Have bottle nipples improved? I used to hate sterilizing a needle to open up the holes in those darn nipples!! And then, I would place the nipples in boiling water to sanitize them...

You don't need baby detergent. I have sensitive skin already so we have to use hypoallergenic detergent regardless. Gwen has excezma so we had a few hiccups but we eventually found a detergent that works for everyone (Purex hypoallergenic). I wash her clothes with mine. You don't NEED sleep sacks, you can swaddle with a regular blanket. Way cheaper. There is a trick to swaddling but once you get the hang of it you can do it with your eyes closed. swaddling only works when your baby stays put.

So does your wife's work allow her to take the time to hand squeeze her boobs till they are empty? once pop the kid out, you should stay home with the baby a minimum of 2 years. And breastfeed the entire time.

This is the ONLY thing almost every single person has told me to buy new. Not sure why. But you're the first person to suggest a used one.
One reason for buying new is that if you are using a used one it voids the warranty (same with pumps).
Plus you never know if it has been in a wreck or not and in general you are supposed to get rid of them after that (there are exceptions we talked about over on WIR).
Then believe it or not car seats come with expiration dates.
I have nothing against used from someone I know/trust. I gave Gwen's infant car seat to my best friend. It has never been in a wreck and has plenty more years of use.
I would be squeamish when it comes to buying one off craigslist or a yard sale though. That's just me.

don't waste your money on a breast pump....the best way is the just squeeze the breast with your hands...it's more natural and healthy for the baby. Probably easiest if we don't pre-debate my parenting choices Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, I'm going back to work at the beginning of the year, I'm pumping so I can continue breastfeeding as long as I can, we're not cloth diapering (at least not right now), and although it may not work out, we would very much like to have Babybird sleep with us. At the very least, I want her as close as possible.

And then, I would place the nipples in boiling water to sanitize them... just use a pocket knife to open the holes in the nipples -- it will save you time, and the hole will be the right size.

I thought we were helping her with what WE thought was useful as veteran parents, but I guess anything that involves children comes with unnecessary bossiness and judgement.

I never sanitized my bottles/nipples or my pump. I washed them all in hot soapy water and called it a day. I found santizing to be a giant PITA so I skipped it. Kid is no worse for wear. we would very much like to have Babybird sleep with us. At the very least, I want her as close as possible. Then I really recommend a pnp if you aren't sure you want to co-sleep. That way you can have her in the room with you but you don't have to have her in the bed with you. You can always buy a co-sleeper thingy (they know more about them over on WIR) later if you find you really want to co-sleep.

10 years ago they told me how much the babies weighed, too. But my daughter was very thin around the waist and had a tiny little butt (and 10 years later - the same, and I'll probably say the same when she is 20, also. Welcome to my family - where T&A are optional.) My son was thicker. So, unless your ultrasound tech was able to tell you the baby's measurements - you are likely going to find size "0 - 3 months" isn't a perfect fit.

I bought one of those bears that played "the mother's heartbeat"...to soothe the baby (imitated the sound in the womb)...I loved it and it seemed to work. I still have it!

I had a whole bunch of 0-3 mos clothes. My kids were each over 9 pounds. They went right into 3-6 month clothes.

I swear we have one of these threads everytime a poster, a friend of a poster, a relative of a poster becomes a first time parent. Thyme put her kids in the the turkey roaster pan until they were 6 months old. That was me.

About the bassinett. My kids preferred their car seats as infants. Car seats are very cuddly - like being held. So, I just put the car seat on the floor next to the bed for the first 4 weeks or so. After that, I moved them to the crib. My daughter napped in the car seat for months. My son - not so much. This is why I'm hesitant to buy a bunch of things designed for her to sleep in until we know what she likes. My niece's favorite spot in the world to sleep was in the L of the couch, with the cushion on one side and the family dog on the other

For us zippered sleepers worked better than onesies. I didn't like dragging poop through DS' hair when he had a blowout.
Aden and Anais swaddle blankets. Expensive but worth it. They are large and made of a really airy fabric so they are great for swaddling even when it's hot or throwing over the top of a carseat or stroller to keep the sun out, without turning them into an oven.
White noise machine or app on the phone.
Space heater. They are fabulous for getting a baby to sleep. New babies like it hotter than we can do. Especially useful for baths. Turn it on the bathroom, let it turn into an oven, and then wash baby. That way you avoid the crazy screaming.

Sanitizing microwave bags. Throw some water in, the pieces to your pump and nipples and microwave. Easy peasy.

Rectal thermometer for sure. Usually the hospital sends you home with one. Vaseline too.

He ended up 9 pounds. but they were right on the head circumference.

And if she can stand it, we'll be spending a lot of time in the car during her first few months. I thought we were helping her with what WE thought was useful as veteran parents, but I guess anything that involves children comes with unnecessary bossiness and judgement. You told me yourself to be careful of that! So, unless your ultrasound tech was able to tell you the baby's measurements - you are likely going to find size "0 - 3 months" isn't a perfect fit. Got it.

No blankets, no bumpers, no stuffed animals!! LEST THEY DIE!!
