It's going to be a while before I could get a hold of Hunger Games thru interloan. A few weeks before the movie came out, patrons kept coming into the library looking for a copy of the book, one after another. I did some digging to see who had free copies to interloan. All 89 copies in the system were checked out!
I remember a few years back at a system meeting, a discussion of whether or not to even buy Hunger Games. Many librarians weren't sure if kids would read them, and wondered if they were too extreme for the YA crowd.

I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but I've read all of the twilight books--I blame pregnancy hormones! I know they aren't well written and not an original storyline, but I was hooked for a short while there.
I don't think Bella is a good role model and I might have different thoughts if I had kids in an age bracket that would be reading it, but I didn't mind that she was flawed. Every other book (and movie) the female lead has to be perfect at everything, and sorry but that isn't real either.
I'm going to try to join in for the hunger games. I don't have a lot of time right now, but I may break down and get the audio book so I can listen during my commute.

I read and enjoyed the Twilight books. They were delicious. Like McDonald's for your mind I passed them on to DMIL when I was done and she enjoyed them too. Apparently DH's cousin saw them and asked why she was reading books meant for teens. I'm not sure what MIL answered, but as far as I'm concerned, that's the nice thing about having a PhD from /$SCHOOL; you don't have to prove anything about being smart and can read whatever trash you like. ;D The movies, on the other hand...ugh. And what on earth do people see in Robert Pattinson?

"Anyway, I've read The Help, but not the others on your list. When you all talked about "We Need To Talk About Kevin" before, it sounded kind of depressing IIRC, I don't want to read anything depressing either. LOL I don't want to hold you all up though just because I don't want to read certain books" This is kind of how I am as well. I don't like to read things that are really depressing but I think we all have the opportunity to opt out of any of the books and can also join back in when it is something we are interested in. I agree. I think that I would have to avoid some of the darker books. I don't see how the Matthew shepard book could be anything but horrific & depressing. And the Kevin book that was discussed on a previous thread sounds depressing as well.

I have a copy or two of the hunger games... if you need one, pm me and i'll send it out ... you can pass it on when you are thru... doesn't take long to read ... I think with fiction its best to pick a date to be done with... rather than try to discuss in stages... some will be ahead, and its too hard not to give away 'spoilers' ... concepts change as the plot progresses, etc. This isn't as true for non-fiction...

A coworker is going to lend me the book. I'll get it on Monday. As predicted he's giving me a hard time about reading it bc my message board is doing it.

I asked my daughter to ask her friends if I can borrow a copy. I have a Kindle app on my ipad, but amazon won't do the free lending for it. Library is a long wait. Maybe I'll ask around work too. I agree with oped that we should pick a finish date instead of stages.

I just finished The Help. It was really good, I was surprised by how much I liked it since it isn't something I'd normally pick. I've also read Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother which I found myself agreeing with more than I thought I would, it isn't near the horrific bad parenting book the media made it out to be. I really liked The Tiger's Wife, that was one of the first books I bought for my NOOK. When we get a computer I plan on checking out The Hunger Games on the NOOK, that's next on my list of books I want to read. I read Twilight before it took off and blech .. Bella either needs a good smack on the head or half a dozen Prozac shoved down her throat. I never read the rest of the series. I agree with Dark that if it was better written I might have kept going but it is BAD. Stephanie Meyer managed to get incredibly lucky and hit hte market at just the right time. Makes my skin crawl anytime someone compares Twilight to Romeo and Juliet. Please don't put Shakespeare in the same category as Stephanie Meyer.

Never read Host.
Another fiction book I really liked that is kinda unusual is My Name is Memory. It's about a guy who is able to reincarnate and has spent his entire life looking for a woman he was in love with centuries ago. It sounds cheesey when you read the back of the book but it was actually REALLY good.
If you like werewolves The Last Werewolf is really good. It has extremely graphic sex scenes though so if that makes you uncomfortbale I'd pass.

LOVED The Help. Tried to read Twylight, but dozed off. Just can't relate to teenage angst..
Best book I've read recently was "People of the Book". Although it is fiction, it is based on fact. The Sarajevo Haggadah really does exist (which I did not know until I had finished the book). Well written with suspense and mystery woven throughout.

I'd like to discuss the hunger games trilogy. We read them for the book club I'm in and had great discussion on depth of characters and how they changed, political issues, relating ideas to greece, rome, and hollywood today. Even though it's a YA series, it has several in depth ideas to discuss

this summer I read "A Thousand Splendid Sons" and "The Secret Life of Bees". Both were excellent. I quite agree on both (our local book club reqd both a while back) Also, saw the movie, "Secret Life of Bees" and thought they did a good job. Anyone read "Ladies No 1 Dectective Agency"? HBO did the series a couple of years ago and did a great job. Loved the book and series.

I read the first book of the Ladies No 1 Dectective Agency. I didn't really get into it, wasn't my type of series.

Anyone read the new Anne Rice bool Wolf Song?
I am tempted to buy for the NOOK it but after Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle (it was absolute crap) I am really hesitant to purchase any of her recent books anymore.

I gave up on Anne Rice... her books really bore me. She will spend an entire chapter talking about the wall paper in a room or something. Just too much for me...

I did enjoy the Women's Murder Club books a lot though...

I love Autumn Bridge and Cloud of Sparrows. They are a Japanese historical fiction/fantasy. When it all comes to together in the second book it's quite amazing.

I couldn't get thru the MayFair series, I tried but I didn't like it as much as her Vampire Chronicles.
All the books after Merrick were horrid, I felt like she cranked them out just to suck money from her fans. It's made me hesitant to buy any more of her books.
This one is just enough different I am tempted but not really sure.
I read the two books her son Christopher wrote. I really enjoyed those.
