You don't have to heat formula at all. The mindset is that babies prefer warm milk and then of course when you keep serving it heated eventually they will never accept it any other way, so you keep on heating up the bottles..
When I would use bottles I would serve it to Gwen right out of the fridge or at room temp, she never had a problem with it. Daycare never really warmed the bottles up either. Since she never learned to prefer her bottles warm she never got in the habit of wanting them that way.

Formula doesn't have that powdery issue that hot cocoa does.

Formula is designed to mix better in cooler water. Fill a bottle with tap water, scoop some formula in and shake. It mixes just fine.

I remember when I was younger and babysitting, we always had to heat the formula up to a certain temperature before giving it to the baby- testing a drop on our wrist thing to make sure it wasn't too hot or too cold. That's what I did!

Everyone I've seen bottle-feed over the past few years has just dumped some powder + room-temp nursery water into a bottle, shaken, and served Why didn't I do that?

Everyone I've seen bottle-feed over the past few years has just dumped some powder + room-temp nursery water into a bottle, shaken, and served That's why I thought it might be necessary to heat the formula at some point. Mixing powder with room temperature water... ugh. Have you ever tried that with hot cocoa? But maybe powder formula is different. it's different - it blends much better, nothing like cocoa.

Room temperature I can do. Thank you all.
Also, thanks everyone for the comments about space heaters. We do keep our house a little chilly, but have the awesome heat dish, so I'll make sure that gets cleaned and ready to use.
And in my continuing hijacking of Firebird's thread- I need more ammunition information regarding waterproof crib mattress pads. DH is against buying any because most crib mattresses are already covered in a waterproof material. In my mind, you want the mattress pad for quicker clean up in case of explosions- just take off the mattress pad, and put a new one on and baby can go back down (after the baby has been cleaned, obviously). If they're right on the mattress, then you have to clean the mattress right then, too. Are there other reasons? We have to have the crib and waterproof mattress/mattress pads for the home inspection. Not that we can't buy the mattress pads later, or anything, but I'm just wondering.
Firebird: I will say that my friends LOVED their Pack N Play. In fact, since their daughter is now 3 1/2, I'll be stealing it for our future little one. In addition, at least by the time their daughter was 9 months old, all the mom wanted was an umbrella stroller. She hated trying to cart around the stroller that the car seat attached to because it was big and unwieldy.
We bought a subscription to Consumer Reports in order to research cribs and car seats. I'm glad we did, but it's really kind of scary how poorly all car seats do on Consumer Reports testing. I am finding the reviews very helpful, though- like the top rated car seat that can't be balanced on the front of a shopping cart, but has to be placed in the basket- can't CostCo shop with that. Or the high rated carseat where pretty much everyone's kids complain about their bums hurting.
I've also learned that at Babies R Us and Target, I can't walk in and buy a crib. I have to order it. However, we have a Burlington Coat Factory with a Baby Depot not too far away, and we can go in and look at all the cribs and buy directly from the store there. The reviews we've read on all cribs pretty much say that if you're getting any finish other than natural, you should buy it and get it out of the box early in order to let the noxious smell of the finish dissipate before the baby needs to sleep in it.

I've never used a waterproof pad on the crib mattress. However a lot of the ladies on WIR swear by doing a sheet/pad/sheet/pad taht way you don't have to take everything off the mattress in the middle of the night, you just pull off the first couple of layers and you are good to go. It's a personal preference thing. If I talked to DH about it now he'd probably be for the pad since he has sheet changing duty.

Word. Those huge strollers are a total pain in the ass. We had one of course, because everybody does, but it got used way less than our little umbrella stroller that would actually fit in the car with enough room left over for groceries.

For mattress pads - they add an additional layer of padding between the plastic material & the skin. Just having the sheet straight over the mattress makes the sheet slide around easier & isn't as comfortable. Plus with explosions (or even just a bottle leaking) a the mattress padding material will soak a lot of it up. The sheet won't soak any up & you may find your kid lying in a puddle or stuff dripping off the side onto the floor.

I use a flip lid trash can for $10 at target. Poopy diapers go outside. Just having the sheet straight over the mattress makes the sheet slide around easier & isn't as comfortableReally? We've never had the sheets move on the crib mattress as far as I can tell.

Nope, they switched to these cool looking gizmos that seem like a good idea, until you go to empty them and realize you bought a big diaper sausage making machine. They do smell a lot less than just using a trash can or whatever though.

I've also learned that at Babies R Us and Target, I can't walk in and buy a crib. That is odd, is it because of the kind of crib you want or what? I walked in babies-r-us, bought a crib, & walked out with it. Of course that was 4 years ago, but it is hard to believe they wouldn't stock that stuff.

We bought our crib at BRU as well, you could walk off with it that day if you had a way to transport it home. We chose to do layaway becuase DH hasn't cleaned out the nursery yet so there was no where to put the thing.
I guess it depends on the crib you want and the color you want. I know they didn't have a huge stock of every crib in store or every color. We got the Graco Lauren in Walnut.

We've never had the sheets move on the crib mattress as far as I can tell. Not extensively move like with sheets coming off or anything. Just the movement you get with fabric on plastic - it slides easy. Unless maybe you have super tight sheets then I suppose no movement would be possible.

Does nursery water have fluoride in it? Yes I just used tap water, but then we have pretty good water where I live. ETA - I looked it up & now you can buy nursery water without flouride. They didn't use to offer that.

We're probably super tight sheets. They don't quite fit the mattress, but I wasn't going out to buy anymore so I told DH make it fit.

Nope, just a run of the mill nutter. Just for kicks you should take the huge stroller grocery shopping before baby arrives. To make it super realistic pick up a watermelon right when you get there and carry it one hand through the rest of the store (it's standing in for the baby who inexplicably loves their car seat/stroller right up until you get to the store and they start freaking out). Now on your way out you've still got the watermelon in one hand, while you push the SUV size stroller with the other one and carry your groceries. Then you get to try getting it folded back up and in the car while still holding the watermelon. The kid is supposed to go in last according the books. People get car jacked fairly often while putting things in the trunk or whatever, and you don't want the guy driving off with the baby.
