We have a scheduled clean out of my grandmother's garage and attic coming up. It is a take it with you or trash it clean up- I am the only one who does not live there who is permitted to store anything there- simply because I am 1- my grandmother's favorite grandchild and 2 I live 4 blocks away in a 1 br apt. My favorite part is that once we get the garage cleaned out, we get to tear it down! The guys never usually let me help, but my uncles have said if I am not sick, they will let me help this time. YAY! Sledgehammer....

We keep a plastic bin in our closet in which we place unwanted clothes and other items as we "discover" them. I get emotionally attached to items making a big closet/house cleanout hard, but I find that I can discard items one-by-one. When the bin is full, the items are donated.

I took 2 very large bags of clothes to the Womens Domestic Violence center on Friday. Also took a bag of toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc) too. My closet is looking so much better!!!

I finally hauled the dead de-humidifier up the basement stairs and wheeled it to the trash can. Mother Nature piled 3-4 inches of snow on top of it, maybe it's a sign somehow? lol.

"Throw out" something when something new comes in the house. Junk mail, I put into the recycle bin before I come into the house. If I could get Verizon to stop sending me a solicitation every other day, my pile would be much less. Sheesh. Ideally, everything should have a "home"; unfortunately, I'm not quite there yet, though the outside observer would not see my clutter until a through inspection of my closets.

I so want to get all the clutter out. I want to be able to walk into my walk in closet. I have been ebaying as much as I can but I have a feeling one day I may get tired and just donate whatever else I want to get rid of. I think I am going to list the items on ebay in auction, then if it doesn't sell, then for a month on Buy It Now, and after that if it doesn't sell I will donate it.

Unless you REALLY need the money, just donate it now, take the tax donation, and be done with it! Why waste so much time and effort over the next couple months?
(at least... that's what I would do!)

Sometimes ebay and craigslist can be worth the effort. In the past month I have made over $1200 between CL and ebay. No way I would get that much for a tax write off if I donated it. So far this year- 32 items sold on ebay, 3 big items sold on CL (treadmill, weight machine and sectional). 3 loads of other misc stuff to the thrift store and 1 load of books to the library. Making progress

I emailed my cousin (finally) to ask her if she wants any of my baby gear. I don't think she will, as she's pregnant with her 3rd and she does in home dcp so she's pretty well stocked for gear. I've got somebody who will take everything "boy" that I've got but I felt a need to clear it with my cousin first.

I don't necessarily need the money but I had an unexpected medical test that resulted in $4000 worth of bills in January and my daughter's wedding is in June. Plus I had to put an unexpected $1000 into a vehicle in January.
So mainly I would just like to recoup a little bit of the unexpected expenses. In January on eBay I made $170. So far in February I am at $184.
It is just all small items which makes it look like I haven't done much.
But I am hoping by June that maybe I have at least made enough to pay for the trip for my daughter's wedding.

So much stuff to go to Goodwill that I had to rebag it in bigger bags. Started going through stuff at my mother's and found a way to get rid of some stuff- give it ex-SIL who is moving. Looking for a couple of sentimental items that I am going to be really angry if they are broken- one is a pie plate that I was given by my great-grandparents at my first wedding- I was the last girl to get one- and the only great- granddaughter. The other item is a crystal bowl, also a gift from that wedding. My brother's ex-gf stole some things when they split and I had boxes stored in their garage from where my ex and I split because his gf was living in my house. I have seen those pieces, so I know they made itout of the house- plus his gf knew who I was and knew that I knew who she was and where she worked- I trained her to do her job. Either way, there is still a lot to do over there.

Cleared with my cousin. Now I just have to line up my parents to watch the kids while my nieces and I go though the kid gear. 1. Go though the baby clothes, if it's boy box for D. If it's girl, box depending on size. (I've got a taker for the bigger stuff at dcp) 2. Go though all the gear, if it's boy, box for D. If not, Goodwill 3. Sort all the toys and find all missing parts. If it's newborn and boy, box for D. If not, Good will. 4. Load all stuff possible for D into niece's car for her to unload on D. 5. Load all Goodwill stuff into my car and take there.

I had to drive to 2 good will drop offs, but I donated $209.00 worth of FMV items... A TV, a TV stand, clothes, books, throw pillows, blankets, audio books.... etc...
We barely fit my fiance into the condo with all his stuff... but most of it has been crammed in & put away for now. We need to work on getting a desk with drawers for the living room (we eliminated the TV in the living room and swapped it with his computer (its on a folding table) but he had 9 boxes stacked all around the desk since it doesn't have drawers.... so we need to get a new desk... and soon....

We're re-using a toy as a bribe to get DD to sleep in the twin bed instead of her crib. Success rate after 2 nights is 50%... The toy is a large wooden dollhouse passed on to us by friends. She loves it so I'm hoping once we get a railing on the twin bed, she'll be ok sleeping in the bed alone. We've told her the dollhouse has to go where her crib is and the crib is going into DS's so she'll have to sleep in the big girl bed...
And we're playing musical pack n plays with the end result of no pack n plays or boxes or parts left in my house. Yay!

I'm so glad it is March 1st!!! I'll be even more excited with April shows up. Still working on garage sale stuff. My boys keep playing with the baby toys in the basement that I have boxed up. I walk on the treadmill while they play. It is so funny to see them play with them. They think they are the most wonderful things ever. I need to start organizing my stockpiles.......cleaning supplies, laundry det, health & beauty, etc. It is out of control. I'm clearing off shelves in the basement (not buying anything new) so I can start lining things up. Health & beauty items will be in our upstairs closet - again, after I clean it out.

I know an old woman who moved into a nursing home. She sold her house with ALL contents. Let the new owner dispose of it.

However, between watching hoarders and buying a kindle she is now getting rid of most of the books. ;D

we broke down and got another small bookshelf for some of the books... & its stacked 2 deep... at least now when i open the closet a book might not fall down and hit my head...
I may have to fight the battle one book at a time... But I won't be buying any more books this year as i just inherited a library of books I think I might actually enjoy reading.

Thanks to this thread I went through the closet in our spare bedroom and now have 2 large boxes to donate to good will and a garbage full of stuff that was ripped/stained etc.
I also have some books that were given to me that I am never going to read that I will include.

Hoping to start going through stuff at my grandmother's (or the rest of it I should say) this weekend. I must be totally ruthless as I have a 3x6? storage area at my apartment and everything else has to come in the apartment.

My mom was keeping some of my things from my high school and college days. When I look over the stuff, I think "why did I hang onto this crap?"
90 % was tossed, donated, or recycled. I had magazines from the 80s. wtf was I thinking?

I sent a dresser that I wasn't attached to at all (even though I probably needed the space) to my ex-SILs for one of my nieces, and have gotten a little more ruthless with the clothing. The shirts that are no good are going into my rag pile (saves paper towels), jeans go to donate or my mom (I have ungrown some of them) and everything else is trash or donate. The books will have to wait unless one of the schools or doctors wants them because our local library is undergoing reno. I also have a pizza stone with rack that is going to my SIL because I have never gotten to use it and hers was kept by her 2nd ex (not my DB). I was also able to give her my old pans, and a set of glasses...

Jenna--I block out the thought of my parents house. So many bookshelves.... Not to mention everything else.
I love reading, don't get me wrong. But I don't like to spend money on something that I will only read once. I get most from the library, and if its something that I really love I'll put it on a wish list to buy.

I have toyed with the idea of getting one of those e-book thingies for some of the classics that you read over and over and over. The idea of eventually having to clean out my DGMs house frightens me. Stuff, stuff, and more stuff

I re-read books. DH knows not to suggest that I toss what's left. I weed the collection every time I move it and it's pretty much as small as it's going to get.
If you're moving, I'd suggest that you figure out a plan for the books at the new place (like in the spare bedroom but a bed and dresser still need to fit in there) and let him decide how to make it work. Also, it's up to him to pack and move the books. I always clearly labeled my book boxes so I could reshelve them correctly (I worked in a library for a LONG time) and quickly. Physically handling every book let me realize a. how big the collection was; b. how little I'd read/touched some of the books; and c. how heavy/awkward they were to move and shelve. Of course, I also wanted to sit down and re-read everything instead of packing...
