Could sewage be the holy grail for clean fuel? The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) in Fountain Valley, Calif., recently opened the world's first tri-generation fuel cell and hydrogen energy station, which uses sewage biogas to produce heat, electricity, and hydrogen. The end result of the system is a constant stream of hydrogen that doesn't require large amounts of electricity to produce.
Sewage waiting to be processed at the OCSD treatment plant produces methane gas. A system designed by FuelCell Energy collects the methane and reformulates it into hydrogen, then sends it to a fuel cell. Electricity from the fuel cell is used to power the facility, and any leftover hydrogen is diverted to a hydrogen fueling station operated by AirPower.

I was reading this study that stated that we are on the way back to cave man status because of the lack of power generation. Of course there was no mention about innovation.

By capturing greenhouse gases from hog waste and burning them to run a turbine, the system produces enough electricity to power 35 homes for a year. It is expected to be able to prevent the release of greenhouse gases equivalent to nearly 5,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, which is like taking 900 cars off the road.

The solar plant from above is also working out very well, how about that, power that is renewable, yeah back to the cave we go!

However, I started the thread with the theme of the first post. So nuclear is also a topic that I would say is a renewable that works. Wind power can be, per BTI , as cost efficient as oil apparently. I have an idea that I am working on that would remove the land from the wind farm. Canada produces 2/3 of our electricity from hydro power, so I am I fan of water generated power. Technology like this will help make it so that all of these energy forms will work together.

They already had an experimental Throium Nuclear reactor operating at Los Alamos since the 1970's, it's shutdown now, but we have successful used the technology in an experimental fashion. There are some hurdles to scale it up to a commercial production size, but doable for far less than the money government wastes on other things. Problem is the fear of nuclear anything. Good luck getting it past the environmentalists. A true leader would be able to do it and value it but we haven't had a true leader in this country for decades.

We are seeing that large companies like google are saying that using solar panels on their roofs is lowering the bottom line. This is great new if your a shareholder as energy costs for large corporations are a big part of their expenses. If there are filling dead space with energy production it will only make these compaines better off in the long run.

As always there is money to be made in any situation and there are lots of power companies putting renewable energy to use in this high priced energy world. Even thought there are EPA regulations that will put extra steps into fossil fuels, there are companies that are going to make money off of the new regulations as well.

The price of solar panels has dropped so far that from Hawaii and India, solar project developers are beginning to match the rates customers pay with traditional power sources. Companies are investing in quick charging stations for electric vehicles and Germany is about to rebuild its energy infrastructure the likes which have not been seen since the end of WW2.

India's biggest power company has said that they are going to favor solar and wind power over traditional source such a s coal because it's just easier to develop. Good to hear. I've been dawdling on having a solar guy out to the house for an estimate. Maybe once I get through 1st quarter close I'll take a day and meet with a couple.

Sounds like a plan to me. There are going to be some really big changes in the way panels are made in the next few years as well. More and more people are getting closer to "high efficiency" panels.
