My family is full of night owls. This is tempered during the school year when we have to be up at 6:30, but the second we hit summer vacation, it all goes to pot. We stay up til whenever and wake up whenever. School starts next Monday and I'll have fun laughing at my kids.
Does something similar happen in your house?

I'd respond to this post if I wasn't busy sleeping on my desk from staying up to watch Breaking Bad. ;D
(In an ideal world, I'd sleep until about 10am, work from 11-7pm, and stay up until 2 or 3am.) DH is the opposite, he's up at 6am on the weekends and usually passes out a little after 10.

LOL! I was this close to staying up that extra hour, but decided to be good and go to bed. That and it was already 2 in the morning...

That world would be awesome, but only if everyone were on that schedule too!

Absolutely. We don't start until after Labor Day but I've already been telling them to start re-setting their internal clocks or it's going to be painful going back to school. I've even started insisting that YDS come upstairs with me (@midnight) but I know he's staying awake until later.
The late nights wouldn't bother me so much if they would at least wake up by noon.

We started last week and my daughter was a wreck trying to get back on schedule. She stayed up late on Saturday night, and I woke her up on Sunday hoping she would sleep last night, but she was still up reading fairly late. This morning was another crow-bar type of morning for her. But, she will survive.

Oh... I've already watched some. I'll delete 'em tonight. I think I've seen all of them except last night's, but let me make sure I saw last weeks. Dang Olympics threw me all off.

The problem has been that I'm wiped before they are so there's no way for me to make sure they get to sleep! Here it is noon and waking them up is so not worth it, they won't wake up unless they have somewhere to go.

Up at 6:30? Will you think I'm a horrible parent if I say this is much higher up on my list of Reasons to Homeschool, than it probably should be... We are night old too, but. Little better during the 'school year'... Which actually started today...

Last night's episode was excellent! Totally worth the exhaustion.
I have had the same internal clock since I was a kid. I think it must be genetic - I have never, ever been a morning person. My brother (and dad) are the same way. My sister is a perpetual morning riser.
It would be nice if the world was more accommodating to those of us who aren't programmed to be up with the birds... but alas, it is not.

I feel ya. Dragging my ass in here grumpy and exhausted every day at 10 isn't good for anyone. I'm not that productive so early, so the company would actually make out better letting me come in late and get their 8 hours out of me while I'm at my peak.

I believe it is. I was always up and happy in the morning. And my son has gone to bed early his whole life (except a day here and there.) My daughter would easily stay up until midnight as a baby - but not my son, no matter how hard we tried.
Have you seen Daniel Tosh's stand up about this? He says that instead of moving the clock 1 hour during daylight savings time, they should move the clock 6 hours, so half the year people with evening jobs feel normal. He then does a whole bit about ugly girls getting laid would be contained to "standard time." Hilarious.

If my theory pans out, then you are most likely living in the incorrect time zone. I was up and ready to go at 7:30 am PST, which is 10:30 am here. Sleeping until that time on the East coast brands me a slacker, yet over there I would be considered productive! ( don't tell any of the other Slackers...)

LOL - I saw your typo and was going to make some crack about the quality of teachers in your homeschool, or something like that. But the fact that you typed "old" gave you an out.

I am a schedule person. My favorite schedule was when I worked swings and all of my friends worked swings, too. I went to bed 3-4 hours after I got off work instead of the 6-7 hours later that I do now. That allowed me to wake up without an alarm every day without any concerns about being late, and actually even have time to get some stuff done before I went to work.

I will say that as a kid, I always thought I had mean parents because our bedtimes didn't really change during the summer- we could stay up maybe one hour later, but that was it. (And that was really hard, because in MT in the summer, it's light out until after 9pm for most of the summer.) Same for weekends. Bedtimes were bedtimes. Only time that changed was for 4th of July, because we had to be up until after dark to see the fireworks. It was the one day of the year I was required to take a nap, even utnil I was about 10 years old.

My parents also didn't change my bedtime, but I will say that it wasn't until I went to college and continued to go to bed at roughly the same time that I realized they didn't actually enforce my bedtime, I just went to bed at the same time basically from middle school on. It never occured to me to ask if I actually had that bedtime. It just seemed like the right time to go to sleep. Probably the one thing I did that made my mother's life easier.

Thyme: My parents didn't necessarily have to enforce bed time, but they did have to enforce "lights out" time. My brother and I typically got 30minutes to an hour after we were supposed to be in bed that we could watch TV (yes, we each had our own TV in our rooms) or read. Mostly, we read, and we both were big fans of the "just one more paragraph" or "Can I finish the chapter", both of which would lead to us reading for another hour or more if my parents hadn't enforced the lights out time. I will say, I also think it was easier to have our regular early bedtimes because of living in the mountain time zone. Prime time shows (Cosby Show, when I was a kid) started at 7pm, not 8, so we could watch family programming and still get my brother and I to bed at a decent time.

We don't enforce sleep time, but we enforce quiet time. The kids go to bed, and have to turn off "the big light" but can keep their bedside light on to read. My son lasts about 4 minutes, but sometimes my daughter will be up and reading an hour later. If she is up and playing in bed, we try to shut that down. She can play quietly with her dolls or whatever for hours. So, we do have a time where it comes down to "reading or sleeping." We decided pretty early to give her the power to make that decision. In general, she is a responsible kid, so it seemed the best way to handle it.

Between 8 and 8:30 for our kids, too. They get up at 6 am.

Yup! My boys are 9 and 7 and during the school year they get up no later than 6:15-6:30 to get ready for school.. so they are usually more than ready to go to bed by that time. I used to do 8:30 when the kids were younger. My DD lasted with a 9:30 bedtime till 7th grade. MY 9 year old son doesn't cooperate though. I can put him to bed at any time I want he just ins't going to sleep until 10:00.

Ya, no. That's, by far, one of the most difficult rules to enforce unless you plan on staying up significantly later than you make them turn them out AND plan on constant checks. They make up their sleep on the weekend.

The girls understand there are consequences - I just don't apply them myself, I let their bodies do that for them. Plus, reading! I don't put restrictions on that. They are not allowed tv or computers, but reading is good with me
