I agree. The government shouldn't be giving kids ANY information on sex, no sex or whatever. That's the parents' job...and if the parents aren't willing to do it, they should not be raising children. Why? Seriously, I'd like to hear why you find sex ed so objectionable.

I have no objection to sex education, as long as it's the parents who are providing it, not government employees...

A neighbor had a daughter the same age as mine and we were pretty good friends. She was much more conservative than I am, and felt I was too open, too early, with my kid and sex ed. She finally decided it was time to have "the talk" with her daughter. Not only did her daughter know more than the mother realized, she ran and got her Barbie and Ken dolls to show mom the various positions. Ahem.
Another child, whose mother was <gasp> more liberal than I, had given sex ed classes to several of her friends. The child had not been cautioned, as mine had, that this topic was not to be shared among friends. Unless we keep them locked up, we can't protect them all the time.

It is my business when, where, and how my youthful fellow citizens learn about sexual issues. I pay taxes to schools and vote for school board members who will direct teachers to teach comprehensive sex education.

Gee, teenagers can rationalize away behavior they wish to engage in. Any other late breaking news?

I was/having been trying to find - with no immediate success - the article I read earlier today - that oral sex is leading to more cases of head and neck cancer - human papiloma (sp) virus, tonsils etc. - but an emerging health crisis

One thing they don't seem to teach is that Type 1 Herpes CAN be transfered to Type 2 places... for want of a better explanation... you don't have to have an active sore... you can slough off cells before you have an active sore... so that would definately be an issue with oral... People think they are safe cause they never actually had 'sex' and then end up with herpes...
I have to say though, i'm not sure i'd count it as 'had sex'... does a girl lose her virginity if she gives a boy a bj?

Agree 100%. Stick to reducing spending, taxes, deficit and repealing the awful health care bill.

Heh. Vonnie, I hate to break it to you, but Bill Clinton didn't invent the idea that oral sex isn't "real sex". That idea was alive and well in the 50s.

My mom started when she was 14 in the late 70's and I started just before I turned 16 - sex that is, I was doing most everything else at 14 and 15.
My mother was very, very open about sex. She couldn't exactly hide her early adventures considering how old she was when I was born. She told me the basics, told me to be careful and that she would buy condoms if I was too shy to do so myself and that she was always there if I had any questions. I took her up on that a few times and did ask her some questions. I appreciated her openness on the subject.
I second the "you better get on that soon". 12 isn't too early. He's just a few years off.

LOL! No, you wouldn't have seen it on Leave it to Beaver! The Brady Bunch is a bit younger, I'm afraid. If you were a teen in the 50s and didn't hear the "oral sex isn't real sex" argument, you must have been living one very protected life! Boys, after all, did talk to one another, and they did share what they thought just might work.

I guess my point here would be that sometime hormones erupt and stuff happens - but too much of the time there is no thought because it is (wink wink) acceptable - you know everyone does it - and it is pop culture - what they see on TV, in movies, videos etc. I think teens ( as I remember) are always one step ahead of us - if its OK in the main stream - they are going a step further

You hit the nail on the head, Vonnie. The real precurser to teen sex is ... the onset of puberty. We're biologically programmed to enjoy sex, and our hormones see to it that we understand that. That's really all that's necessary to start the ball rolling. All parents can hope to do is educate their kids, try to impart all the knowledge they have about not only the physical side, but the emotional side, and hope for the best. We're not miracle workers, and we're not going to stop biological urges. Best we can hope for is a little self-control.

Kids, with high self esteem, are less likely to be influenced by peer pressure and less likely to be looking for love in all the wrong places. Fostering self esteem is important and needs to start before the hormones kick in. It could be a significant factor in how a kid responds to the hormonal onslaught.

And if schools really want to be effective they should, IMHO, be teaching the economic impact of unplanned pregnancies and what it takes financially to live in this world. (I think this would/could be the most important class most HS students could take)
