We all know it isn't teaching I think it depends on how you define hardest. Highest level of skills, longest hours, most emotional stress, biggest risk, some other criteria? So, what's the hardest job in your opinion?

Anything where people's lives depend on you, emergency room doctors and nurses, firemen, paramedics and ambulance attendants, active military duty...that kind of thing. I don't know how those folks cope when they lose someone.

What I do is definitely not brain surgery that's for sure, though if you talked to one of my co-workers you would think that it is

I can attest that fire fighting is physically draining. Only did the volunteer thing, and would not like to be a full time fire fighter. On top of everything, fire science is always changing, so there are new things to learn.

from what I hear, being an "adult film star" is very draining.
Long hard days on set.
Low pay...unless you're really famous.
Unappreciated by the masses.
They really are the forgotten heroes :-(

Oh wow, I couldn't imagine doing that. Those kids are really inspiring though. So with the tragedy you also get to witness some of the best and purist of the human spirit.

I'd say any dangerous job where you put your life on the line every day: police officer, firefighter, soldier.

Farming. It's 24/7, you have to be an expert on animal husbandry, soil science, agronomy, weather prediction and mechanics. It's dirty, back-breaking, dangerous work in all kinds of conditions. Plus, it doesn't pay well.

I know this isn't the hardest job but I had a job which was very hard on me- call center rep. Many people call you with problems you didn't cause and treat your poorly. It was basically nonstop calls all day without a break in between- sometimes I just didn't feel like talking anymore!
The hardest part for me though was the constant monitoring of your time. If you were three or more minutes late to work or back from lunch, three times during the span of a half year I think, you'd be fired. Lunch was 30 minutes and everyone walked around with watches or pagers (pre cell phones) and were running around like mad to microwave their food and eat in time. It made me physically sick and on several occasions I got sick at my desk. I would go to the restroom and rest for a few minutes as there were couches in there, and lo and behold, a manager would come in and say "Spicy, you've been in here for seven minutes, is everything ok?" I also got in trouble for having too high average call times. Funny that I received many compliments from my callers that I was the most helpful customer service person they ever worked with but to do so took time to actually help them... the managers could care less, they just wanted me to speed it up.

Different for everybody depending on what their hangups are. For me, most of the jobs featured on Dirty Jobs would be challenging for me. Especially since so many of them are completely disgusting but don't pay well.

I know a guy who travels around the country cleaning tree roots out of sewer lines. He gets paid pretty well, but he's in shit all day.

I'd say Soldier is the hardest job. As for 'everyday career' type jobs I'd say the hardest one's are any where you have to get to deal with other people's messy ends or with what happens when that person manages to survive the 'messy end' which is now called a 'tradgic accident/violence'. Police, firefighters, paramedics, nurses, doctors, any first responder fits into that category. They deal with these things over and over and over.
The other 'hardest' job I say would be when one person is providing care 24/7 (or nearly so) for someone who was unable to care for themselves -espeically when it stretches into years.

I'm going with prostitution.
I find all sales positions to be terrifying. Add in uncomfortable shoes, legal troubles and the risk of dying on any given shift... no, thank you.
Among the legal professions, pharmaceutical rep (sales job + uncomfortable shoes) would slightly edge out any sort of first responder (risk of dying + sensible shoes) for me.

Accounting. Makes you insane. Accounting doesn't make you insane. People who go into accounting are insane. See the difference?
