The first thermonuclear bomb was exploded in 1952 at Enewetak by the United States

It scared the living hell out of those present. The designer of the bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer left the site immediately after viewing the effects as shown in your photo. He quit the project shortly thereafter.

The resulting blast was in the 40+ megaton range, far exceeding the expected result.

There's a little moral to this story about setting things up to go boom. It just might be bigger than you think and it may well blow up in your face. Only time will tell ....
