Beijing's Middle Eastern Dilemma

U.S. threats to launch military strikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, citing new evidence that he has used sarin gas against his own people, have presented Beijing with a fresh dilemma.

For decades, the cardinal principle of Chinese foreign policy has been noninterference in the affairs of sovereign states. In the Middle East, that's led to a series of diplomatic shocks as Chinese foreign-policy mandarins maintain bets on existing regimes, even as their popular support crumbles.

From Moammar Gadhafi, Libya's megalomaniac former strongman, to Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, Chinese leaders have stuck with Middle Eastern despots long after atrocities against their own populations helped doom their regimes.

Regime change under any circumstances—even, in Syria's case, the suspected use of sarin gas—makes Chinese leaders nervous.

Their distaste for toppling strongmen springs partly from a deep sense of insecurity about their own political legitimacy in a country where social unrest is bubbling over everything from pollution to land grabs.

If Western nations can intervene to see off undemocratic governments in the Middle East, Chinese leaders reason, what will stop them from trying to bring down the Chinese Communist government one day?

To be sure, the problems that China faces aren't remotely similar to those afflicting governments in Middle Eastern countries like Egypt. They stem largely from economic growth that arguably has been too rapid and uneven, not too slow. Unlike many countries in the Middle East, China has scored impressive victories in the fight against poverty. Its economy creates abundant jobs and opportunity.

Still, Chinese security forces reacted with overwhelming force on the streets of Beijing two years ago in response to online calls for protests in support of a "Jasmine Revolution" inspired by the "Arab Spring." The demonstrations never took off.

More broadly, for China, turmoil in the Middle East has underlined the reality that there's still only one superpower in today's world—the U.S.

In his book "China Goes Global," David Shambaugh, a China scholar at George Washington University, writes: "Real superpowers shape events and produce outcomes. By contrast, China repeatedly takes a low-key, backseat approach in its diplomacy."

China has no military bases in the Middle East, or troops on the ground. It's likely to be many years before China can project sustained power beyond its own immediate backyard in East Asia, where it's pushing back against U.S. dominance with ballistic missiles and submarines, and by building space and cyberwarfare capabilities.

At the same time, China has growing interests in the Middle East. It has invested heavily in oil fields in Iraq and massive construction projects in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, and its state-owned companies have packed off tens of thousands of Chinese engineers, geologists and workers to support the projects.

Ironically, the Chinese lack of strategic reach in the Middle East is compounded by a challenge that's upending the strategic calculus of the region: While the U.S. is growing less dependent on imported energy, including from the Middle East, China's dependence is growing.

This year, China will overtake the U.S. as the world's largest net oil importer on a monthly basis, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The gap will grow as U.S. production of shale oil and gas ramps up, and energy conservation kicks in. Meanwhile, an industrializing China will gobble up energy at greater speeds, and while China has been scrambling for new supplies in Africa and Latin America, the Middle East remains an essential supplier.

It's increasingly clear that picking the wrong side in that region has been costly for China. It's complicated Beijing's relations with populist governments that have emerged from the turmoil sweeping the Middle East, and it's put at risk the prospects of Chinese energy and engineering companies.

More generally, say Western diplomats and foreign policy analysts, China's instinctive support for the status quo has left it flat-footed as events rapidly unfold. In one crisis after another, China has reacted to initiatives from Washington and other Western powers, despite its aspirations to be seen as a global peer of the U.S.

For instance, China was enraged when its support for limited action by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Libya—a rare instance of the country compromising on its nonintervention principles—turned into an all-out assault on the Gadhafi clan. That may have hardened Beijing's responses on Syria, say diplomats.

Three times, moreover, China has used its veto in the United Nations to block attempts to isolate the Assad regime, even as a civil war that's lasted for more than two years rages across the country. The Chinese have joined the Russians to stymie forceful allied intention.

So far, the latest crisis hasn't left the Chinese as isolated as some past ones have. With the exception of France, no European country has come out unequivocally in favor of military strikes.

Still, the same reflexes are clear. On Monday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said that China "noted" the U.S. evidence, although he didn't evaluate it in any way. "China opposes anyone to use chemical weapons and supports the U.N. to launch an independent, fair, objective and professional investigation," the spokesman, Hong Lei, told a news briefing.

He added that China "always considers political solution as the only realistic solution to the Syria issue. We are deeply concerned that some countries may take military actions unilaterally."

Last week, the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party, accused unnamed foreign countries of "making a big fuss" about chemical attacks to soften up their citizens for military intervention in Syria. The nationalist-leaning Global Times newspaper accused America of jumping into war and acting as "hastily as tapping a walnut."

The official Xinhua news agency said U.S. President Barack Obama's obsession with military options "will lead America astray."

As the Obama administration tries to drum up congressional support for a strike on Syria, China has grown powerful enough for the U.S. to pay attention to such concerns—but not so strong that it can affect the outcome.

China, writes Mr. Shambaugh, "does not shape international diplomacy, drive other nations' policies, forge global consensus, or solve problems."

Amos Gilad: Strong Arab Sunni bloc doesn't see Israel as enemy

A powerful Middle Eastern axis of Sunni states has taken form in the region, which “does not view Israel as a sworn enemy” and has successfully kept extremist jihadi terrorism at bay, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad said on Sunday.

Speaking before the Institute for Counter-Terrorism’s international summit in Herzliya, Gilad, who is director of the Political-Military Affairs Bureau at the Defense Ministry, said that Israel “won’t ever be accepted as a formal member” of the Sunni axis, but that the states that make it up all view the US as the sole superpower and that their regional policies are indirectly beneficial for Israel.

What's amazing to me is that just because the US isn't attacking Syria chemical weapons, the crisis is "averted". Some have gone as far as to say that no known current events will effect the market....

It would be interesting for the observers that al Qaeda’s raison d’état as declared by Osama bin Laden was to fight against the presence of foreign forces on the Holy Land after the first Gulf War. He vowed to expel them through use of force. Before he could act as promised, he himself was expelled from Saudi Arabia to Sudan from where he proceeded to Taliban-led Afghanistan. The Abdullah Azzam Brigade launched a rocket attack against Israel on August 22. Initially, Israel thought this was yet another Hezbollah attack. It turned out that this new terror group was responsible. The Abdullah Azzam Brigade was founded by Saleh bin Abdallah al-Qarawi, a Saudi-Arabian operative of al-Qaida. He fought in Iraq, and was badly wounded by an American missile in Afghanistan. Though no longer a fighter, he is still stirring up serious interference by forming cells close to Israel.

The group is named after a Palestinian Arab, Abdullah Yusef Azzam, who was assassinated in Pakistan in 1989, but whose ideology was adopted by Osama bin Laden

Europe is definitely Watching the Middle East Implode very closely. What makes me think this is Greece is launching inquiry into claims Golden Dawn trained by armed forces. Greek President Karolos Papoulias actually went as far as warning "that 'a storm is approaching'". Also Southern Swiss voters back ban on full-face veils.

Lots have probably heard that US-Somalia's were part of the attack in Kenya, however, the problem for the Muslim community in the US is going to be Al Qaeda calls for attacks inside United States

I wish Russia luck securing those Chemical weapons,especially because the Jihadists set up attacks in Russia. The other problem Syria has now, Syrian defector says Assad has ordered the use of chemical weapons 34 times, transferred stock to Hezbollah.

China’s inscrutability in the Middle East

Don’t mistake China’s rhetoric for reality. In fact, China’s relationships with Syria and the PLO aren’t what they used to be. The reason is that China’s relationship with the State of Israel isn’t what it used to be. In the mere 20 years since China and Israel established diplomatic relations, ancient ties between the nations of China and Israel have strengthened to an unprecedented degree.

Unbeknownst to many people, the history of the Jews in China is both long and friendly. When Marco Polo “discovered” China, he found that the Jews were already very well established there and quite prosperous. In the 20th century, China proved to be a hospitable sanctuary for the Jewish people escaping the Russian Revolution and the Holocaust. We even have a Chinese Oskar Schindler in Dr. Ho Feng-Shan, China’s consul-general in Vienna, who saved the lives of thousands of Jews.

In fact, in consideration of the centuries of peaceful contact between the two peoples, a case can be made that China has been the single most hospitable country to the Jewish people over a long period.

Syria war spills on to local streets

SYRIA'S two-year-old civil war is spilling on to the streets of Sydney and Melbourne, with advocates on both sides claiming violence and persecution are commonplace.

Sonya El-Abbas, a Melbourne-based nurse who has twice visited Syria to assist in humanitarian relief efforts, said her husband's car had been firebombed and the family home attacked.

"Basically, they tried to burn it while we were in Syria and prior to that they tried to shoot at us at our home," Ms El-Abbas said. "We were copping it big time."

Ms El-Abbas, whose brother Robert was killed in the conflict last year, said her husband's car displayed the emblem of the Free Syrian Army, with whom she had worked during her trips to Syria.

Same to you b! God bless. I have some interesting stories I will get posted over the weekend here. The catch 22 that Europe is now in over this whole situation will become the next big news story. Then of course it will be how this current peace deal they are working on was a nothing but a pipe dream.

With the consistent bombings of Aleppo, it's hard to imagine that there will be much left of the city in the near future. Damascus isn't far behind. I'm sure that most have heard the unsettling news that over 130k people have now died in the violence, unfortunately that ins't the development in this story that is most concerning. In the last month alone there have been at least 6 bombings in Lebanon, one of which killed a Lebanese ex-minister who opposed Assad. The situation in Lebanon has escalated to a level that Saudi Arabia has pledged the historic amount of three billion dollars to the Lebanese army.

Over the last two weeks there has been escalating gun fire and missile strikes between Hamas and Israel on the Gaza strip border, the latest being this morning. Israel has repeated time and again that if they feel threatened they won't hesitate to act first. With the entire region surrounding them going up in flames its hard to image at this point they are going to take very much more from the Gaza strip. Especially because they have the full support of the new Govt in Egypt who has just just thwarted an attack in Northern Sinai, and who basically deems all Islamic groups terrorist.

A former chief scientist of the U.S. Department of Transportation, S. Fred Singer, wrote in the Dec 15th copy of the Washington Times that if Iran does not uphold the Geneva Interim Accord, Israel would attack Iranian nuclear facilities. To say the situation in Iran is sensitive would be an understatement, and the fact of the matter is that if there is anything but positive news out of Iran this year, the entire regions big players aside from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the UAE will be engulfed in war by 2015.

Unfortunately, all that happened in the Middle East in 2013, basically, was the escalation of this holy war. The damage has become so extensive and far reaching that the effects are starting to spill over in to Russia, as was just demonstrated by the twin bombings in Volgograd, and China, as mentioned in the Asian crisis thread. However, as I mentioned above the spillover has really started to touch Europe. There have been some unsettling, but when you consider Europe's history, not surprising, political developments over the past month that look to continue into 2014..

As I have mentioned more than a few times in the past, this "situation" in the Middle East is actually an extension of something that happened about 2000 years ago. This holy war is coming to a head and regardless of how hard people try to bury the truth, it will come out because us humans are not in control. The media is now starting to pick up on these historical questions and are starting to print stories based on our distance past.

There hasn't been a time since the Middle Ages that there was this wide of a conflict across the MENA region.  While some of the arguments are the same, because of Zionism, China, and the USA, the outcome will be entirely different. Every single religion, creed, and country that spans the globe is engaged in one form or another, and like I have been posting since 2010, and saying for much longer, the Wahhabist's have made all of them mad.

This "peace conference" with the Syrian rebels is a joke. Why? The Wahhabist. I was watching PBS news about a week ago and a military analyst said that it's time to recognize that it's no longer a civil war in any one country, it's an all out war along sectarian lines that is engulfed the whole region.

The thing that analyst didn't get was that it's worse than that. The Wahabbist are creating a vacuum in the Northern Caucus and the problem there is that's directly linked with the area of China that is experiencing escalating religious tensions.

China can only stay out of the fight for so long, this will also be a first time since the middle ages that this has happened. Not since the Huns have Asian people fought battles in the Middle East.  The real bad news for China in all of this is that MENA was supposed to be an emerging market and the Wahhabist are going to start attacking oil facilities this year more than likely. Just like any situation there is a good and bad. More NA oil production for export! More jobs here, which means that we can continue to kill the welfare state.

The Chinese will have to accelerate their domestic consumption plan because of the vacuum in the Mid East and protest due to smog and other pressing social issues. They will also have to accelerate domestic consumption because MENA was to become a main export market for China now that the west is starting to manufacture more at home.

Bottom line, the war in the Mid East has basically become uncontrollable and it's going to take a very big stick to put it out. The "invisible hand that guides" started this war many years ago so that we would use our freewill for the gift that it is. The mess left behind is not going to be pretty. However, as I have stated since I first started posting(because I initially came up with my theory in about 03-04).  All the big players agree, LOVE not war makes MORE.  This is now clearly demonstrated by China's policy of happiness over GDP.

The campaign is drawing support from beyond northern Europe. Romania has forbidden its citizens from working for companies in the West Bank. More churches are backing BDS. An American academic association is boycotting Israeli lecturers.....

Anxious to hold on to their markets, Israel’s businessmen are increasingly backing the peace camp. The names on a recent advertising campaign in its favour included such luminaries as the head of Google in Israel. Hitherto they had usually preferred to stay out of politics.

According to Fars, Iran had first warned the US of its plans to deploy its naval forces along US marine borders “in the next few years” in September 2012.

Then, Iran’s Navy Commander R.-Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said the move would counter US presence in its waters in the Persian Gulf.

Fars first reported on an Iranian Navy fleet of warships making its way across the Atlantic Ocean in January 2014. At the time, they reported that the ships would sail for at least three months.

Hours earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the United States would overthrow the Iranian government if it could, adding Washington had a “controlling and meddlesome” attitude towards the Islamic Republic, Iranian media reported.

The question of the hour now of course is, what is going to happen in Syria now that the peace talks have failed? Last year Assad was quoted saying Assad: ‘I will win, even if Damascus is destroyed’. At the end of January is was reveiled that Syrian regime destroyed districts in Damascus, Homs to punish civilians.

Im sure most have heard that Assad's close allies in Iran have started their nuclear talks with the west again. IMO, the bigger story right now lies in the fact that Pakistan, Saudi Arabia decide to carry out joint defense ventures. The reasons it's a bigger story, as I have mentioned before Saudi Arabia has already talked about acquiring nukes from Pakistan, The Saudis are now going to Arm Syrian Rebels With Anti-Aircraft Weapons, and Iran 'may send forces to Pakistan' after capture of guards. But those aren't the only reasons the Saudi, Pakistan story than the Iranian nuclear talks. The other big one is how Syrian war is crossing into Lebanon, bringing with it Al-Qaida style jihad

In other words, Assad and his allies in Iran are being spread out and worn thin by pockets all around them. It would seem the stage has been set for the next act. Stay .

Al Qaeda-linked group claims Beirut bombings

The radical Lebanese group, which claimed the attack on its Twitter account, also said it was responsible for a November 19 attack on the Iranian embassy that killed 23 people, using the same tactic of twin suicide bombs. In both cases, most of the victims were civilians.

Hezbollah is a powerful Shi'ite Muslim political and militant group in Lebanon that is funded by Iran. The group has sent hundreds of fighters to neighboring Syria, giving a boost to its ally President Bashar al-Assad against mainly Sunni rebels seeking to topple him.

"We will continue - through the grace of God and his strength - to target Iran and its party in Lebanon (Hezbollah) in all of their security, political and military centers to achieve our two demands: One, the exit of all fighters from the Party of Iran in Syria. Two, the release of all our prisoners from oppressive Lebanese prisons," the statement said.
