Well, they are going to lose federal funding for the women's health program (which pays 90%, or about 35 million dollars per year). Perry says the state will make up the difference, but my bet is that they shut the whole thing down.

Thank you Texas www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48746014/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/"Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office had argued before the appeals court that the state is entitled to exclude groups affiliated with abortion providers from its federally subsidized Women's Health Program. Abbott cheered the appeals court decision, noting that it "rightfully recognized that the taxpayer-funded Women's Health Program is not required to subsidize organizations that advocate for elective abortion." So morals win over legality in a court of law?

Uh yeah - all this from the state that has the highest execution rate in the country . The Great State of Texas can kiss women's backsides on this one. Because until y'all eliminate the death penalty, I'm calling you out on your anti-abortion/pro-life stance: hypocrites.

Texas can do what it wants to do. I'm all for states rights, period. They should be able to decide for themselves how they want to handle education, welfare, and everything else. But I also have the right to move to a state where their policies coincide with my beliefs. DF and I disagree about tax dollars paying for abortions. He thinks its wrong and I think it's better that paying out welfare or having children abused. That's okay that we disagree, doesn't make either of us wrong or bad people. If I lived in a state that I felt was bad for me as a woman or as a family, I would move to a more friendly state. Just like if I had a kid with special needs, I'd look to NY and NJ because of their liberal aid for these children.

Not to mention the hypocrisy of forcing women to carry these babies to term and then cutting public benefits that will support the babies after birth...
Life is precious, but once you're born you're on your own, huh?

True enough, MID, I think they have the old fashioned belief that women would think twice about having a baby if there was no money for it so maybe they wouldn't think about having sex indiscriminately. As we are all aware this is not true.

Yes. I think much legislation/policy is made with a utopian ideal of how things should be, rather than how things actually are. These types of decisions usually involve choosing the lesser of two evils, rather than a good option over a bad one...

This is probably also an area of the country where they think women's bodies have a defense mechanism so that they won't get pregnant if they are 'really' raped. I was trying to figure out the scientific basis and finally found it - there is a certain segment of the population that believes God won't allow women to get pregnant if they were raped, so if a woman gets pregnant it wasn't 'really' rape, probably just a case of a women having regrets after the fact. Because, you know, women are such silly little creatures, always saying 'no' when they mean yes....

Geez, even DF was upset about that stupid comment. Plus, the fact that this joker will not step aside and let someone who isn't a horses ass run in his place. He is just a douche canoe. Love that phrase.

Rick, you miss the point.
As much as you might want people to think before they act, THEY DON'T. There is no law you can pass or social sanction you can implement that will cause people (especially young people) to always make the right decision. It's just not going to happen.

But you're one of the first to say we need welfare and food stamps and Medicaid and subsidized housing because of people's poor choices so why isn't abortion right along side with your views?

Money speaks.

I guess this segment of the population also believes womens bodies won't allow them to get pregant if they can't provide for the babies. The same pro fetus people who wish to abolish abortion also wish to end welfare, medicaid, wic, and food stamps. Once the fetus is born, the pro fetus people don't give a flying leap anymore.

mmkay, are they willing to increase funding for medicaid to cover gynecological exams, STD diagnosis and treatment, etc from private practicioners? is it the state's responsibility to pay for those?? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say yes. Civilized society provides basic healthcare for women and provides it via Medicaid for those who can't afford it. Also, if affordable STD diagnosis and treatment isn't offered, we're going to end up with a public health crisis.

Civilized people should pay for and provide their own basic heathcare, male or female. STDs are completely preventable, people who get them ddin't have to get them. It's like people who smoke 2 packs a day, then complain they've got lung cancer, imho.

I'm willing to bet there's a fair number of people who got a STD from a supposedly committed partner who cheated on them. Plus there's the whole condoms don't prevent everything and the latency window from when you're infected to when the tests show as much is rather large for some of them.

Are people really too stupid to take care of themselves?? Some are stupid, some are disabled, some hit a pile of bad luck, some are lazy. I have issues with the lazy, but it's hard to separate them out. I'm just not willing to let people die in the streets.
