Just to give a little more detail. This happened to me today. I was at a grocery store in a poor area. I like the store so sometimes I go out of my way to go there. The woman approached me at checkout and I only had $20.00 worth of stuff in my cart. She had already shopped and had a cartload of food to take home to her family and it looked like decent stuff so no kids are starving at home. She said she just wanted a little cash and $10 would be enough. So what would you have done?

I think I'm missing the details. Are you saying someone approached you with an EBT worth $20 according to her and she wanted you to buy it off her for $10?

Sorry, what she wanted to do was pay for my groceries using her ebt card. She would step in a pay using her pin. She would pay the $20 and keep her card then I was to hand her a 10 bill.

I dunno. Bought her a bowl of soup? All of these similar topics are confusing me.

Specifically what you should say is, "It's illegal to sell your food stamps. You're lucky I don't work for a government organization because you could lose your benefits. Think about your kids, you selfish bitch."

I would explain to her that it's illegal to do that and I don't want her privileges taken away.

My ex-sister in law tries the same thing all the time. I cannot wait until the day that she approaches someone that is a cop or in some level of authority that can take away her benefits and (hopefully) throw her in jail (again).

Someone trying to abuse the food stamp program? Sorry Piratesparrot but that couldn't have happened. You see I have said that abuse of government programs was going on & a huge number of people told me that "Those poor people need those programs & there really wasn't any abuse". I'm guessing that your sugar levels were off & you must have imagined it.

I'm guessing that your sugar levels were off & you must have imagined it. I can tell you that my niece (18y/o) her two sons (both under 2) and her 40 y/o mom don't need $800 a month in food stamps!!! I think it is an abuse simply because the average 4 person family that works probably doesn't spend that much a month on groceries. They sell what they can so that mom can smoke. I also think that if they cannot find jobs (which both the mom and niece say) that they should have to work in the food stamp office doing something to earn the money (or some other office). Even if they had to sit in a chair in an office without a tv or a cell phone it would be better than allowing them to collect without having to do anything. Food stamps should be a temporary solution not a permanent one. I am offended by the fact that they cannot get jobs because they are too busy playing xbox all day and night on my tax dollars. Perhaps I shouldn't have gone off on this tangent - but my gosh I just hate the fact that food stamps are abused so much!!! I would hate to see the kids hungry, but I truly believe that if the food stamps weren't available that a job would be found by someone in that family.

apple suz I'm all for assistance when people are trying to help themselves, but I swear sometimes I live in the welfare capital of the nation... I've always thought that after a certain period of time, anyone on assistance should have to show up to a building somewhere (on-site daycare so "I can't find someone to watch my kids" isn't an exuse) from 8:30-5:00 (sorry, no paid lunch) just like they would for a real job. In this building would be no tv, but many educational books, access to instructions on resumes, more efficient job searching, access to applications, wanted ads, other material that would increase your success at finding a job. You don't show up, you don't get paid. I don't see why it wouldn't be fair--I have to show up at work to get money and if I want to make more money doing it I'll find another job. My ex-bf's son has been on UE for a couple years now--he's 21 or 22 and had only had a job for a few months before he got fired, and couldn't work at WalMart because he failed the drug test. People will always find a way to cheat the system, but I'm not going to help if I can avoid it.

She gets $800 per month for food for 4 people? Well things have gone just like someone on these boards once said. The non working (under privileged poor) are better off than those that have to support them. (We live pretty high on the hog & don't spend anywhere near $800 per month for food).

Tex - they eat way better than I do that is for sure. I am only one person but I eat good and can't spend $250 a month!!!! One of my friends from work was really upset one day when her bf stole her food stamp card, until she found out he used it for lobster and a birthday cake for her birthday. What has this world come too? ?

I agre Rick... I knew someone (that I refuse to associate with anymore) who got the food stamps/codependent card and used it to buy beer and crabs.. Nice to know that is what my money is going towards... But I don't know who is worse, her for buying the crabs and beer or the damn merchant who accepted it!

Ummm, you can still get food stamps even if you work.... It is all about your total income and the amount of dependents you have. She also has Florida Healthy Kids (insurance for her kids that allows you to either pay a small amount for it or it is completely free). She works as a receptionist one or two days a week.

I never see these mythical people. In my neighborhood, the big sellers for the food stamp crowd is rice and beans. No worries, they are ahead of ME in the line trying to figure out why it was $9.02 for their basket of groceries. As for mythical - $800 a month in food stamps for 4 (including 2 under 2) is not mythical!!!! <<wondering why you think I am lying about this, as you don't know me at all>>

My mom who is 65 and gets social security also got food stamps - she got $78 per month - without she wouldn't have been able to make it. However, she decided to work at Target to supplement her income. I would gladly make up the difference and allow her to truly retire, but she has too much pride for this - it was a humbling experience to ask for the money from the food stamps program, but she wasn't going to allow me to help her. (Although I have from time to time).

Tough - it is all about priorities. If one needs a cigarette badly then there are some that would give up food for it. However, the program is unrealistic about the amount of food stamps one needs in order to survive a month. I think my point is that it is way too much of an allotment for a family of four. Seriously though, I don't object to the program as it is much better than it used to be, but it sure would be nice to get rid of some of the fraud. www.wftv.com/news/22877202/detail.htmlI cannot repost this store as it is copyrighted, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement busted 15 stores that were giving customers money for their EBT cards. It was a fraud of more than $3.5 million. The FDLE agent specifically said that the food stamps are to be used for food not LOTTO TICKETS, ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND TABACCO. If anyone believes this program is without fraud then you are not realistic about what is happening with it.

And I donate to our local food bank as well. Many are dependent on it here as well. There are so many people that are using it that may not have in the past. There is a whole group of working poor that are dependent on the food banks simply because they cannot make it but don't qualify for the programs either. But for the grace of God I could be in that situation as well. You may believe I am unsympathetic, but truthfully, I believe a lot of people are using the program as designed but those that aren't deserve to be jailed.
