I'm tracking food via myfitnesspal.com and I just had cheese curd as a snack. When I entered cheese curd in the food intake area, cottage cheese kept coming up, and I finally found a comparable entry for a Wisconsin cheese curd.
Is cheese curd really that rare?
I live in NNY dairy land, so we're inundated with the stuff.

Man, we spent a few weeks in Canada last summer with a friend and tried Poutine for the first time. I'm still fantasizing about it...
Never had it in Florida, North Carolina or Arizona and I'm a pretty adventurous eater, so maybe it's a northern states thing. Wish it would migrate south, though.

I've never seen it here. Of course it could be because I'm not looking for it. Let's just say you don't generally find it on restaurant menus in the Boston area.

I dont think I've ever seen it on a restaurant menu other than in poutine, but I can buy a bag of curd at the grocery store.

I'm trying to picture curd in a bag.
I enjoy traveling and trying new things, though. In Canada, the milk was also sold in bags. Made a lot of sense for the grocery stores - very easy to stack and store.

There are differences. Some cheese curds are batter dipped and fried. Others are bread-crumbed and fried. I don't know how the nutritional information varies between batter dipped and bread-crumbed, but on a trip to Wisconsin we bought plain cheese curds raw in the bag like you can buy cubes of cheddar in the bag. The nutritional information was on the bag. They were fun to eat. They were squiggly shapes and we liked how they squeak against your teeth when you eat them.
What's not to like, except the nutritional info?
ETA: Wisconsin sells all sorts of varieties of cheese curds, and that (in)famous burger chain Culver's has them on the menu.

I searched for "cheese curd" and "poutine" at the websites of my local grocers. Came up with cottage cheese and nothing.
I did find a couple of complaints about there being no poutine around Boston.
I only know what it is because I had aFrench Canadian neighbor when I was a kid.

Is cheese curd really that rare? --------------- Not around here, it's not. You can find little bags of it everywhere, including every corner depanneur. (Like a 7-11) I like poutine, but damn! You can't eat that stuff often...it'll kill you.

The freshest curds "squeak". In Quebec you can buy cheese curds in a bag the same way in other places people buy potato chips. Amazing. This province is really in love with their dairy products. Cheese curd is also what is used in poutine which is a combination of french fries, gravy and these curds. You can judge how fresh a curd is by it’s “squeak” factor: the more the cheese squeaks on your teeth the fresher and better the curd. Or as you would say in French “skouik.”

Why don't you just log the cheese curds as cheese?

I can get cheese curds at the grocery store (Whole Foods or Wegmans, can't say I've seen them at Giant) or the farmers market.
Huh, what do you know? Cottage cheese does pop up in my fitness pal. I did find Rogge's fresh cheese curds in there.

FYI in Nj they are called Disco Fries. I would think that they are called that in other areas also.

Dang. Well, I think maybe you just cured me of the poutine cravings. The "River Rat Cheese" conjured an unfortunate picture of cheese made from well, you know.

River Rat is a affectionate nickname for people who dwell on the shores of the st. Lawrence River.

Don't fry me in oil for this, but I don't like them....it's the squeak! It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. I am sure they'd be delicious melted, though.

Guess the lure of Poutine is strong enough to overcome my disgust at the mental image of cheese made from rats because this morning I'm back to really craving Poutine.
