I watched the memorial last evening. I thought the presidents speech was excellent. No partisonship just a very well said presentation. What say you?

I had to turn it off when he started the shaking of his fist. Cash Cab was a lot more interesting. I'm still wondering why bho was the dominate speaker. For a memorial service I think the first speaker that gave the Indian Prayer was the best.

If you hit play then hit pause, go do something else for a while and let it load, you can probably watch it uninterupted.

He was good, but too long. I think the aide, Rodriguez, I think is his name, was the best. The Indian guy was a bit long winded, too, and did not seem realistic to me. I have driven LOTS of Indians in my cab. (They call themselves Indians on the res here-- as the signs say as you enter the res.) I understand this guy was affiliated with the U of A, but I would have preferred a desert res medicine man, personally, to deliver the prayer. I also liked Gov. Brewer's speech. Short, to the point, and what we needed to hear. I put the young aide 1st place, Gov. Brewer 2nd. Obama did a good job, but it was too long for the occasion, IMO.

I think I answered you on that one on the other thread Krickett..You may have felt to long, I and I believe many felt just right. I missed the Teacher of Indian decent last night, I heard his every word just now, so approprite, a fine benidiction, and heard the others who I had missed too .
I think you missed the whole purpose of the gathering krickett.. the sentiments expressed, to bad.
The ratings of , make no sense to me ..yes I think you missed it all .

SO, Dez-- you did not like what the young aide and Gov. Brewer said? LOL-- I love the way you play all silly when you really have a serious agenda. Funny, Dez. This board is leaning really left, in a big way, especially now that 2 I know are banned, and trying to ban me. LOL-- what is the point of discussion if it is just gossip among your friends?

I thought ALL that spoke at the service had something to offer and something worth listening to. I didn't realize (and I bet they didn't either) that it was some sort of competition to see who said the "best" thing or who got the biggest applause. It was a memorial service for the victims, not a one up contest. Each speaker offered their support, condolences, and shared their emotions & grief with all those present and watching. Which for all of them was a good thing and if taken the right way, could be the first steps towards healing for everyone.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

I agree, steff. I thought all the speakers had something to offer, and enjoyed hearing them speak. I couldn't fault any one of them.

I agree mmhmm.... and don't see the point in picking apart or picking favorites from a memorial service. To me, that is disrespecting the victims who it was for. Each speaker had something worth listening to, something worth taking to heart, and something worth sharing.

Personally, I'm not overly fond of the religious aspects of it all, BUT, I know that the Bible and the verses bring comfort and solice to many many people. It's where they turn when something tragic and unexplainable happens. It's where people look for answers or try to make sense of things.... and if that doesn't help, then they look for comfort in the words and beliefs. So even tho it wouldn't be where I went to for those things, I completely understand that it is where others look for it.... and if it helps them, then it's a great thing in a time like this. I might complain about tv preachers, organized religion, etc, I know that in this situation, it wouldn't be appropriate and does nothing to help the healing process begin.

This board is leaning really left, in a big way, especially now that 2 I know are banned, and trying to ban me. LOL-- what is the point of discussion if it is just gossip among your friends? I liked the whole program Krickett, all of it , from the benediction to the final musical #. Naturally the President had the most to say, well possible the President of the University, Master of Ceremonies and all, not counting minutes, but he should, time of speech, he is the President , and as all were great, he was superb. Your really not getting it Krickett..board leaning a certain way? What the hell does that mean? Is it supposed to be only one way, whichever way? There are over 2000 people involved here and I don't think any two here or not makes a difference and I only know of one who is 'banned" so to speak and if it's the same one your thinking of, she wasn't here long enough to spit, she shot her self in the foot the minute she come aboard. Only one going to be responsible for their getting banned is the one who gets banned krickett , no one else. There are few being banned here , few even with time outs..a warning every now and then..but will suggest constant testing to see how far can be pushed..possible actions , that just a feeling kid , nothing more then experience talking. Suggest, loosen the girdle, let out a bit of wind and enjoy your self.

where I live, all we got was the President's speech. I can't comment on any other speakers. I will say that as the speech went on, I found myself getting a bit uncomfortable. he was leaning dangerously close to making a campaign speech.
just my two cents.

The ending song was the Shaker tune 'Simple Gifts'. Nicely sung.

He was burying six, including a nine year girl, plus fourteen others who are in various levels of recovery. One I know has lost a leg to amputation, the country has gone through a week of trauma, he is the President of the United Statws, he spoke eloquently,
He spent a few minutes on a topic that is a fact, not blaming the other side just saying what it is , what has been happening on the rhetoric and the necessity to come to gether and where one can't see eye to eye discuss with respect. Most of america I feel feel that is important, in fact have been asking that to happen for a long time now. That bother s you? He spent a few moments on that..he has the right to point something out that just about everyone has been discussing and pointing fingers at and he pointed no fingers, just asked us to consider making some changes in the tone, still disagree , discuss with respect is all.
Not that he took to task or did any of that but I have to ask Chiver, you never have been called out by a teacher, a parent, a coach , your non-com if you had served.
How about your husband if married , boy friend if not. Have you ever corrected some one, set them straight, suggested something to anyone as change of habit, to better one self.
Campaign speech? I have heard many of those, This was not one...I saw it as non political a speech as a political person, {he is one you know, they all are there} could make. Even the congresswoman who while not the most important who was wounded but the most well know, as political a person there in the group of politicians. there is nothing dirty or wrong there in that.
Now I will say, if the opposite political party was desturbed because the leader of the opposition party made a great speech..he is a fabulouse speaker you know, non political but a great speech to the American pubklic and they feel at a loss..well tough but I still say that is not what this gathering was about. The'll get over it I am sure.

Call me old school but I thought the applause and cheering inappropriate for a memorial service I'm inclined to agree with that point, but over all I think it was done with as much grace as possible, under the circumstances.

thank you, thinking-long-term. that's what I was about to say to dezi. dezi, if you're trying to call me out as being the "opposite party" and that's why I was offended, then you are sadly misguided. I hope you're not calling me out solely because I disagree with you. I just think that the well-placed pauses for effect could have been removed.

Had nothing to do with political parries..lets talk about the applause and the calling out.
This was a University Stadium..there were many students there. It's expected they might be a bit more exuberance in their actions. As I said on a earlier post..this was the end of a week of grief and morning..I gave a example from years ago of what I remembered from the Kennedy assassination and the week leading up to the burial and how that Sunday, it seemed my whole town showed up to a bowling alley to just try and get back to normal.
I feel a lot of that exuberance was the same thing. I wasn't going to knit pick every utterance the President made..I thought the whole 1:24.02 was fantastic and I re watched all of it today from the flick that was posted, again thanks.
Disagree with me is fine..I wasn't calling you out, just posting my interpretation of the same event and possible you might see where I was coming from, explaining away what you felt was distasteful.
This was a very unusual event. Presidents don't just go here and there to these things. Events to involve the whole country are not that common, especially to take up a whole week and I am sure it's not over yet.
There is the arraignment of the suspect, more charges , the mental exams, the prosecutors, defense of, more things come out about him, deciding what do we do with this kid. Is he sane to stand trial..is he another Hinkley..does insanity take a back seat to a demonstration that insane or not..behavior like this, involving innocents , with a nine year old girl leading the way.. justice is needed, the hell with he was just nuts. lots to go yet.

I didn't have a problem with the applause when it came to acknowledging the people who put themselves in danger trying to save the wounded and taking down the gunman. And not all memorial services have a nonstop somber mood. Often jokes and stories are told that folks laugh about. There's also the traditional New Orleans jazz funerals where the lives are celebrated and the atmosphere is anything but somber. Different people express their grief in a variety of ways.

I was thinking while listening to him - why do I have to disagree so much with his politics, he's such a great speaker. I still like his speech on race in Philadelphia the best.
I was a bit thrown off by the multiple religious aspects of the speeches and reading of scripture. Not that I minded it, even though I'm not particularly religious, but just surprised.
