We have the same theory and it works out just fine. My daughter sleeps when she is tired.

That's what midnight to two is for. Except on Tuesdays, then midnight to 12:07 is for uh... other things, and the other hour and fifty three minutes is to decompress.

Yikes! 10pm? I'm going to be honest and say that part of the reason we do an earlier bedtime is because DH and I need an hour or two in the evenings to just decompress without the kids around. It would drive me nuts having the kids up that late. They're in their rooms. Hard to get over the awkward possibility that they'll hear you having sex, but still offers plenty of quiet time.

That's just wrong. The only time I'm ever up that early is because I haven't gone to bed yet.

*shiver* What fresh hell is this? Being healthy, looking good, living longer... I see nothing worth putting myself through that!

I'd rather sleep in and look good enough, thanks. Who am I kidding, I'd pick sleeping in over not totally repulsive.

My boys know there will be consequences if they choose to continue to disobey the rules... lights out means lights out. Period. How is my DS screaming at the top of his lungs in the dark supposed to help?

I'm mostly kidding. I at least make sure my two pack shows. Haven't seen my missing four in a while, and I've heard something about 8 which I personally think is a myth, but I maintain a little definition up top. When that gets too mushy my butt hits a gym. In the evening like a sane person!

Lots of kids have irrational fears of the dark.

How is my DS screaming at the top of his lungs in the dark supposed to help? Isn't your son kind of old to be screaming at the top of his lungs because of a bedtime? He doesn't scream because he is upset. He is just very ADHD and by bedtime his meds have so worn off. He basically screams all the time he is awake unmedicated. It just turns off like a light switch when he goes to sleep. If he isn't sleepy he will just keep talking to himself at top volumn since there is nothing to distract him. I decided that killing him was the worse option so I don't even try to force him to sleep anymore earlier anymore. Seriously if anyone has a way to make a very ADHD kid stop and be quiet tell me!!

Is that his diagnosis? He is screaming and running around? I assume you've tried behavior mod? ... Does he doesn't sit to watch tv or play games or anything?

Is that his diagnosis? He is screaming and running around? I assume you've tried behavior mod? ... Does he doesn't sit to watch tv or play games or anything? Actual DR diagnosis. He can stop some of it sometimes. Without meds the noise is intolerable to the rest of us. He doesn't really run around. He is more the quiet little movements constantly. The big deal for us is he is always talking. If he is awake he is talking period. I think it is just the stream of consciousness that all of us have running in our heads that we learn to just not say out loud. But in his case he can't not say it out loud. I know people hate meds but with the medication he can at least keep it from being loud. If I watch him I can see him looking like a ventriloquist sort of mouthing the words but not really making any noise. By 4 pm they have worn off and he is back to his constant stream of consciousness that is loud enough that I can hear him no matter what room he or I am in. We normally only really "make" him expend all his energy stopping the behavior when he is other places like at school, the movies etc normally during the day before they wore off. It is just so hard without the meds that it is like ordering him to flap his wings and fly to the moon to stop it. I keep hoping evenrually it will get a little easier for him to control it. that or he will be the person who as an adult will be flunking work ordered drug tests.

I'm against the ease with which meds are prescribed, but there 1) some kids who truely are helped by them, usually the ones for which 2) the benefits outweight the side effects and risks. I don't know. i've met very few ADHD identified kids with these kind of behaviors though? (actually not sure if any were as severe as you describe?) Have you thought of a specialist? too many doctors label what they don't know as ADD/ADHD... I hate to ask, gulp, but have you adjusted his diet? I'm sure you've tried most all of these things. So wish i could offer something constructive. This is going to sound counter intuative, but have you ever given him mountain dew? If so, did it have any impact on his behavior pro or con ? Do you see a therapist, because he would be able to give you specific behavior mod strategies... does he like to suck on anything, candy, a lolipop, something less sweet? that would keep him from talking... I can stop if this is annoying...

I can stop if this is annoying... when they have that list of ADHD symptoms it looks like a Chinese restaurant menu with you pick three from each column. Have you seen it? Well when we started doing the checklist for DS he had every single symptom in both columns. They said he is actually fairly mild as far as the problems it has caused. It bugs us as far as him giving us headaches but he really does just get on with life. He has tons of friends. He plays soccer. He is super smart and does well in school. But if you watch him he is always moving in some way. Mostly I will see him tapping his foot up and down or rocking a little type of thing. We have said for years if he is awake he is talking. With the medication he can keep it so you basically cant tell unless you are looking right at him. He has had some therapy. the normal kind he didn't like, or even want to do. He has gotten a lot of improvement from OT though. It has helped him get better control over his movements and it has spread to other parts of his life. He was on a special diet when young because he was allergic to dairy which he grew out of. Caffeine doesn't effect him like most kids. As far as food he gets excited about things like cake but not really from the food but more about how we just don't normally have cake in the house so it seems like a big deal. Oh well. I will stop hijacking Loop's thread and go to sleep myself. ;D

Loop my kids are going to be hating life when school starts here. We don't really have a bed time in the summer. We let them go to bed pretty much whenever they want (I do have older kids 17, 15, 12, and 11). I only get after them if they are being loud....or eating everything in the kitchen (seriously, my 15 and 12 year old would eat the entire house if I didn't stop them...both are ridiculously skinny too...hate them both!) I am the person that likes to stay up and sleep in. I HATE getting up in the morning. HATE IT! I don't think I should have to get up until 9 or so. I am not crazy person like MM and get up at 5 to run! (Although she is hot enough to make it sound like a good idea....).

I do remember hearing a statistic somewhere that crazy people are on average better looking than the general population. Her whole getting up to run thing reminded me of that for some reason.

Ya know...I asked my son the other day why he dates so many crazy chics....he gave me some story about crazy/hot ratio. He says the hotter the girl is the crazier she is. I could only shake my head and walk away.

It wasn't some story. By and large the crazy/hot ratio is pretty damn accurate. Sure, you can spend your whole life looking for an outlier, but you might never find one, and in the mean time you miss out on the opportunity to date all the hot chicks. Yes, they're crazy, but what are ya gonna do?

Well IMHO their crazy is more crazy than I would deal with....but I am not a 16 year old boy either. The one he is interested in here seems almost normal. He went to the movies with her the other day and watched some dance off movie. When I took him to meet her at the pool the next day and saw her in her bikini (which barely covered ANYTHING!) I just said...."AHHHHH I get it now. I totally see how she got you to go see a dance off movie!" Now I am just waiting to see how crazy she is...cause if the hotter they are...the crazier they are...this girl has got to be total bat shit crazy. She may even be MM crazy!

The girls go to bed between 8 and 9. No later then 9, but if they are tired they get to be little pains and we put them to bed sooner. A lot of it depends on what we did that day.

As long as they're quiet at night so I can sleep and be anywhere they have to be the next day (mainly just the 18 year old - work and she was taking a physics class/lab at the CC), I don't worry too much about it. I usually leave a to-do list for them and they get to it whenever they get up. When I was growing up, my summers were spent at a pool/beach club from 9 am (swim practice) until 10 or 11 pm every single day of the summer.
