You know, besides reading, it's restoring guitars and hotrods. I like old things, exploring the California desert and ghostowns. ;D

I enjoy doing cross stitch and pencil puzzles (not just the regular crossword). those are definitely easy on the wallet. the damn expensive hobbies are what kill me. well, kill my budget, anyway: -concert cruises - I've been sailing 3x/yr for the past 2 or 3 years -playing ice hockey - the equipment is a one-time expense, replacing as necessary. the ice time? yikes. I play a full season that runs Sept-March, plus tournaments that happen all year - tourney fee plus travel costs. I'm actually sitting in a motel room on Cape Cod right now, my first game is tomorrow morning at 9.

Ghost towns? Do you have any pictures you can share of your explorations, Roy?
What do you enjoy cooking the most, Tess? Do you have a favourite chef or cook that inspires you in your daily cooking?
I like doing that too, cael. I'm thinking of writing again from the long break which I took. I was hoping something would motivate me.

I love beading, and collect gorgeous beads << been doing this since 1972>>. Meditation and Brainwave Entrainment and everything associated with it. Learning is a passion of mine as well.

I used to write a lot when I was in high school, mostly fanfiction but I haven't had the time or inspiration in years to write. Have been trying slowly to get back into it, I've missed it! (original or journaling, not fanfic anymore lol)

Depending on the time of year.. This season.. Gardening, minor home improvements, walking, studying and writing no matter the season, listening to music and to certain spokes' people(s) and reading in here, what's on the minds of others..

I guess with technology and the internet around and the many socialising sites available, some would find spending many/few hours of their day online.

Roselia~! Yes I have tons of photos on FB. I actually have a goldmine on the edge of Death Valley CA. My dad (the geologist) bought it in the '60's, and yes there is gold. (though the US gov. has done everything possible to stop us mining it.)

, This is the 90 year old miners shack at the beginning of my claim, to the right is the old dynamite shack, then the loo! At the onset of WW2 the US gov, shut down mining operations noting that there were over 100 mines in the area producing LOTS of precious metals. They extended the borders to encompass all the mines and deemed the area a national park. Hoping to shut the miners down. There are only 52 of us give or take left. The gov. systematically blew the entrances (claiming for safety) and made it illegal for us to to mine ore mechanically. My dad and I over the years opened the entrance again, (as did the rest of the families) The park service trys to keep us out (they've fenced my road in, put boulders down, etc.) But we (I) just move them and ask them nicely to leave the prop. I go once, twice a year, for a week at a time. Closest civilization is 60 mi's away. It's fun, and yes, there's gold ;D

The actual mine opening itself. The shack is to the left down the slope, yes you have to climb up the side of a hill. The cable running to the mine used to carry the ore bucket back and forth so the original miners didn't have to carry it down the hill.

I love doing stained glass projects, digging in the dirt, reading and travel. Last year I took a glass blowing class but it didn't turn into a hobby.
I guess I could call live performances and concerts a hobby since I spend a lot of time and money on them.
I admire people who paint and do handwork of any kind. I don't seem to have the talent or patience for either but I sure can appreciate the work.
ETA: Love the pictures Roy. I sold a home to a guy from California back in the 70's (when RE was a hobby) who owned a gold mine, in Nevada I think.

It's kinda unfair when the Government restricts people/owners from doing what they want with their own property. I love the photos and thank you for posting them. I wish I could travel around the world. The Sahara Desert is on top of the list. ;D

Their "claim" at the time was that it was a world war, and they were "protecting assets" No, what they were trying to do was gain control when they realized the area was so rich in ores.

Gold mining as a pastime, doesn't appeal to me, i was a coal miner for 40 years, not a pastime, more like a necessity. Playing Golf, Lawn Green Bowles, gardening, Reading, and listening to music is more in my line of a pastime.

You really wouldn't like digging for gold, Jack? ;D Don't know of anywhere in England where anyone can dig for gold, the Kings and Chiefs of ancient Britons use to where gold torques round their necks, and the warriors gold arm rings. Don't know where they came to get the gold from though. They made many a Roman soldier rich when the might of Rome invaded Briton. They do mine for tin though in Cornwall, don't know anyone who wears tin rings and bracelets though. Diana's wedding ring was made from Welsh gold, not much gold left to be mined in Wales, that's why her ring was so tiny. Now coal, that is something we are not short of, only they seem to be reluctant to mine it now, closed most of the mines down, it was once know has black gold.

But it puts the US Gov in a bad light and Death Valley is a jewel in their crown, would look good for them to tarnish that crown

I can look at this a lot of ways. What do I spend the most time on? What do I enjoy most? Socially what is the most fun? Which costs the most?
I enjoy sleeping and napping the most and spend a lot of time there.
Golf takes about 4 hours. A tournament up to 6 hours. I don't do tournaments anymore. Golf is a 3 season sport. I do have sports I participate in during the fall and winter.
Physical fitness with resistance weights and other fitness programs. Golf also falls in this category as well as in the social category. Tennis is more socially enjoyable for me.
The most costly is snowmobiling followed by golf then my gym membership. Indoor tennis and target archery during the winter.
I belong to a social club that has many activity groups and I enjoy the people. I am a member of two book groups and one foreign film cinema group. The cinema group is probably the best value for the money. I use the public library books since I already paid for them. ;D We also borrow movies from the library.
If the snow is decent and the outdoor temperture not too cold, I will cross country ski. I haven't skiied in 4 years.
