Not sure yet. It was a busy weekend so we just bleached. She's rocking a very unnatural shade of pale blonde right now.

What I don't understand are the parents who pierce their baby's ears. WHY?!

So they don't look like boys.
It is cultural around here. Many of the children of hispanic descent have earrings.

My previous neighbors pierced their dog's ears. I'm not sure why.

I thought that's what pink onesies are for?

I don't get piercing infants ears. As if you don't have enough to take care of at that time.

What I don't understand are the parents who pierce their baby's ears. WHY?! Neither do I. My boss even asked me if I was going to pierce DD's ears now and I said, No, she can make her own deicision later on when DH & I feel she is mature enough to handle taking care of them herself. For me, it just looks unnatural to see a baby with earrings.

Totally sexist. Onsies are uni-sex, and pink is a perfectly acceptable color, since some dude on ESPN wore a pink shirt once. Therefore, all boy babies should be in pink onesies, and no one should think that is weird at all.

I thought that's what pink onesies are for? Not really, DD could be decked out all in pink and I still get asked if she's a boy. Right now, she just doesn't have alot of hair, but it is growing in!

I was hoping that one was trying to get a job doing piercings and needed practice - but wouldn't you take the studs out if that were the case. Nope - that stupid dog ran around the neighborhood for months with blue-gemmed stud earings. Until animal control took the dog away for not being on a leash, and not having a license or shots.

My mom had the same problem with my older sister when she was a baby. She used to tape a bow to her head. It's mildly obnoxious, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. It's a short phase that the kid will grow out of pretty quick.

Just when that other conversation was getting good you guys had to go and bring the rape stuff into it. Keep it out of this thread! So, this weekend I'll be helping my 11 year old dye her hair purple. Ready go! Not a big deal. My nephew has veena getting a summer vacation mohawk since he was 5. This year (he's 9), my sister let him dye it red and she took him to her salon to get it done. It looks awesome, hope your daughter enjoys her lavender hair!

I have a really bad scar for my 3rd ear piercing on one side, and decided to completely take out my eyebrow ring when I was concerned that it might do the same thing since I was taking the stud in and out. I now know that I scar easily...
The logic people use on piercing infants ears is that mom and dad are 100% in control of taking care of the piercings so they know it will be done right, and they won't remember the pain.
I think its crap and can't wait for the in-laws to ask me about it so I can get on my soap box.

Oh - so you are going to be one of those judgemental moms who tell everyone when you believe they are doing something wrong, huh?
Can't you just say "I'm not going to do that. She can pierce them when she gets older." Or do you have to lecture everyone?

Damn straight you have to lecture everyone. That's like the only perk you get for dealing with the pregnancy, sleepless nights, shitty diapers, vomit basically everywhere, freaky ER trips out of the blue, giving up your entire social life, etc., etc. Now you want to take away the only perk??? Eff that.

Yes I do because obviously anyone willing to mutilate their baby girl based on fashion deserves every possible lecture I can come up with and then some! I'll only get on the soap box with my in-laws IF they bring it up, and IF dh doesn't ream them for it first. I think its weird to pierce baby's ears, but I don't think it will actually damage them (although the small scars will never heal).

Does your school system allow kids to have purple hair? Ours doesn't, and one of the hardest things I ever had to do was to write up a cute little girl in summer school who dyed her hair magenta. It totally ruined our rather pleasant relationship. It was her one birthday present (she had it done professionally), and she got to keep it for all of one day. I almost wish I hadn't and let "someone else" notice it, but it was my job to enforce the school's policies.
My point is that if you are using permanent color, make sure it's ok for school or have an exit plan since school probably starts in about a month.

How come it wasn't allowed, susana? Was there a really strict dress code or something?

Yes I do because obviously anyone willing to mutilate their baby girl based on fashion deserves every possible lecture I can come up with and then some! ------- How about mutilating baby boys based on religion? Should they wait until they're older and decide themselves? You KNOW that they're not going to go for it, if that's the case.

Leaving aside circumcision arguments... "mutilating" a kid for fashion and doing it for religious purposes are not exactly the same thing.

I mutilated mine for fashion. I'm not a religious person. I did it when my son was an infant so his bits wouldn't look like a deep sea creature of murky, unfathomable oceans.

We do feel like that is a decision he should make for himself.
