Just when that other conversation was getting good you guys had to go and bring the rape stuff into it. Keep it out of this thread!
So, this weekend I'll be helping my 11 year old dye her hair purple. Ready go!

I don't really care but I wouldn't go for the permenant stuff. I had friends who did it themselve and eventually stopped because it is a PITA. It's also insanely expensive to get done at a salon. Temporary dye that washs out, sure so that way if she gets sick of it I am not having to help figure out how to change her hair back.

The temp stuff washes out in a few days. It always says it'll last for several weeks, and it never does. Plus the colors never come out as vivid. We're using this stuff blocked due to malware/-gf_kiPnoCII/T908NV9McHI/AAAAAAAABoE/nUl_2qQci4M/s640/0000ar5d.jpg[/img]

My sister and her youngest DD (8 yr old) died a portion of their hair blue for our vacation. It was super cute. ;D Have fun hair dying.

That seems to be the thing. Thanks Katy Perry for making every young girl want to look like a ball of cotton candy.

She's also asked for a nose piercing, but we're nixing that one for now.

Yup, thanks Katie Perry. However, I don't think your hair has to 'die' . . .

However, I don't think your hair has to 'die' . . . Well... to get really good color youu have to bleach the crap out of it first, then you have all the stuff in the dye itself... your hair does tend to be pretty fried by the end of it.

It was that or Manic Panic Purple Haze. So, do you go with the sexual or drug reference? I was honestly a little torn, but DD liked the Splat color better.

Our rule with DH was nothing permanent, like tattoos.
However, clothing (as long as it wasn't obscene) and hair - who cares.
DS walked around through most of high school with very long hair, which was unusual in our conservative rural Southern town. He got negative comments from my inlaws and my mom, but I told him he could do whatever he wanted with it. It's just hair. And his GF at the time thought it was sexy.
When DH was young he and his dad fought CONSTANTLY about how long his hair was. A lot of fury over something very stupid, IMHO.

My DD has naturally dark hair. She has been pink, purple, blue, etc.
To be pink and blue she had to bleach her hair. The blue looked really good, but washed out really fast and left her hair a very odd color, so she re bleached it and re-did it. She changed her hair so many times in a short period that her hair got very damaged.
She still dyes her hair, but she goes not go for the funky colors anymore and she only goes a few shades lighter than her natural color.
You can get a beautician to put in hair extensions that have color. They have a bead that is crimped at the root with a pliers. The last several weeks, and you can wash your hair with them in. DD did not care for them overmuch. You can DIY too, you get them at Sally's beauty supply.
BTW DD used the Manic Panic Purple color.
This seems to be a common teenage thing. My beautician's daughter is the same age as DD. Her DD changed her hair color so many times that her hair broke off at the roots. Beautician kept telling her daughter what was going to happen, but she would not listen.
Good Luck

Love it! I still say that I'm going to have a strip of blue hair eventually. Part to the left, boring corporate america chick. Part to the right and my true rock star shines through.

It doesn't last that long and does facd pretty quickly but it isn't just dye. In order for it to be even a slightly more than a hint you have to use a bleach that is in the box. So you are bleaching the hair then dying it whatevery color. For my DD I put my foot down and only let her dye the bottom 4 inches of her hair. She has pretty long hair. This way if it looked aweful or made her hair fall apart we could just cut it off. ;D also be aware that if you pick a color like green. As it fades it is going to go through all shades of green as it fades including shades like vomit and gang green. Just a warning. It wasn't pretty! For the fading shades we bought some blonde hair dye. It looks really nice and since it is already bleached it actually does look blonde.

That was my mom's rule with us too. Hair, clothes, and piercing's were fine. Tats were a no.
I started growing my hair out in sixth grade and had it shoulder length or longer from then until I was 18. I spent several years dying it black, and occasionally blue. Had my eyebrow pierced until I joined the military.
That's why I work at Hot Topic now. We all know that letting your kid look like a freak is like a lifetime sentence of working retail at some schlocky store in the mall.

I wouldn't say that long black hair and one piercing is actually "looking like a freak." I mean - have you been outside? There are some serious freaks out there. (I pass the high school to and from work - FREAKS!)

I had my tongue, labret, and eyebrow pierced by the end of HS. I miss them. I'm sure my mom was THRILLED but she never said anything. And eventually I had to take them out to get a real job during college, so I guess she won

Yeah, but I'm old and grew up in a small town. I was the only boy in my class with long hair. When I dyed it the first time I was the only kid with a non-natural hair color. Sure, it was just black, but on my pale ass it's unnatural looking trust me. I couldn't even buy good black hair dye locally. I had to get it in Vegas.

You are a great deal younger than me, and all the boys had long hair when I was a teenager. And we all dyed our hair black. But, I know where you grew up. I'm not even sure they know they are part of the US - so maybe you were shocking.
Also, I think the fashion was a more trimmed look when you were in high school. You were there when all the white kids had fades, right? (I was there when Ozzy was biting the heads off rats.)

So if you already have fairly light blonde hair, does that mean you don't have to do the 5 minute strip process first?
Also, if you have light hair, does that mean there's a possibility the dye could be more permanent?

Generally the lighter/drier one's hair is, the more dye it soaks up, and the longer the dye lasts.

Will you also be providing her a pair of bunny ears, a japanese school girl uniform, and tickets to anime expo?

Bowl cuts were pretty big in the area I grew up in, or buzz cuts.
I am 30, but I grew my hair out at 12, so it was 18 years ago. 12 years ago I shaved it all off sold my butt to Uncle Sam. Haven't had hair since.
All over.

I was about to say I have furniture, clothes and appliances all older than Dark. Old, my ass. Well, my ass is old. At least older than Dark's.
As for the OP....I like those purple highlights. I think it's cute. I wish my nieces were girly enough to do that. Nope. Tomboys, every last one of them.
Now the six-year-old nephew likes dolls and might be a candidate for the highlights, on the other hand. ;D

This thread is boring. Where's all the people from the other one that were saying letting your kid look different is painting a giant target on their back, and you'll ruin their life forever?
