[/size] In this case it’s not a good example. As I have said before, when the USA was formed; science and religion were very much forged. As things progress, RELIGION was still here and continued to give GOD a bad name. Science began to disprove such this as... Adam and Eve, the accuracy of biblical timeline ECT... SO naturally there was NO God (creator). However, now we have discovered and can prove that dark matter and energy are inside of everything in the universe. Show me some scientific evidence like that about pink elephants and unicorns and I will be the first one to start a farm for either one. ;D

which means some people may be capable of less empathy than others ----------------------------- And some are capable of too much, like my son. He weeps at the thought of a hurt animal. He used to bring bugs home, insisting I take them to the vet. 'Mom! This bee only has one wing! It's suffering! You have to take him to the doctor!" "Mom! I saw a raccoon on the side of the highway! We have to go back! It might be suffering! You have to take him to the vet! You HAVE to!"

There was a young fellow working at the corner store with MS. My son would cry when he saw him. "Mom! It's not FAIR!"

Well, that's comforting ... someone with religious leanings who rapes, murders, etc while feeling fully justified that they are upholding a god's law is AOK. Ok, that's NOT really comforting, just being facitious.

So yes, start your farm because according to the rules I don't have to prove anything.

Religious law is for the difficult decisions, the easily rationalized, the war against the ego, the things that "seem right" at the time, the things without immediate consequences, the problems with "no right answer", the things that aren't innate, and for the people who prefer to ignore the suffering of others.
Christian law, for example, is certainly not innate to human nature. Various bits and pieces of it, perhaps, for different people. But to say the whole of it is innate is like saying that an understanding of university-level physics is innate. Some of it comes naturally and some of it can be learned through blind experimentation, but an in-depth understanding without protracted, meaningful study? Not on your life.
If you want to define what is ethical as what is "innate to most people", start striking off the list: marrying for life, not cheating on taxes, loving our unborn children, living within our means, suffering troubled relatives, forgiving others who've harmed us, respecting our elders, etc., etc. because all of these are either minority traits or rapidly becoming so.

Before we decide that a behavior is innate and wired into our neurons, it would be a good idea to examine whether it withstands changes in our circumstances. If the new neuroscience has taught us anything, it's that the lives we lead can reach into, and change, our very brain circuitry.

And as times get tougher, I have no doubt people will be utterly astounded to discover what their fellow man is capable of.

That doesn't prove pink unicorns don't exist, Virgil. That proves white unicorns don't exist. Pink unicorns are still a mystery. ;D

I'll have you know I delivered the keynote lecture at the 2011 ICCC (International Conference on Colourful Creatures) in Adelaide. The equus unicornus slightum pinkus is most certainly subordinate to the same genus as the equus unicornus extremum pinkus. I dare say my postdoctoral work on the slightum pinkus is the foundation on which all coloured unicorn research is based. Away with you, madam! I say away with you!

Oh Virgil, you put that extra "u" in coloured, I like that. Do you also write a cheque and not a check? All this talk of equus unicornus extremum pinkus is getting to me.

I can't see energy and matter, for that matter. Well, you can see some matter there is no doubt about that. Also, are you a non believer in oxygen and gravity? Two things that we can’t see but we know exist.
