visiting my parents this weekend and trying to catch up on my NaNo novel now that they're in bed. Tomorrow we're taking a car tour and then I'll head home. Trying to keep up with five dogs is certainly a chore, there's always someone running around underfoot. And my parents are visiting me next weekend. Today is a CSD, I picked up coffee for my mom but used cash

Secret Santa info - Nothing scented please My walls are strangely bare, so I'd be stupid happy with picture frames or random pieces of art. Even a crayon drawing to go on my fridge would be awesome. If you'd rather go the gift card route, Kohls, KMart, Target, Fred Meyers (Kroger), or a gift certificate to Good Will would be great. If you're a creative type and want to make me something, my color schemes are: Black and white (bedroom), bright teal and purple (bathroom and guest room), and brown/deep teal/burnt orange/mustard yellow/light blue random mid-century awesomeness in the living room and kitchen. Remember my plates? And awesome fridge magnets? those are the colors. My counters are orange, the carpet is deep teal, and mustard is an accent color I'm using very, very sparingly. I love irises and tulips (not allergic to them, hooray!).

The only colors I don't like are orange, gold, beige and some greens. I like fire trucks, bears, music and cooking the best.
I apparently also really like DM since she will be my new roomie at the first of the year. (DB will be out of the pic)

I usually try to do my QOTW and COTW as a round up for the month, but with December approaching at the end of this week, have decided to do a continuation of last week's questions as a round up for the year. I also kind of felt inspired as I am preparing to make room for the rest of my stuff, DM and her stuff and as we clean out DGMs house.
QOTW: Start setting goals- financially and personally for 2012. Make sure that they are not so lofty that you set yourself up for failure, or so simple that you have given yourself a free pass. Have your list ready to go for New Year's.
COTW: What are your top 5 goals for 2012 and are they attainable, reasonable goals? Why or why not? If not- what can you do to make them attainable and reasonable?

COTW: My top 5 goals for this year:
1. Lose this weight! Attainable and reasonable yes. I will definitely have to work at it though.
2. Run the Hospice 5K (not walk) in November. Reasonable, yes. Attainable will depend on my ankle. Nothing I can do to change a bad ankle. If I find out tomorrow there is another big problem and not just a sprain, I will have it fixed ASAP.
3. Finish my MT courses. Reasonable and attainable.
4. Get my business off the ground and running smoothly. Reasonable. I am working on my business model with my exec to make it attainable.
5. Race down debts as much as possible. (Car, tuition) Reasonable and attainable.

Grrrrrrrrr! I am really ticked off right now. I just walked through the kitchen to find the trash can tipped over. This hasn't happened in forever. Thank goodness there was nothing wet or messy in there. The reason I am ticked us that I will soon have to sift through everything piece by piece, when I calm down. ( I know the culprit is not Onyx, she has been in my lap helping on the computer or keeping my feet warm since I was last in the kitchen.) Last Wednesday night as I was getting ready for bed I watched Calleigh playing with the tear strip from a box top, until I realized it was not the right color for a tear strip. I examined it closer and let out a shriek and grabbed a very long pair of tongs take a dead SNAKE away from her. True it was only a small garden snake, and only half a snake, as big as my thumb and about six inches long. Anyway, I tossed it out and, eventually, went to sleep. Fast forward to Friday night when I called the cats in. It was dark and it has been cold enough that I had stopped checking her mouth for "livestock." Some how she found and smuggled the dead snake inside. Once again i found her playing with it, since it was icy and snowing I buried the snake deep in the trash can. Now my trash was just some empty cans and boxes and I was not in a rush to take the trash out in the ice and snow. I should have. When I was cleaning up I realized I hadn't seen the snake, now I have to sort though it piece by piece in hopes of finding a half of a dead snake. Such fun. I hate to think where she might have hidden it if I don't find it.
I'll be back when i am more sociable.
PS excellent challenge, Mizbear! PPS Reenee, I'm kind of glad to hear you won't be pushing college until Fall. More time to get things set up and less stress.

ses - yuck gross - bad kitty! hope you find it
secret santa - some ideas: home/hand made anything is great, i love dark chocolate, lined blank books, blue pens (fine or extra fine), sample sized lotions/potions/etc, lipsticks, x-mas decorations featuring penguins, starbucks x-mas blend (but not the VIA instant stuff), pierced earrings - small studs, interesting but not to heavy necklaces over 18 inches - silver if metal, a new job

We laid pretty low all weekend. Had Turkey Day at my Dsis with her DH and their two kids. Was super peaceful and fun. Lots of laughing and visiting with a side of turkey and stuffing On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being maxed out CC's and 10 being didn't leave the house) we ended Black Friday weekend at about an 8. Got a great deal on some Fiestaware (my dishes) silverware so I splurged on that but otherwise everything else was budgeted for, planned for and on my list. Bought DH some jeans and long sleeved shirts and some extension cords for the outdoor lights and that my friends was all she wrote. Midwestern: Sending good thoughts your way. Keep us posted. secret santa: I am super easy going. My house is pretty much every color under the sun so not picky color wise. No allergies but I don't drink coffee so nothing coffee related please. Otherwise I am open to anything. Can someone remind me please what the $ limit is for the secret santa?

Reenee- I echo everyone else's thoughts on college and your cousin as a roomie. I have one thing to say about snakes- ewwww. I am super sick and at a really bad time. I had to get someone else to do my bazaar for me this weekend coming up, may have to skip my CPR/first aid class- and still have everything to get done by the first- did I mention my laundry is starting to take over and I have broken my big crock pot? DM says not to worry about the crockpot- she will get me 2 new ones- a 1 1/2-2 qt for cooking for her and I (the kind you can use as a crockpot, steamer, rice cooker- she saw them on sale- and then a 3-4 qt for chili cook offs. The only thing nice about my big 7 qt was I could put a small turkey in it . I have this lovely list written out of what needs to be done and what order to do it in to get it done the most efficiently and feel like carp if I am not laying down- this sucks. I see a good year ahead for all of us. This year has just had too much bad news for all of us. It has to get better.

Update: 11 NS + 14 CS = 25 of 26 One more NS and I will have met my original goal of 12 NS + 14 CS. It will most likely have to be Wednesday, though, as we need to grocery shop tonight (I refused to enter any store this weekend) and I have a dentist appt on Tuesday. Also, through my work I can buy a copy of MS Office Professional Plus for $10. I think I'll be purchasing that today.
Glad everyone had a decent holiday. Our new turkey "fryer" worked out great, though the turkey wasn't anything like fried. It was like the best oven roasted bird ever, and that was with no work what so ever, so it's definitely a keeper. DH really wants to try cooking ribs in it.
Honey: *hugs*
secret santa: nothing scented (DH has major sinus issues), love books, dogs, chocolate, jewelry, anything homemade. .

dakota - Ours is just called "our groceries" but I think there are a few different ones out there. I love it because it syncs between blue and my phones. Not sure if it's on iPhone.
I bought blue's iPad on Thanksgiving online. $45 off. I'll take it! Went with the smaller one on the advice of my brother. So I can blame him lol.
QOTW: The usual: pay down debt, save enough for Alaskan cruise, continue to refine our budget and spending, lose weight, then get knocked up. you know, like you do.
COTW: 1. Put in new fence and replace central AC unit with CASH.Attainability depends on freelance work consistency. 2. Somehow save enough for the six weddings we're already attending and/or in. See above re: attainability. 3. Pay down some debt. I'm not unrealistic and I know with our spending next year it might be minimal. But I want that number to keep going DOWN. Very attainable. 4. Drop 15 pounds by March 1. If I actually try, and work out, then yes, I can do this. My mom and I are challenging each other. Doing okay today on Day 1. lol. 5. Get pregnant. I hope this is attainable. As far as what I can do to make them attainable, use your imaginations. lol.
ses - ewwww. so glad my cats are indoor cats. good luck!
Blue made this heavenly pumpkin soup for Thanksgiving. It was definitely the hit of the night. He's so modest about stuff it was cute to see him get shy. But he was proud of himself. As was I. Can't wait for some leftovers tonight!
My cousin, on the other hand, drove everyone up the wall talking about her new eating plan and how it's changed her and her DH's life. We get it. We just don't want to do it. Back off. Ack!
Friday my parents and blue and I got drunk on wine after dinner, which was awesome and hilarious. Saw the Muppet Movie, ate lunch with another friend, bought some Christmas decorations. Came home yesterday and did some Christmas decorating. Not the tree until next week, though. With four house guests coming next weekend we need all our space. Love the holidays!!

Thanks Red. I downloaded one called grocery IQ that another friend recommended. You can make different lists for different stores and have a main list feed into the store specific list. I just like that if I think of something on the fly I can put it on the list then and if I don't find something I don't have to remember to put it on the new list when I get home. If DH had a smartphone it would sync, but since his phone is from the 90's it isn't going to happen. My parents both decided to get iPhones this weekend as well. That should be interesting. So far I think my favorite app Key Ring. You can scan all your loyalty cards in and just pull them up at the register. Some stores can scan them off the phone others have to manually enter it. But I'm hoping that most can scan so I don't have to carry around the real cards anymore.
SES- That makes my skin crawl.
I'll have to give some thought to QOTW/COTW.
Secret Santa Ideas- I like Dark Chocolate, Candles (no baking scents, please), homemade anything, green is my favorite color, my kitchen is accented with pigs (yes I know I'm strange). I collect Christmas ornaments from places, so one from your area would be cool. I'm not a coffee drinker, but do like decaf herbal teas. (No mugs though they are coming out my ears).

Well I unknowingly kicked off 3 weekends of travel. I spent Saturday and Sunday with my parents at their house and on a car tour. Successfully avoided my brother most of the time (he drove a separate car) which was good for my blood pressure because it turns out he followed my mom around snarking about me the whole time. Sigh. And we're HOW old? I'm reminded of Sheila's not so dear bro and know mine may never grow out of his immaturity.
Next weekend Mom and Dad are coming here to trim a tree branch for me (it's lying on the neighbor's roof) and cut down the backyard tree which is so so dead. We'll probably do some other stuff around the house, and I have a handful of sewing projects for my Mom since she keeps a sewing machine here for that purpose.
Weekend after that I'll be in San Francisco to meet up with a colleague and clients. Whew. Hopefully then I'll be home for the rest of the month.
I'm working on tallying up all my NSD, I'll have lots of CSD thanks to my trip to the East Coast and hanging out with Honeylioness.

Happy Monday all -- I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
SES -- Wow. Just wow.
reenee -- I was in Michaels a couple of times over the weekend. The stores were crowded, but they did move. I do agree about not having little ones in stores that are not particularly kid friendly. I went into the American Girl store one Sunday and was overwhelmed. I quickly left. I'm glad you are waiting until the Fall semester.
mizbear -- hope you are feeling better.
moneysquirrel -- I hope you are feeling better. My sinuses were draining all weekend. My bed for the Master Bedroom will be delivered on Wednesday. I keep debating if I want a chair for a corner in my room and I think I do, so I'll have to shop for that and move some things around some more. I have to go back to Ritz Camera to develop another print for the my wall. For the Master Bedroom, I want one wall to have B/W pictures of places I've traveled. I have the Pyramids, an Alaskan Glacier and a building in Singapore. The decorating has expanded to other rooms in the house. The small bedroom that I refer to as my Zen room is almost decorated tooI have developed pictures of a building in Vietnam, The Great Wall and the Hong Kong Skyline. I have other pictures from Asia that will go on another wall, once I decide just what I want to do. And, I'm searching for a mirror and bar stool for my dining room. Whew.
spruby -- I hope you were able to enjoy the 72-degree weather we had yesterday. Oh, it doesn't get any better than that for late November.
3cats -- good to see you!
Goals for 2012: 1. 15% pre-tax to Retirement. 2. Take a photography class to learn how to use my new camera. 3. Walk in the Army 10-miler in October. All of these are reasonable and attainable. I was informed about a photography class by a friend of a friend today. I know the school, I just have to do the research to get the details. I'll think about 2 more goals.

26/30 NDS
I FOUND IT!!!!
Using my extra long tongs I went through every single item, almost to the bottom of the trash, until I found the dead half a of snake. The entire time I was trying to imagine all the places she could have hidden it. While I was searching the trash, both cats were sitting outside the deck door with noses pressed to the glass. I don't even want to think about what they were thinking.
Secret Santa--As you all know I love my kitties and all things cat, I am a tea drinker (with many mugs on hand), I am a big reader, and I am a big proponent of handcrafted items. One of my all time favorite gifts was a box of recipe cards with some of the givers best recipes already copied out on them. Sheila--In the past we set a $10 limit (we tried $5 and found it too difficult)
Mizbear and Moneysquirrel (and anyone else not up to par) take care of yourselves and get better pronto quick. This is not the time to be sick.
These last few challenges have been super! I am still thinking about my top five goals.

ses- You might want to see if you can get someone to put something kitty friendly down to repel snakes when spring comes. I know they used to use sulfur- but I can't see that being kitty friendly. You could also gently suggest to Calleigh that she bring you a Gift Card or a cup of hot tea next time. Maybe you can teach her how to fetch slippers?? My ankle is only sprained, but I have a respiratory infection . The doctor said I will be at least 2 weeks recovering. She wants me to stay in bed and rest- I told er I don't have time- so she told me to make sure I keep well hydrated and as soon as I can take a breather to do it.

SES - I am glad you found the snake remnants and you don't have to wait until an aroma points you to Calleigh's hiding spot! Your story reminded me a bit of the furry incident I had with Tigger a couple of Christmas' ago.
startsmart - Your comment reminded me - I need to send you some photos.
Secret Santa Ideas - Well, like most women I like chocolate :-). My favorite flower are lilacs, favorite animal is the lion. My home is decorated in different colors in each room - but I prefer rich jewel tones for my accessories. I also have a large collection of items with honeybees on them, as my given name means "Honey Bee" in Greek.
Exchange Students - For those who asked. When they moved both girls in October they went to the same home in the town next door - Dracut. This is now Monse's permanent home for the yea, and both girls were still attending Lowell High. A couple of weeks ago they moved Milla to another home with quite a few little kids. This I only got from comments she has made on her Facebook page. And she has been moved to a new school - so maybe Monse will have a chance to bond with her new family.
And speaking of Facebook - she posted a picture of herself at a dance at Lowell High a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is the girl has NO fashion sense or somehow thought looking "ghetto-fabulous" was a good idea for a pasty white girl from a nordic country. RME.
On Thanksgiving morning I got a message on my answering machine - from Monse. Wishing me a happy Thanksgiving and thanking me for all I had done for her while she was living with me. I was more than a little surprised to say the least.

Guess who is back!!!!!!!!!! Clementine or Mittens whichever you want to call her. She was sitting on the porch when I came home from Church. I am not calling her owners back because I don't have their number and I am not calling the vet either. They called me the last time when they picked her up from the vet and they can call me this time. I will continue to feed her and keep her indoors at night, but she goes out during the day and I don't feed her outdoors. If the other side wants to that is their problem. update; 27 NSD of which 9 are CSD, and 1 EOD. I am using my gift cards right now on groceries and cat items. I am also getting my OTC meds. I have over $800 in gift cards left and I am going to buy me something for Christmas, what, I don't know. But I deserve something just for me.

Sugilite - Glad you enjoyed it - and "Hello" as I don't recall greeting you before this. As some of the longer term members will be able to tell you I have a rather odd sense of the ridiculous and have written several off beat posts regarding fractured fairy tales and revised song lyrics

No grocery shopping last night, though it was still a controlled spend, as I bought a copy of MS OFfice Professional 2010 - only $10 through my work, that's just too good to pass up. We are apparently doing a pantry challenge this week. When I asked DH about shopping last night, he went and looked through the pantry and the freezers and decided that we could go a week eating what we already have. We're trying to get ourselves down to only enough frozen stuff that it will all fit in the freezer portion of our fridge so that we can defrost the chest freezer in the basement. I submitted 9,400 words of a novella I'm working on to a major writers' workshop last night. It's my first major submission, so mostly I'm proud of myself for noticing when the deadline was (before it was past) and getting everything in. It does mean I know what I'm doing with my easter weekend in 2012. Financial goals for 2012: Continue to pay for DH's college in cash- attainable, though we need to up our savings a bit, as it looks like he's going to put off getting his degree by one year in order to get a BA/BS (combo degree) and then be able to go into a Math Masters program. The school doesn't even know what it's tuition rates for the 2012/2013 school year will be yet because the state is messing with budgets. In addition, some of our reserves have been eaten up by Junebug's vet care. Pay for Junebug's surgery in cash- well, via credit card, but then pay it off before any interest is charged. For a dog who doesn't seem to realize anything is wrong with her, this is becoming pretty expensive. It looks like she will need surgery to either drain or remove the swollen salivary glands. Apparently, this normally only happens in one gland, so our vets have been flummoxxed by the fact that for her it's in two glands (one on each side of the face), which is why they kept thinking it was lymph nodes for so long. Save rent from the roommate in order to replace all of our windows this summer. Finish my novella by Easter weekend (not financial, but one of my major 2012 goals anyway) Submit more of my short stories to paying markets and hope to pick up some extra cash Work with the artist to get my next coffee table book project up and running (will hopefully generate some cash for both of us) I've got my 2012 budget together (it's posted over at my financial blog erinshanendoah.com/dogatemywallet/?p=114), but it will need some tweaking. We will continue with debt paydown, but not at breakneck speeds or anything. My biggest challenge really appears to be sticking to the allowance amount I have set for myself. I honestly don't need to increase that amount. I need to develop more discipline around spending money on snacks at work, etc, so that I have money for things I really want, like a visit to my massage therapist.

I got an NS, I think that makes 2 in a row. I'm pretty sure Sunday was a NS too.
Goals for 2012 1) Save at least an additional $50 a month. This year has been bad for adding to savings, I honestly don't think I've transferred anything into savings outside of the auto drafts we have set up. We bought all new kitchen appliances and splurged on anniversary presents this year without touching our savings. So it should be very attainable. 2) Relook at selling the house. There is one empty on the block that has been on the market for at least 6 months, so it may not be the right time, but I'd love to be able to get out of this house and into a new one while interest rates are low. 3) Do a budget overview with DH before January 1st. I'll need to put together a summary of our spending for the year and a proposed budget for 2012 and get his buy in.
SES- Glad you found the parts. Ugghhh. That is much worse than what one of my dogs did the other day. He got into the leftover Halloween candy (luckily most of the chocolate was gone) and ate it and then threw up multiple times on the carpet.

Sugilite - Glad you enjoyed it - and "Hello" as I don't recall greeting you before this. As some of the longer term members will be able to tell you I have a rather odd sense of the ridiculous and have written several off beat posts regarding fractured fairy tales and revised song lyrics Namaste and a big hello to you and everyone else here.

Secret Santa: Like 3cats, purple is my absolute favorite color! I love to read and do some crafty stuff when time allows. I don't drink coffee and don't like scented stuff. I do love chocolate though. Hope that helps Unfortunately I have no idea how many spend days I've had this month or any other days since I've been spending like a drunken sailor . Hopefully I can look through my cc statement later today to try and figure it out. I think I still have one more Ikea trip to do some exchanges and then the reorganization project will be finished. We spent a small fortune and our apartment looks like a whirlwind hit it at the moment but hopefully by the end of the week things will be finished. I'm trying not to panic at how much money we spent since we definitely have the money, I'm trying to just think about how great things will look and how much easier it will be to keep things clean. Plus, I think once I get the last few things for this project I'll be able to avoid stores until after Christmas since I'm finished with all my shopping ! COTW: I still have to do this and I doubt I'll get it done until the weekend but I'm trying. This week is crazy between teaching, a new gig, cleaning, and the girls. Hope everyone is having a good week.

I noticed everyone has brought up coffee and chocolates and stuff for their Secret Santa-
I love coffee, hot chocolate, any chocolate, hot sauces, bbq sauces, ethnic food stuff and recipes.
I like scented stuff, but I guess with DM moving in I should stay away from it until we see how she makes out here. She hasn't had wall-to-wall carpeting in years.
BTW- DM has agreed to be a part of my spending challenges when she moves in! I guess we need a nickname for her now. MamaBear? She says she won't join the group that way I can "vent" to my online friends.
;D
