Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) announced today that it was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract by Joule to design and build a renewable fuel production facility in New Mexico. Fluor booked the undisclosed contract value in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The facility is intended to test and scale up a process for the commercial production of liquid fuels via Joule's novel technology, which uses sunlight to convert industrial waste carbon dioxide into liquid hydrocarbons, ethanol or chemical products. There are some really amazing things being developed in the solar world right now involving the products used to make the panels. A plastic solar panel has been successfully created, this will cut the cost to produce panels dramatically. There has also been a technique developed to makes solar cells from plant material, when you consider that plants make energy from light it's not that hard to imagine. While on the topic of Solar power it's important to note that PG&E has the most solar installations of any US utility company, it will be interesting to see if this has a positive effect on earnings going forward. Meanwhile a school in Toronto has installed panels on their roof, and even though Wal-Mart is in trouble in Mexico, they are installing solar panels on top of Metro-Denver stores.

Wal-mart is also working with community groups to cut down on their waste, waste that Waste Management, along with GE, is turning into power. This area of energy production is becoming a very viable option, and WM is proving that by actively seeking partners to develop more technology that will turn waste into power and new materials. Another interesting thing involving both landfills and solar power, the Hickory-Ridge landfill is going to be covered with a tarp, and the tarp is going to be lined with solar panels.

From wind to waste water, there are ways of making power with almost anything, as we continue to move forward and find better ways to work in balance with our environment, I am sure we will wonder how we got buy without things such as: Biodegradable plastics, fuel cell power plants, and floating offshore windfarms. The only issue with all of this renwable enrgy is storage, it's a good thing that GE is on that now as well.

It's clear that big companies are investing in clean energy. These savings in energy will help their bottom lines, especially in places like China where energy is very expensive. The list of big companies that are moving towards generating their own power continues to grow and IBM is fully implementing their smart cites plan. A small community in Brittan has made their own power station and a builder in New Jersey has made their own power company as a way to diversify. Japan has just opened a few solar parks and things like fuel cells, solar cars, and solar planes are starting to take off.

WOOD and 100% Hard wood charcoal make more energy for the world then all other producing systems. We are seeing major reforestations projects throughout the world. Increased wood production will also lower CO2 levels esp. if harvested properly.  Plant three trees for each one cut down: except mesquite.

Great point Bruce. Then instead of just letting the CO2 from the wood fire go, we can capture it and use it.

Algae can produce enough feedstock to completely eliminate the need for conventional oils, in North America anyway. The bonus is that not a single acre of farmland is needed, leaving more capacity for food production.

Neste oil announces off-take agreement with U.S. algae producer

Neste Oil and Renewable Algal Energy, a U.S.-based algae biomass producer, have signed a contingent commercial algae oil off-take agreement. Algae oil is one of the alternatives being researched by Neste Oil for use as a feedstock for producing NEXBTL renewable diesel in the future.

Cooperation with RAE is intended to secure Neste Oil's access to a cost-effective supply of industrial volumes of algae oil in the future. Implementation of the agreement will require RAE to increase its algae oil production capacity and to comply with the requirements of biofuel legislation with strict sustainability criteria in the U.S. and the E.U. throughout the production chain. RAE anticipates that it will be able to produce commercial-scale volumes of algae oil from 2016 onwards.

The agreement between the two companies is non-exclusive and Neste Oil is actively looking for other partners that are aiming to begin commercial algae oil production.

"Algae oil is well suited for producing Neste Oil's renewable products," said Lars Peter Lindfors, senior vice president of technology at Neste Oil. "The agreement we have just signed is yet another step in our constant work to support the commercialization of the algae industry and to take part in research on new, sustainably produced feedstocks."

Well we ha ve been studying DUK with the new storage batteries and the wind cycle in West Texas. Well the wind blows at night when most the auto's are being charged.  If the charging system works as well as the test energy storage there should be enough power to last a day or two from a one day charge .  Also if you RECALL MY BROTHER HAD A TEST RACE USING ONLY SUN LIGHT AS A POWER GENERATION SYSTEM!!!

As far as I'm concerned, if you want to get off mid east oil, you have to love renewables!! Cut off all oil imports - within the next 18 months is my guess. We don't want to lose some of the only high paying jobs that have been created during this first phase of the great long depression.

Keep oil jobs and create alternative energy jobs. We have a stable oil supply, and gas prices would never be under fire again from external forces.

I've said it before and I'll say it a million times more; every dollar spent on climate science trying to prove a theory and nothing more, is just like throwing money out the door!

Berkeley's artificial photosynthesis turns carbon dioxide into future fuel

Working in collaboration with the Department of Energy and the University of California, researchers have developed a system that captures carbon dioxide and turns it into chemicals that can be used to make plastics, drugs and, even better, biofuel.

Put simply, the system is an artificial form of photosynthesis using a series of semiconducting nanowires and genetically engineered E.coli bacteria. Whereas a plant would absorb carbon dioxide and produce sugar and oxygen, this system creates acetate, a building block for various organic compounds.

In terms of its practical applications, the team can already extract promising if not yet useful quantities of each substance. For instance, the process kicks out a 26 percent yield of butanol (biofuel), 25 percent amorphadiene (base component for anti-malaria drugs) and 52 percent amounts of PHB (biodegradeable plastic).

With more time, money, research and some luck, the team hopes to get those figures up to a level where the technology is commercially viable. If the system can be then created on a large enough scale, the carbon in the atmosphere could be captured and converted into a sustainable green gas for your vehicle that wouldn't require pulling more fossil fuels out of the ground.

Woody Biomass Utilization Systems

Woody biomass resources can be utilized in a number of ways; pelletizing, combined heat and power or wood based ethanol are some of the current alternatives.

Understanding the potential of each of these strategies on the economic returns, the logistics, the feedstock requirements and the potential sustainability of these potential systems are the objectives of the Woody Biomass Utilization Education Program.

Sustainable Woody Biomass Production and Harvesting

Pennsylvania’s forests and land resource base has considerable potential for the production of woody biomass for energy.
Economic production of the "low use" wood may increase land values and enhance forest landowner's revenues.
Given long timber growing periods, making money from Penn's Woods is difficult. Harvesting smaller diameter and faster growing species could provide continuous revenue streams for landowners.
Moreover, the ability for landowners to gain more income from their land reduces the likelihood for land conversion to development uses.
Using biomass harvesting as a method for timber stand improvement is a key opportunity associated with woody biomass utilization for energy.

But many factors will affect how much and how effectively this resource can be utilized. Things to consider include:
Understanding the different ways wood resources can be utilized, for example in pellets, in district heat and power projects, or as wood ethanol.

Development of potential resources with minimal impacts on other wood product industries
Understanding the sustainable forestry practices associated with harvesting trees for woody biomass.
Land tenure issues and the economic returns to harvesting are critical consideration.

I was thinking about this as we passed the DUK energy wind farm yesterday on our way to the ranch.  We could run the pipeline and algae on electrify energy: saving $$$$$.  Just think of the government $$$$ we could get from renewable energy, farm and ranch loans and PR with the tree huggers!!  The beans from the trees are very low in Glycemic Index.   It is all about working for 7th generation!!
I found a place where they sell trees for the zero water demand needs.
