Maybe for Christmas Virgil could whip you up one that's Red with White fur trim around the hood - or just plain Red. Rovo would look like the Hogfather, er, when Death was filling in.

In rare cases, pets will perform intentionally selfless or self-sacrificing acts. ------------------- My rats used to bring me their own food when I was sick. They would pile it up near my head when I was dying on the couch. I had to pretend to eat some of it, or they wouldn't stop staring at me, and forcing me to eat by sheer will. Awww, that's so sweet! I didn't know they could become so attached. I hope hope to get a cute little gerbil or something when my son gets a little older... ;D ETA: Glad you're all better, sorry you were so sick.

I love my dogs. I have loved every pet I have ever owned. When I was a child, I cried more when our GSD died than when my grandmother did. And still, no matter how much I love them, no matter how much they have done for me, I have never considered one of my pets my best friend. Both with the GSD I grew up with and the Aussie DH and I had, intelligence was probably approaching the toddler level, but there's still not a lot of room for give and take. It is much more like a parent-infant/toddler relationship. My best friends have always been people who provided me with what I needed when I needed it and were able to take what they needed from me when they needed it. There have been fights and estrangements, and yet, no matter what, we still come back to our friendships. That takes two people operating on an equal level.
However, given that I run in "odder" circles in RL than I come across on EE, I've known more than the average share of people suffering from Autism Spectrum disorders, depression, and other functional issues, that make dealing with people very difficult and stressful for them. In those cases, as Virgil mentioned, pets have been their best friend because they can project exactly what they need on the animal and the animal does not ask anything of them that they can't give.
