since I'm now a supervisor, my boss wants me to visit one of our warehouses a couple of states away. She and two other colleagues will be there with me. It will be my first overnight trip alone - advice on how to deal with being away from DS for the first time? (I'm okay being away from DH - he can take care of himself, LOL)

How old is DS? I think you can tell him that mommy needs to go away on business and have him understand it is important to be away from your family because we all have to work. And, i think you could promise to call him right before bedtime to say good night and bring him back a small trinket.

Can't really give advice on being away from your kids. But I've traveled a lot for work, it's no big deal. you'll do fine.
Just plan ahead. Make sure you know the addresses of everywhere you're going (including the hotel and job site) and the names and ph one numbers of the people you're meeting there. Read up on your company's policy of travel, do you pay with a coorperate CC or get reimbursed? How do you book your trip? Stuff like that.

Oh well, it is mom who is going to be doing the missing! The baby will be fine. Just take a deep breath and know he's in good hands and go.

It's only one night and one full day, but I will get back late so I'll miss DS for two tuck-ins.

Don't feel guilty for enjoying the alone time. ;D
Honestly, it won't be as hard as you think it will.

Yes- enjoy it! DS' sitter told me that at that age they have no concept of time. My Ex was lazy and also a little terrified of being responsible for DS when he was little because he'd never been around babies. I had to go to Brussels for a week (hey it's, a dirty job but someone's gotta do it) when DS was 18 months old. The babysitter just kept him at her place the whole time. I dropped him off on a Friday, went to work, flew to Brussels that evening, and a week later I landed on a Friday afternoon and picked him up. He was clearly happy to see me but didn't seem particularly affected by my absence. We went on to the grocery store.
So, get done what you need to do and enjoy the "me" time. I always did.

One thing I like about business travel is cable TV. Since I'm a good YMer and don't have it, it's nice to have it on business travel

Get receipts for everything especially for your meals.
The highest ranking person in the travel group pays for any group meals.
If you drink, drink lightly and not in excess.
Pack light.

DS was a little older when dh took a couple of overnight trips away. DS really liked having short videos of daddy to watch on my phone.

I always tried to pick up something from the places I visited on business trips. I'd bring them back for the kids, so they always knew there'd be something for them that was connected to the city/town/country I'd been to. They enjoyed the gifts.

Good luck. No hints but stay busy. First time we left ODD she was 1 and 1/2. I didn't do so well, and this was a weekend vacation for DH and I. Ended up with an almost 200 dollar phone bill at the hotel since signal service sucked.... SO my advice make sure you don't call to check using the hotel phone.

One of my rules for business travel is to never fly into a strange city at night, if you can avoid it. It is much easier to get your bearings if you arrive at daylight.

Will DS have a sleepover at MIL's or will DH handle overnight duty? Oh, and first trip? Skip the alcohol all-together until you're a veteran and know the drill better. Ask for a low-floor room, bring a flashlight JIC power goes out, and bring some comfy clothes to hang out in. I always appreciated having something more than just work suits and pjs with me. Have some fun--maybe try and eat at a local favorite. Oh, and bring a book or some mags in case you have some down time at the airport. (I actually enjoyed travelling for businesss.)

golenrulegirl has a good point. Bring things to entertain you at the airport and at the hotel. I'm not sure about the advice on not drinking. It's not rocket science, just don't order more than one alchololic beverage at dinner with your co workers and you'll be fine. The most senior person paying for a group meal hasn't been true in my experience, but I'm a govie so our business travel is different. We get "per diem" that we get reimbursed after the trip. It's around $60 a day and varies depending on where you're going. If you're going to be doing a lot of business travel, sign up for airline and hotel rewards. And yes, keep your receipts, ALL of them. That way they'll know you're not spending company money on booze and hookers .

I used to take my own pillow until I met up with a Comfort Suites pillow. It was such a great pillow that I bought one for my very own self! How to deal with being gone from DS? Don't have that answer because I didn't ever have to travel for work until my kids were older teens. You'll miss two tuck-ins, but when you get home after just one night, you can still go in his room and watch him sleep

It'll be good practice for when you leave him to go on vacation.

For one night, he should be just fine. Hope you are able to just relax and enjoy not having any family responsibility for the night!

If you're going to be doing a lot of business travel, sign up for airline and hotel rewards. Good advice- I did this very early even though I didn't travel that much but the points slowly added up. I still remember my first freebie- I took DS, then 12, to Bermuda with me when I had to attend a conference! Many of these programs let you redeem smaller amounts of points/miles + cash for rewards so you don't need to wait till you accumulate a lot. Just remember that most airlines will delete your miles after 18 months of inactivity. They'll e-mail you a few months before it's about to happen. Redeeming a few miles for a magazine subscription or making a small purchase through tgheir shopping portal will start the clock ticking again.

What can I say. At work dinner for ten one time, my manager had too much to drink. She 'outed' three of her employees (including herself) to the rest of the employees at the table who had no idea any of them were gay. Nor did she have the permission of the other two gay employees at the table to 'out' them.
A bad night was had by all.

I can't imagine why anyone would care if someone is gay, unless you are currently sleeping with that person.
A friend of mine in law school outed herself to us after a night of drinking. We already assumed she was so its not like the revelation was a big shocker.
