I wouldn't call it "strict." The dress code simply said something like unnatural and distracting hair colors were not allowed. You have to understand that sometimes these can be gang related as can having numbers and symbols sculpted into your haircut.
Heck, even a lot of kids wearing a pencil over the same ear has the potential of being considered gang related.
It was school policy, and I enforced it. But I hated it because that student and my relationship was changed (for the worse) forever. I was no longer someone trying to help her. I was the Enforcer.

I think so. They let half the lunch ladies and the older teachers have blue hair.

I am a bad parent. I am going with my girls to get nose piercings. I had mine done for years but had to take it out for my student teaching. Now that I am in Italy and it doesn't look hopeful on the job front, I will be repiercing my nose. I am letting my 11 and 17 year old get theirs done as well. IMHO nose piercings aren't that taboo anymore. No big deal. I know others will disagree with me, but I do not care.

I responded by going into the bathroom with a needle, my high school logic, and the post/stud from my ear pearcing. Yeah. I have a permanent hole in my nose because I now understand, as the rest of you do, that the earing posts/studs used for noses are much smaller than the ones used to pierce ears. My mom is awesome, but I wish she would have taken me to get a proper nose piercing, one that would grow in like yours and your daughter's will

My original nose piercing grew in fine. You can't even tell I had it pierced. I would like another one. I probably won't be able to work for the next 3 years so why not? The last one I had for about 4 years before I took it out.
I will have to do more research on the 11 year old though. She is Indian and I know dark skin tends to scar differently than white skin. We will see. I may make her wait until she is 13. We will see.

She's also asked for a nose piercing, but we're nixing that one for now. Don't worry, eventually she'll just go and get the piercings and ink on her own.

It is illegal to tattoo someone under 18 in my County with or without parental consent. Piercings can be performed with parental consent and I consent that s/he can wait until they're 18! ;D

Here you can get your ears pierced at 16 without parental consent, but they changed it so for everything else you have to be 18. Tattoos have always been 18. I take my dad's stance, you can get those things when you are old enough to pay for it yourself and sign off on it yourself. Then once you realize what a dumb decision it was you can afford to have it removed. * *That was in response to my brother annoucing at 14 he wanted a giant wolf tattoo etched on his chest. My dad told him come back when he is 18, if he still wants it then he won't stop him.

Exactly! When you're an adult you can go and waste your money on whatever you want. Just make sure your bills are paid first!

They can find places to get it done. I discovered DDs belly button was pierced. She had it done at the flea market! Then she did her nose and a second hole. Thank GOD she let them all grow in and now has the one nice hole for her ears. She was underage at the time. I let it go because it was already done but if I could have found out who did it, hell to pay! No tats, yet, she knows the rules and even now she has changed her mind so many times that I'm glad I was insistent that she wait. Our school has the same policy about hair being a distraction. They do let it go for a few days after Halloween because someone always does their hair and then realizes it doesn't wash out right away!

Wow. I know the professional places won't do it because it is more than their licenses are worth, I have no clue what is out there underneath the radar.
I'd be so pissed, not so much because of the piercing but because god knows what she potentially exposed herself to getting the piercing where she did.
That still doesn't mean I have to sign off on it though. If she really wants it that badly, she'll want it when she is old enough to get it without my permission.
Once my brother's money was on the line and he realized how much it would cost plus the number of hours he'd have to spend in the chair, he quickly changed his mind.

I got my first tattoo at 17. The guy didn't even bother to card me. Of course I was 2 weeks from being 18 so I hid it from my mom until after my 18th birthday. She still freaked out.

Are you insane?!?!?!? (I mean that in the nicest possible way I have a relatively high pain tolerance - I'm normally fine with needle sticks, piercings, whatever, but I remember the nose stud hurt a lot more than the ears did and that was with a normal-size needle. Please tell me you didn't try to pierce your belly button?

I know a bunch of teen girls that pierced each other's noses and belly buttons because their moms told them no. They had a sleepover and did it. I just looked at them in total shock. I am too much of a wuss to do it myself.

Fortunately for my future, I had done all of the partying and rebelling I cared to by the time I got to college where I focused pretty hard on studying. I didn't pierce my belly button. Girls I knew that did always had problems with them rubbing on their jeans and pants. I was too lazy to go through that kind of hassle. Also, not my style.

Yep, finished it last night. It looks pretty good actually. There are still a few lighter spots near the roots in the back. I got a little lazy applying the color, and I'm not a hair stylist to begin with. On the whole it looks pretty good though. Way better than my first dye job.
Now I just need to head back to the beauty supply store and get the lime green and more bleach for the younger one. She'll be a lot easier though. She got my thin hair, and it's shorter. Her older sister got my wife's thick hair.

Piercings can be performed with parental consent and I consent that s/he can wait until they're 18! ;D ...riiiiiight. Yes, it's illegal without parental consent under 18 in NY and CA. Probably similar in other states. That being said. I wasn't addressing the legality, just what might occur if a kid "really" wants a tat or a piercing. If someone is highly motivated, they can get around this. Same for drinking. So many parents believe that "their kid won't do that" because you, as a family, have open discussions about it and you've made it clear what is right and wrong....blah, blah, blah. So many kids, who are doing well in school, well in sports, have jobs, are responsible, don't get in trouble......are blowing a lot of smoke up their parents asses. The minute they walk out of the house....all bets are off. They're on their own until they come home that night. You can't exert complete control over any human being. It's one of the most difficult and anxiety inducing experiences as a parent, allowing that freedom that comes with risk. But, I've gone off the original topic. Do the purple hair thing....she'll either love it or hate it, but will be ever so grateful that Dark let her try it. Loop in the other hand...she hasn't weighed in yet?

You think I'd dye the kids hair if she was against it? One of them would be mad at me for a day or two then get over it, the other wouldn't sleep with me for weeks. Which one do you really think I'm going to risk pissing off?

It's one of the most difficult and anxiety inducing experiences as a parent, allowing that freedom that comes with risk. I think that is whole point of the teenage years. To give you a taste of actions having real consequences while you still have a safety net if you really f*ck up. I hope I feel that way when my kids hit that age.
