. E-mail this list to ten more people and you will have good luck all week.
