Farming. It's 24/7, you have to be an expert on animal husbandry, soil science, agronomy, weather prediction and mechanics. It's dirty, back-breaking, dangerous work in all kinds of conditions. Plus, it doesn't pay well. They also have to know how to invest in the commodities markets.

I'm going with prostitution. I find all sales positions to be terrifying. Add in uncomfortable shoes, legal troubles and the risk of dying on any given shift... no, thank you.Among the legal professions, pharmaceutical rep (sales job + uncomfortable shoes) would slightly edge out any sort of first responder (risk of dying + sensible shoes) for me. don't forget the fishnet pantyhose. Soo uncomfortable.

Depends on the size of the farm. my inlaws had a dairy. they didn't invest in anything, which probably also explains why they are poor.

It's tempting to list out jobs like surgeon, nurse, cop, etc. But those jobs are well-rewarded, people desire to be in them and work hard to get there. I'm thinking the hardest jobs may be those at the very lowest levels of our economic system. Spicy mentions call center and that's a good choice...very stressful work over which you have little control or authority, yet you take all the heat. I was thinking of people like day laborers, dish washers, etc. Hard physical labor, low pay, rotten bosses, everyone taking advantage of you, being cheated by bosses, etc.

This topic is more about job difficulty than money, it seems. I'm going to move it to Off-Topic.

I'm going to go with seasonal farm worker You don't have year round employment. The work is hard, physical labor outside in the elements all day, regardless of the weather And, since pretty much no US citizen will work for what the farmers want to pay (since no US citizen wants to pay enough for their produce to make it possible for the farmer to pay better wages), you're most likely an undocumented worker who the foreman knows he can screw over, fire, abuse, etc with no consequences
So, that gives us hard physical labor, low pay, and terrible working conditions

POTUS. Nice perks but way too much stress. Living under a microscope for 4 years. Death threats against you and your family. Constant negative media coverage. Responsibility of 300 million souls on your shoulder. And lately because the nation is so divided, half the country despises you.
Other tough jobs: fast food work, migrant farm work, social work, day labor, call center operators, and hotel cleaning staff

And if we did they wouldn't all be gathering regularly to tell us that we suck, either.

"Hardest" is probably some high level CEO, or POTUS, something like that. Now that's balanced with the huge financial benefits.
I think there's a big difference between "hardest" and comparisons which take pay into account.

Good points all... especially the one about the "hardest" jobs tending to be the ones that people work hardest to do.
I think commercial fishing is pretty damn difficult. And sometimes the money is great but sometimes it works out to less than minimum wage.

I remember reading something about this many years ago and the opinion was that the most "stressful" job is laborer. This was based on the fact that if they don't work hard enough, they get cut loose. If they work really hard (and fast) they work themselves out of a job in short order. So, which do they do?

Military. If you fuck up either you die, or you get to watch a friend die. If you do everything right, you still might die or get to watch a friend die. Not all military obviously. I'm thinking special operations, infantry, etc. Oh, and the pay kind of sucks, but the benefits aren't bad. With the added perk of not fucking up involving having to kill people half a planet away that you've never even seen before because some old guy in Washington decided they're bad.

I think military and first responders are also good ones, they have the physical danger, labor, and often the social work type situations as well, dealing with women and children, death...

For physically hard I would say migrant worker - poor pay, shitty working conditions, long hours, bosses who don't even know your name, get injured or old - too bad.
For mentally hard - soldier or emergency responders (those who scrape the remains of kids out of crushed cars).

Teaching, most definitely. However, nursing is very difficult, too. My job is great except for the office politics. I think I want to the the queen of some country. I like their hours and accommodations.....

In many ways, it depends on the person. A job that would be hell on earth for one person may be very rewarding for another.
