Now I"m wondering what kind of maintenance I never had done that I was supposed to. I am fanatic about rotating my tires and getting the oil changed...other than that, if it breaks I fix it. My Grand Jeep Cherokee has about 86K miles (it's a 2004)...I dont' remember having anything done to it....hmmmm.....

Read the manual, it does help but also remember that it is designed to make you get a lot of maintenance.

Oh I have no problem getting the repairs/maintenance done. Like I mentioned above, I always get my oil changed when they tell me to. I get my fluids changed when they tell me to. I follow the maintenance schedule that they printed out for me, and I never saw the timing belt on there. I would have done it at 100K if I would have seen it and known. Yes, it is an expensive maintenance, but I also plan on driving this car for a couple more years. I will keep it until it dies...or if I get a really good full time job I will probably trade it in. Is your owner's manual not in your car? There are often two parts to it. One part will have a complete maintenance schedule. If you don't have it in the glove compartment in your car, you'll still be able to find it online. Spark plugs last anywhere from 60K to 100K miles (usually closer to 60K, though, unless you get the platinum-tipped long-life ones and those cap out at 100K). Even before the misfiring happened, you probably should have noticed decreased fuel efficiency that should have tipped you off. No, the maintenance is not expensive. It's no more expensive than most cars. It's just part of the cost of having any car.

But I don't know too many people that actually reads their entire car manual. They told me when everything else needed to be done verbally, but no one mentioned the timing belt until this past Monday. Hubby and I both read them. In fact, I can't imagining NOT reading the owner's manual. Here's a handy rule of thumb: Expect "big" maintenance at 60K, 80K, 100K, etc. (check your manual for the specific increments). They're often in 20,000 intervals for the stuff that goes beyond oil changes, and 50K or 60K for super big-ticket items.

Other than that, when a light comes on or it starts driving weird it goes to the dealership.

I am sorry, but I don't know too many people who think that $1400 all at once on maintenance is chump change. Yes I had cash to pay for it, but I still don't like having to pay that much money all at once. Yes, my manual IS in my car, but I don't feel the need to read it. I know how to work a car. I don't need to read the manual. Maybe YOU like to read that kind of stuff, but I have better things to do than read my car manual. I bet I could do a poll on here and there would be more people that DON'T read their car manuals than do. I read it only when I absolutely need to (like when my engine light came on. I looked it up to see what it means). Ya know I think it is great that you know so much about your car and you read your manual and have a monthly budget set up to put "maintenance" money in. That is fabulous. It isn't me though. I really don't give a rats patootie what makes my car go, or when my spark plugs need to be changed. I do it when the Honda guys tell me it is time. FYI the "maintenance has been done. It has been paid for IN CASH, why do you feel the need to keep harping on me about what I did wrong and that I should do this and that and crap? This isn't YM. And in all actuality, the OP was more just crying because I have to "maintain" a minivan that I don't look HAWT in. So can you stop giving me the "lecture" already?

Hey I just posted a warning on FB that I am being a snarky bitch so that we don't have to bare claws again Thanks for starting the poll. It is too early in the morning for me to read the "instructions" on how to do that and I wasn't in the mood for another lecture. I have had 1/2 cup of coffee and not fully awake yet.

Nah, I just really don't like to be lectured about shit. I am all for helpful advice, but to keep lecturing me about what is normal maintenance and that I should be budgeting for that stuff and that $1400 isn't expensive and blah blah blah...yeah...it chaps my ass a bit. I don't hang out on YM much for a reason. The lectures make my eyes twitch. I know you mean well KK but the tone is just coming off as you lecturing me.

I just find it dumbfounding that people can spend hundreds of dollars getting their hair done every 4-6 weeks, but can't bother to flip through the manual that comes with the second most expensive item they own. How is remembering to change the spark plugs every 60K miles harder than remembering to touch up your roots the first Saturday of every month? And, worse, to rely on a man to do it for me??? No fucking way.

And I find it dumbfounding that the fact that people with no interest in the mechanics of car engines don't read the damn manual is a surprise to you. I don't read the manual for any of the appliances I buy either. I don't generally find myself drawn to sit down and read shit that I have no interest in. How shocking!! My stuff keeps working until there's a problem and then I get someone to fix it. And the place I take my car for oil changes or inspections will let me know if it's time to do other work on it. Or my sweetie will.
What exactly is your issue here? The car needed maintenance. Said maintenance was done. The OP was understandably distraught over parting with $1400 of hard-earned money, but did it because it was needed. I don't really see the need to persecute her for wishing she could have parted with her money over something a little more fun.

I simply don't understand the lack of concern for taking care of expensive items. I don't enjoy reading owner's manuals, but I do it because it seems like the responsible thing to do. I like being informed. I don't like being ignorant. That's why I read 'em.

"I like being informed. I don't like being ignorant. That's why I read 'em."
One cannot be informed about every single aspect of life. That's why there are paid professionals. The logic about being ignorant could be applied to anything. I don't have time to know all the facts in the world. I do what I can in between all of the other shit that I really have to do. Reading an owner's manual is on the bottom of the list.
And you didn't answer....what is your issue? The car needed maintenance. It got done. Why are you mad that she didn't read the manual before doing the maintenance? End result is the same.

For example, I'm always looking up etymologies. In fact, my home page on my cell phones web browser is www.etymonline.com/ (I have a tendency to wonder about words while traveling...if I'm driving, I get Hubby to look it up for me). I even keep a little notebook on had to jot down things I would like to know (e.g. how marsupials made their way from China to Australia or the history of the letter "W" in English). I guess I could be wasting time on Facebook or watching TV or getting a mani/pedi, instead... I do permit myself to have some mental down time, though, which is why I visit this board.

Angel, I'm starting the poll on reading the owner's manual You know how to start a poll??? I'm so impressed because you are so pretty! I would refer to the manual only to prove DH wrong. Otherwise I expect him to know how to do these things. But it's me who nags him to take my car in to get everything done except the oil change. He'll take it in for that. Angel, we recently had fluids flushed out and changed, belts replaced, locks replaced, tires balanced and rotated, etc. and it was about $1,100.00 My car hasn't required maintenance in years other than the little things and it's paid off so I was okay with that. Not happy, but okay with it.

No. I am well informed about some things that interest me. There are some things that interest me that I would like to be more informed about. And then there are things that are of no interest to me, that I have no desire to become more informed about. Chief among those things are your interest in etymologies or the bizarre observation that you "allow" yourself mental downtime. Now I am far too well-informed about you.

If we both filled our heads with all of both categories I think our heads would explode. We would forget most of it any way because we'd be on info. overload and only remember bits and pieces. The way Angel does it, is how we do it and it just happens to work for us. If I didn't have a partner I would still only read boring manuals on a need to read basis.

POM, your post reminded me: I had to have similar work done on my Protege. Hated to spend the money, but I've always said that whatever maintenance is cheaper than car payments, I would certainly do. A few weeks after the work, I got hit by another car. The Protege went to the big donation box in the sky (I did actually donate it to my local public radio station). I did vote in the poll, and I won't say which way. I will say this: I look at knowing the manual the same way as I do knowing my appliance manuals and knowing the fine print on my investments. Irregardless of price, it's my stuff, not DH's stuff. My name is on the bottom line of those items, and if something happens to him, my life has to go on with some measure of sanity. I may not be able to do the repairs or investments, but I need to know who I can turn to for help. I say this of course, from the point of view of someone with no kids or aged familiy members in the house to care for. My lifestyle does afford the time to take those manuals to bed for a little late-night reading.
