Things I know we need:
-Onesies in various sizes - HATED THEM with a passion. You need a few basic baby items, but don't stock up on onesies until you know you liked them. It was probably because I had a winter baby that I hated them so much, but they were absolutely worthless to us.-Car seat -Diapers (we just got a Costco membership so we can buy in bulk, hopefully that will help) and diaper stuff like wipes -Bottles//nipples -Breast pump -Crib and waterproof crib mattress cover -Stroller (I should be able to get one free, a colleague already offered his old one) -Burp/cleanup wraps - Gerber cloth diapers work great for those -Backup formula - I would only get one can of this. WE had some given to us and it sat around I had to donate it to the food pantry because it almost expired. Also, they typically give some at the hospital. -Bouncy seat - This is a good craigslist or resale shop item. I would not pay full price for a bouncy seat (DS wasn't a fan, but he did like the swing, fortunately we only paid $10 for it). -Baby monitor - My vote is to splurge and go with a video moniter here. It isn't a big deal in the early days, but if you have adifficult sleeper ... I still wish I had one to use on DS.
Things I want:
-Baby wrap, maybe two - You can start with a Moby or sleepy warp although we did not get a lot of use out of ours, but i would hold off on an ERgo type carrier until your baby is here and you can go to a babywearing store and try out those carrieres. I also ahve a ring sling that i am so excited to use on a newborn. I didn't get it until DS was 8 months old and I used all the way through last summer. - Comfy chair for baby's room (we have no furniture upstairs except our bed and it would be nice to have a convenient place to sit and feed her) YES it is a must have -Co-sleeper or bassinet if a co-sleeper isn't possible (which it probably isn't, our bed is pretty high off the ground) - a packnplay with a bassinet feature works well for this. Although I have heard that the Fisher Price Rock n play sleeper is the best thing ever (I think it came out after DS was born). So that is another option -Teething toys
THings we bought the first week after DS was born - more spit up rags (well, gerber cloth diapers - we still use them to day as "snot rags"), a couple more swaddling blankets (although we did not use them very long because we did not swaddle long at all), and water proof multi purpose pads. They are great for changing the baby anywhere. If you have spitter, they work great to just have around. We have 4. 2 was not enough. Any free and clear detergent works great for the baby - we actually just use it for everything. We use purex because it works and it is cheap. There is so much that is family specific. Don't just take our word for stuff, think about your lifestyle and go from there. DH and I pretty much never use a stroller (seriously only about 5 times in the first year and about twice since then), but most people use them and love them. But we knew our lifestyle and we knew that for us, it was not a good idea

10 years ago they told me how much the babies weighed, too. But my daughter was very thin around the waist and had a tiny little butt (and 10 years later - the same, and I'll probably say the same when she is 20, also. Welcome to my family - where T&A are optional.) My son was thicker. So, unless your ultrasound tech was able to tell you the baby's measurements - you are likely going to find size "0 - 3 months" isn't a perfect fit. 6 years ago, DS was estimated to weigh 13 pounds 2 weeks before birth. He ended up 9 pounds. but they were right on the head circumference. a babies head can rip your shit up...say good bye to your nice looking lady parts :-(

I got a microwave sanitizer as a shower gift. What an awful contraption that thing was! It went bye bye after only a couple of uses. If I want to sterlize I'll just get my stock pot out and boil some water. But I am too lazy to do that too. Oh well, kid is no worse for wear.

FB? My sister said her Pack N Play was the best investment ever. I know someone mentioned that. I was just endorsing it! It has some tray you can lay over the top as a changing table. She loved it.

"kids are only supposed to sleep in the cribs...on their backs." I am from the time when they slept on their tummies...with their lil butts in the air (so adorable). My two did fine on their tummies and their heads aren't mis-shapen either.

Space heater. They are fabulous for getting a baby to sleep. New babies like it hotter than we can do. Especially useful for baths. Turn it on the bathroom, let it turn into an oven, and then wash baby. That way you avoid the crazy screaming. Cool, something I actually have ;D space heaters are great....until the carbon monoxide poisoning kills the kid!!

Rectal thermometer for sure. Usually the hospital sends you home with one. Vaseline too. Do you have to use a special thermometer, or is the one you use in your mouth okay? kids are only supposed to sleep in the cribs...on their backs...with nothing else in the crib. No blankets, no bumpers, no stuffed animals!! LEST THEY DIE!! Noted

You can use a regular mouth thermometer, but after you've stuck it where the sun don't shine it is not recommended you then turn around and put it in your mouth. It's officially become your rectal thermometer. Our nurse told us make sure to write in sharpie which one is which so we didn't get them mixed up.

Alright, who's had a baby recently (like within the last year)? Because at my last appointment they were able to tell me exactly how much Babybird weighed, unless they were just screwing with me. Obviously I'm not an ultrasound tech so they very well could have been.
They can guess, but it is not accurate. Once you get beyond 24 weeks it becomes more inaccurate. When I had a non-stress test and biophysical profile at 40.5 weeks the ultrasound tech told me that they cannot even see the entire bone they are measuring to get an estimate at that time. Late term ultrasounds can be off by up to 2 pounds in either direction and the reason is because they cannot see everything they are measuring at once and they are also taking a 2-d measurement of a bone and assigning a weight to it. Yes, they can give you an estimate, but trust me it is simply an estimate.

my baby liked it a little on the cool side. I blame the NICU for getting him used to it. Plus, he's a human heat factory, just like his daddy.
