Beth- That's me- I get my books out to re-shelve, organize or go through and the next thing I know, I'm in the middle of Romeo and Juliet, or Emma, or The Kite Runner- again....
This weekend will be the first big reorganization move from my DGMs. Wish me luck.

I love this thread. Im getting ready for a major move in June of 2012. Im already planning. Ive gotten rid of a big cabinet, via freecycle and have other things on there to give away. Ive thrown away some big kid stuff...mini trampoline, barbie house, bags of crap...etc. Ive got a three bedroom house with a huge playroom, ready to purge it all. I would like to get all my leftover possessions down to one of those mobile storage and move units. I have giving away clothes and other things like crazy to the crisis pregnancy center thrift store, and goodwill and people I know. I figure if I can bless others than that opens the doors for our family to be blessed in the future. I would rather do that then sell it. Although I will sell some things, just sold a small chest freezer for 50.00. Dont want to move it and it will reduce my electric bill. win win

While the books are still here and shelved for now (and crammed in the closet), I did get him to part with a box of VHS tapes.
Looks like Good Will Round 2 will begin to pile up...

I found 2 unopened containers of cat liter in the basement. I just left a message for my bff that if she finds cat liter on her back door this weekend, it's from me and to use it or pass it on. I don't remember if her cats are fussy about it or not.

We recently got rid of ALL our VHS tapes! We did not watch them in years, so out they went.
Now, to get the husband to get rid of the VHS players....

I agree with I would rather give it away than sell it. I like how you look at it as working on blessings for your family in the future. I am not getting ready for a move but I am so ready for a good purging of "stuff" in the house. 3 bags in the guest room and a good size pile in the basement, it sure feels good and will be even better when I get it out of the house! Just have to arrange to get it to a friend who drops it off at a charity on his way to work.

We recently got rid of ALL our VHS tapes! We did not watch them in years, so out they went. Now, to get the husband to get rid of the VHS players.... We only have one DVD/VHS player, but we keep it unplugged in the bedroom next to the TV that isn't even plugged into the wall because we don't pay for cable. I would suggest you keep ONE player in good contition incase you have any home movies...

We bagged 15 13 gallon bags of clothing to go to Goodwill at my moms today. Plus we found a few things to go to ex-SILs new place and found one of the 2 items I have been worried about- my crystal bowl. I'm not very attached to things, but that bowl was a very special gift. I have also bagged up stuff at my place to go to Goodwill- I think there are 5 bags here- but honestly I didn't count. I have a stack of books (old textbooks) to go to recycling because they are no longer in use and the library won't take them. But I am doing well with this project.

Well, the cat liter containers are in my car today. After work, I'm going to drop them off at bff's back door since I didn't get to it over the weekend (I forgot all about it) but better late than never, right?

Does anyone know if those digital picture frames sell for anything? When my fiance and I were setting up the TV in the bedroom so I could watch a movie, I discovered my old Digital Picture frame that I haven't turned on for over a year or so.... so I've basically decided to take the photos off it... but I was wondering if its better to sell it or donate it?

Depending on how expensive it was to start with, I would probably try to sell it. When we bought my mom one for Christmas a few years ago, it was $80 on Black Friday. I assume that they've gotten cheaper, but depending on how much time you want to spend on craigslist/ebay, you might be able to get $40 out of a nice used one. Maybe do a quick ebay search or craigslist search for your area and see if it's worth the trouble.

My DS and DIL were here a few weeks ago and I told DS to go through the closet and dresser in his former bedroom from when he lived here. He filled one trash bag, made a pile of clothes to toss, another to donate, one to take with him, and packed a box of video games to take with him. Next time he's here I want him to go through his books.
I am pretty pared down, clutterwise, because I moved from a big house to a smaller one a few years ago (although I do have some concentrated areas of clutter, like my home office). The thought of cleaning out my sister's house and my brother's place - OMG. They are both in poor health now but who knows? They may outlive me.

Went through our closet again. Another 2 large bags of clothes to donate. Particularly proud of DH since his clothes amounted for about 70% of that donated. What I donated are some pants that have gotten too big for me (yeah for weight-loss ) Need to tackle DS' closet tonight hopefully. Already have a full load pull together for the thrift store. DH is going to haul that down tomorrow after I go through DS' closet tonight. It's my last week with DH on lay off so I need to work on my to do list and keep him busy

I was sick over the weekend, which derailed my plan to empty the workshop and bleach scrub the walls and floor.
DH has lost a lot of weight and really needs to clean out his closet/dresser and get rid of the stuff that is too big.

We finally brought the outdoor winter decorations inside - a deer and a skiing polar bear. DD loved turning the polar bear on - gotta love not quite 3 year olds.

Ok, I've got at least 1 helper lined up for tomorrow. This time the plan is to go though the kids' dressers/closet and sort the clothes. Then start gathering up the baby stuff and piling it 1 place.
And you can see from my last few posts why my house is a cluttered mess. I've said I wanted to start several different projects and didn't touch any of them...

My weekend project- if I get nothing else done is- 1. Get laundry done, including linens. 2. Clean my stuff out of DGMs garage. 3. Finish my to-do list around my apartment.

We finally went through DS' closet last night. Hauled a shelving system we weren't using in there and organized everything. Ended up with a full garbage bag for good will. This joins the 3 bags that went earlier this week, along with 4 chairs, 3 folding chairs and two boxes of books. We also sold a dresser on CL.
DH goes back to work full time next week so I am trying to get as organized as possible before then. He has "promised" me that we will go through the under stairs storage this weekend. Will likely end up with a few more boxes of books to go too.
It's insane how much we tend to accumulate. We have purged and purged and not purchased anything new in a long time but we still have stuff to get rid off. I am not convinced the junk is not only breeding, but inviting friends over for parties!

DH lived up to his promise and we organized the under stairs storage this morning. Have a TON of books to sell, donate, etc (our bookshelves are in this closet). Progress

Went through what I could of DGMs garage yesterday- a lot less of it was mine than what appeared to be- apparently I got more of my stuff out than I thought for. I found my collectible pie plate. YAY My bikes and tennis rackets were ruined because someone or someones went and stacked stuff on them- bending stuff up. GRRR. Mostly trash out there though- that was easy. I went to do laundry yesterday and my DM and DB decided to do theirs instead I told them I was coming to do laundry this weekend- duh! Still working on the to-do list in the apartment, but I have until 9am Thursday to complete that.

If you ladies don't mind, I may join you. We have a 3 month old baby and with rearranging our place to fit him in, everything feels smaller and more cluttered. I doesn't help that my mother, bless her, was sending us daily packages of baby gifts because she was so excited. We got a jumpstart this weekend because our city hosted an electronics recycling day - we got rid of all our random chargers, a vcr, outdated video cards, and my old computer stuff from college (I graduated in the days of the dial-up modem). That also prompted me to put into the recycle bin my old Kaplan SAT teacher's box. Between all that, we cleared out one wall of one closet. Next I was to hit my closet - I'm down to about 15 lbs over my pre-baby weight, so I don't want to get rid of everything that doesn't fit at the moment. But I had a number of skirts and things that just barely fit and those, I"m pretty sure I'm never getting back into. No matter how much weight I lose I think my hips are just permanently bigger.

Welcome kjsh! I don't know if my hips will ever downsize again- as I am a runner- no kids, I spoil my DBs 2 DDs and send them back- but clutter is an ongoing problem at my place because I live in a 1 BR apt. This place is actually smaller than my bedroom was at my DGMs.

kjsh- Welcome Thanks for the reminder about the city electronics day. Our city does one too and DH has a decent sized collection of "stuff" (I'd call it junk) that needs to be brought down to them. Thinking I will call the city now to see when that is. Congrats on the new baby. I know you don't want to be mean to your mom but you are going to have to set up some ground rules with baby presents (as nicely as possible). This is a common complaint with people. Try to nip it in the bud now or presents for the baby will start to take over you home. I mean this in the nicest possible way. mizbear: Sorry to hear that some of your stuff was damaged. But yeah for finding your pie plate. I know that was on the list of items you were really hoping to find.

I actually DID something this weekend! Woohoo! My sister and I went though both of the kids dressers and their closet. I now have all their outgrown clothes boxed and labeled by size and gender. I have a taker for the boy stuff, under 12 months. I think I have a taker for the girl stuff 2T-3T. I MAY have a taker for the girl stuff, under 12 months. They won't find out gender until the birth and that's early May. I don't know if I want to hold onto it or not... I started to pile the baby gear on the pool table in the basement. Some of that will be going with the boy stuff, I need to find out what exactly she wants, otherwise she gets it all and can deal with it on her own. It's a start...

Beth that's a great start! Mizbear - congrats on finding your pie plate. It's always good to find the special things that you really care about. Thanks all for the welcome and the advice. DS cooperated enough this morning (thank you ceiling fan for being so fascinating) for me to pull out about 10 items. I was even able to try on three skirts that I was on the fence about. One fit okay enough that I'm going to keep it as a last minute work item since I have so few work clothes at the moment. It's not a huge dent in my closet, but I'm a packrat at heart so I'll have problems if I try to get rid of too much at once.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by how little was damaged of my stuff in the garage, but I was pretty upset about the bikes- they cost over $100 each to replace based on what they caost when I bought them and my DB said that for 1 bike with the features of both put together I am looking at several 100. My uncle and cousin are going to look at the bikes before they go to the curb to see if they can fix the problems on one bike at a lesser cost to me. Otherwise, I guess I better get back down to my running weight again . It is cheaper... The damaged Study Bible that was in the garage can be replaced. I was relieved to find that me gift Bible from my 14th Christmas (I spent it in foster care with a wonderful lady who makes you think everything good about the foster care system) was NOT in the garage. Unfortunately, the Study Bible, a gift from my 1st ex-husband, was water damaged. But, my grandfather used to say "You can only read 1 Bible at a time". I was totally stoked about finding the pie plate though. It is a collector's item and I am the only one of the granddaughters to have one. I also have my Mother's (which will go to my brother) and those plates will be given to his daughters (he has 2) when they marry. They can not be found new anymore as they stopped making them in 1976- the year I was born. Today, after taking DM to the doctor, getting her Rxs filled, and getting her more soda (she can't shake the flu), I have been shredding and filing and cleaning OH MY! I also came up with 2 more bags for goodwill. The next hard thing around my place will be deciding on what to do with all the flannel shirts when I no longer fit in them. I am stuck between donating them, or making each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild a piece of craft work with a piece of the flannel shirts in it. Of course if my niece has her way (she's 11) she'll just take all of them to her house and keep them. This weekend I have to pull my treasures out of the garage- with the trash- help take down 2 offending trees in DGMs front yard and help reshingle a roof...if it doesn't rain...
