But don't you want to be more informed about every aspect of your life? I know I do. I actually do spend a fair amount of time looking up things to get more understanding. For example, I'm always looking up etymologies. In fact, my home page on my cell phones web browser is www.etymonline.com/ (I have a tendency to wonder about words while traveling...if I'm driving, I get Hubby to look it up for me). I even keep a little notebook on had to jot down things I would like to know (e.g. how marsupials made their way from China to Australia or the history of the letter "W" in English). I guess I could be wasting time on Facebook or watching TV or getting a mani/pedi, instead... I do permit myself to have some mental down time, though, which is why I visit this board. Mmm, OK, did you just call us dumb? LOL, I'd rather be dumb and fun than...well, than a person that thinks looking up words is a hoot

How about fun and smart and well groomed? I think I've got all 3 going for me. OK, my nails are a mess, but other than that, I'm good. I mean, I dont' know how marsupials made it from China to Australia, but I'm really good at researching should I need to know.

how marsupials made their way from China to Australia Well for land mammals they were already there when the contients were all one land mass called Pangea. When the contients broke apart the animals that could not fly or swim were stranded on what is now Australia. The animals left in Australia evolved to meet the climate and conditions of Australia while those in China evolved to meet the evolutionary demands of China. That is know as Divergent Evolution. And I will admit I had to look it up because I got it confused with Convergent evolution which is two totally different things. Wow, did I just prove I was a nerd or what?

So RJ...you are a mechanic right? So tell me what is wrong with my car. So on the way home this light came on....It looked kind of like a gas pump I think? Well when I pulled into my driveway it started to sputter and then it stalled out. Do you think I should take it into the dealership to see what is wrong with it? Or is this something I could get my guy neighbor to fix easily?

Here's some more marsupial reading: articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/28/science/la-sci-marsupial-20100728. And Wikipedia also has a good entry, though, as we've determined before on YM, it's not a source that can always be taken seriously.

Mmm, OK, did you just call us dumb? LOL, I'd rather be dumb and fun than...well, than a person that thinks looking up words is a hoot I'd rather be smart, in all honesty. Yeah, I look up words. I mean, we're bombarded with words. We use them all the time, verbally and through writing. It's absolutely amazing that I can have a thought--an ethereal, incorporeal experience-- in my head and be able to convey that thought across the physical void between you and me and you can experience it the same as I do (more or less)! Words aren't spark plugs; they're there in front of us all the time. How can one not wonder about them?

Actually, I am supposed to go get my roots touched up at 4 or 5 weeks, but I just ignore it until the 8 week mark. But, I do usually color it so close to my natural color that the roots aren't completely horrible (If I squint and don't look directly at them then I can pretend that they are not noticeable.) I just know it is really expensive to get my hair done so I only do it 8-10 weeks. DH doesn't complain about the cost, but I just feel guilty. I don't have to color yet (and I will once the need arises) but my mom actually does it herself every other color. She'll use the box to touch up between colors so that she can go 8-10 or so weeks before paying the professional. Just a thought if it'll help you feel less guilty!

I cant understand why anyone would not want to dissect and engine or Transmission. I mean Geeeze they are right there, you rely on them everyday and its the most interesting thing to see how it works.

Words aren't spark plugs; they're there in front of us all the time. How can one not wonder about them? This is a completely different and separate statement from the one where you implied that if someone doesn't read the car's owner's manual from cover to cover then they are ignorant and uninformed. They're not really separate statements. Both statements centered around the idea that there are things (e.g. cars and words) that we use and rely on all the time; given their importance to us, how could we not be curious about them? And for those things that are vitally important to our lives--our cars transport ourselves and our kids, and can be DEADLY if used/maintained improperly--isn't it pragmatic and responsible to have even a cursory understanding of how they operate and what needs to be done to maintain their proper operation?

Just to put this out there. Opossums are marsupials also and they are all over the western hemisphere. Just saying. I used to work for a car dealership and I had to read them for my job and I didn't' want to do it. I read them now on an as needed basis only. I had to replace my tires and brakes this summer. It was on a 12 year old car with 200K on it. The fact that I had to spend almost $900 bucks on it really chapped my ass, and still does!

How nerdy does it make me that I thought "when Pangea split" right after I read the question?
