I'll probably just keep going to work, paying my bills, and buying stuff. Maybe keep my eye out for some nice investment property if prices really dip. That's about it.

Probably Wellbutrin, but I've heard good things about Zoloft too.

Because that's what people do in a depression, live the same life, because depressions don't people or jobs or money or stuff like that. I hope the next downturn has 95% unemployment and it's rolling unemployment so everyone gets a taste. Really? You really hope for 95% unemployment or the end of civilization as we know it. You must be incredibly strong physically and mentally to want to compete for resources in such dire circumstances.

Maybe not most people, but that's what defense contractors do. The Republicans are talking about how we need to cut the deficit and federal spending, but even they want to increase the defense budget.
That's a horrible thing to hope for.
ETA - Kind of illogical too. I figure society would completely break down and we'd have martial law or anarchy way before unemployment got anywhere near that high. Probably something like 33% would do it. Almost certainly by 50%.

Normally I'd say yes, but we're talking happy pills here. I might be willing to trade them for good vino though.

I agree completely, that's also horrible. It probably would be prudent for folks in a dying industry to start acquiring other skills though. Be prepared, and all that.

If they'd stop voting for politicians that want to send all jobs to Sri Lanka that would be a start. If they'd stop buying anything from companies that make their products in Sri Lanka that would be even better.
I'm using Sri Lanka as a stand in for the entire outsourcing thing by the way. I just like the way Sri Lanka sounds and looks.

Silly me, I didn't even know you COULD put your mortgage on a credit card. Is your mortgage really small, or do you just have a ginormous limit on your Visa?

The coming depression, I am going to have a fence all around my property. I am going to raise a big garden. I am going to have ducks and chickens and a pond, if my land will hold water. I might get a goat. I am going to get a deer feeder and brush hog a place for it that I can see from my upstairs window. I am going to put my mortgage onto my credit card, it is .7% lower interest rate. I am going to have berms that help retain water for my garden. I am going to cut my own firewood for heat.mmi am going to catch more rainwater. I will have food, not all I need but more as a percentage. I will have water. I will have a paid for shelter, but a credit card bill. I will have heat. I have septic so no sewage bill. What will you do in the depression?Come to your house and steal your stuff- DUH!

Cretinous is pulling your leg. Dictionary.com defines the word as someone who is stupid or obtuse. I am leaving out "mentally defective" because that is probably a protected class by law.
Put him on ignore or expect more of the same. Your choice.

That's called a TROPICAL depression. Who knew that feeding the wild life and living on a pond would save me during a depression! Fence is already installed. Woot! And I have wine!! <<sits and waits for depression>>

It doesn't really matter what the public thinks. This train will keep chugging along until bond borrowers demand a higher yield before they buy our bonds. As long as they're willing to buy the train keeps rolling. The public can think we're exactly 1.57324 nanoseconds away from the universe ripping apart and being invaded by 26th dimensional beings from a nearby bubble universe. John Q. Public stopped mattering a long time ago. It's all about multinational conglomerates, huge banks, quasi governmental institutions, etc., now.

My answer to bloated govt and lying big media is to make them as irrelevant as possible. The post at the start of this thread is what am I doing, making govt and the big economy as irrelevant as possible. I don't want to be getting a check from the man and looking for real-estate that most others can't afford to buy they they are losing their houses and income. I think I just heard them become irrelevant. Keep up the good work! If that is what you think will happen your depression will never go away. And if you are un or under employed - I am sorry to hear that. I do think it's regional and it depends on what your field is. You may need to train for something different or create your own company. The people that survive and do the best are the ones that are able to change with the times. I'm not one of those people. I dislike change and technology. Thank God DH is one of those people. I'm the woman behind her successful man though so I get some credit. This is my secret: Head locks were no longer effective.

Hard to say. I think we've probably got another couple decades though. It all depends on what the private sector does. All it takes is one guy in a garage, or lab, or whatever, to come up with the next big idea that changes everything for a while. We could see a huge bull market and tons of prosperity while the underlying financial problems in this country don't improve at all. We've been wracking up debt for decades, and every economist that's looked at SS and Medicare since 1980 has said they'll both go broke under the Boomers retirement. We still had the digital revolution and plenty of boom years in there.
Do I think we can continue to wrack up debt at the rate we've been going forever. Obviously not. Sooner or later we'll have to either start paying it off, or at the very least stop accruing it and wait for inflation to make the existing debt really cheap to pay off later. I don't necessarily think we're all that close to that point yet.

If you look at the worst 3rd world countries, bands of armed thugs hold the power. If the economy gets too bad and society breaks down, your garden and chickens will make a fine meal for others. Relationship building at your local gun range will be more valuable.

The more scarce resources are, the more difficult it will be to obtain them.

I think I'll become a hobo and do menial labor for homesteaders with guns, while trying to avoid the roving militias who might "recruit" me to their work gangs in the mines. Then I'll join forces with the Postman and stage a revolution and start a new society from the ashes.

Sarah, first I would like to apologize to you and vandals. I should not drink and post, it will not happen again. Weltz ------------ You should smoke and post instead, for a kinder, gentler Jarhead! Im just going to wait until he curls up in the fecal position then steal all his stuff. Fecal position? Curled up like a turd in the toilet bowl? Awesome. If we're reduced to living on what we can grow I'm totally screwed. I planted a veggie garden this year and everything I planted turned brown and died, then the weeds overpowered everything, grew six feet tall and started smack talking. I don't even go over to that part of the yard anymore, it's scary. I do have an awesome collection of birds coming into my birdfeeders, though, so I guess I will live off roasted warblers. And I'll see if you can eat weeds, if you boil them long enough. Until the zombies come, anyway.

"If you have it in you to try gardening one more time, I recommend square foot gardening. I've had so many problems over the years with my soil. This summer, after reading the book, I used "mel's mix" and everything grew beautifully. My tomato's are on the small side (I think because of the heat), but really everything is almost perfect. www.amazon.com/All-New-Square-Foo....+foot+gardening" Actually I'm going to give it one more shot next year. I figured the problem was the soil (even though I did amend it) so I bought two of those 3foot by 3 foot raised garden beds. We're grading the rest of our yard this fall, and when we do that I'll set out the new beds and just add GOOD soil. I will definitely try your suggested book. If this fails, I guess I can add sand and make them sand boxes for future grand kids..

Speaking of zombies, has anyone seen that promo from AMC? Supposedly, they had some of the Walking Dead roaming around in NYC (as a dig against Dish Network)....I'm guessing it was staged, but the responses from some of the people makes me wonder if it's not. I'm surprised no one got shot in the head. www.amctv.com/videos/could-zombies-live-among-us
