Bought some more PSEC today ; also added to T, VGR & STWD positions. PS: I have lots of COP and I am very optimistic about this stock despite the Dividend cut. It has held up nicely, has plenty of FCF & still has a Dividend yield of over 2% ......... I am confident they will restore the Dividend in the Qtr's ahead.

Got COP and TCPC today, had to go at market as stocks held up. Also added some AI.
VA, fully agree on your COP comment. May take some time, but patience is a virtue.

Two companies to own for possible splits :
PFE & INTC -
PFE is certainly going to happen at some point and INTC is more speculative but could very well happen.

Owned INTC but only overnight, wanted cash profit .... got 2% gain. It could well be on its way higher INTC got bad news yesterday with revenues down but they also announced they were laying off 12,000 employees ( a whole lot of savings in salaries and benefits) and reorganizing the company. Pair that with the possibility of a split and their good yield (currently 3.25%) and I believe it is a great investment.

Looks like the Big Boys are rotating out of REITs - This is the time to start looking at bargains.
"O" down over 4% today - Others : Realty Income (O -4%), Omega Healthcare (OHI -3.8%), Ventas (VTR -4.2%), HCP (HCP -3.4%), Vereit (VER -2.2%), General Growth (GGP -2.2%), Federal Realty (FRT -2%), Public Storage (PSA -2.7%), Equity Commonwealth (EQC -2.3%), Hospitality Properties (HPT -4.9%), Stag Industrial (STAG -2.5%) Buy when they go on sale and they are going on sale as of today !

Man, if they suddenly go on a fire sale. I'll venture out on margin a bit (but not too far). I'm a sucker for bargains.

I'm trying though. It's funny how higher yields scare so many people away yet that's where the income is. You just have to play it in smaller amounts for caution but in my opinion you shouldn't stay away.

Mod, V, agree. All you have to do is look at my stock of the week pick AMLP, pays around 10%. It was really at a fire sale when it bottomed out at 7.

I have looked at AMLP TY, I was thinking of adding in my IRA because it would give me exposure to MLPs. I have heard you should never have MLPs in a non taxable account because they become a tax nightmare. Supposedly you can avoid all that with a fund like AMLP - do you know if that is true? In my taxable accounts I own individual MLPs so covered there.

Yes, Mr.V, that would have been a good fire sale grab. www.finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=AMLP add: Mr.V, higher yield stocks carry a bit of extra risk, however do not see the problem some people apparently see (or think they see in them). I am more than content to collect an average monthly return of 10%+ on my dividend stocks.

Mr.V, Bought 2C NMFC Friday, a "toe in the water" buy. May try to round out the position on Monday if price is "right" (off 5-7 cents p/s). Just enough funds in account to cover. Try to diversify in round lots of 500C up to 1k each, and am usually close to fully invested.

Mr V, AMLP is treated like any other stock. The fund takes care of all the little tax problems of MLP's.

Well, that would make it worth any fees they may charge in itself. Those K-1s sure come in late in the tax season !

DOW back over 18,000 again ! Wish I had a dollar for every time it crossed - I might be rich ! The good news for me ( and hopefully the rest of you) every time it pulls back and then crosses over again my account seems to grow so I can't complain too much.

I need to broaden my brackets ... out too soon on some The Virginian or ModE98, what is a reasonable payout ratio? Some things I've been looking at seem to have a ratio too high to be supported

Some things I've been looking at seem to have a ratio too high to be supported Hey Ombud, I am not very savvy when it comes to charts and fundamentals. I usually invest by instinct and by reading every article I can find on a potential stock and reading people's comments. Not very intellectual but so far it has worked well for me. As for Payout Ratios - Not a very good metric in my opinion. It doesn't really give an accurate picture for a lot of stocks. That is especially true for REITS and MLPs. Even a stock like VGR - Finvez has its ratio at 315% but it has been that way forever ( I have VGR in my portfolio, I could be wrong but I think it is more of a reflection on the accounting ) . Bottom line - I look at the Payout Ratios but I don't make decisions based on them. It seems you have to look at the big picture for each company. If you are short term trading - I don't think it matters much at all.

XOM has been going thru the ups and downs in oil prices for YEARS. They have it down pat how to survive the down times. The fire sale for them was when they went below 70.

Yes, I think XOM should be a foundation stock for everyone's portfolio. I read a lot about how oil is going to be replaced by renewable energy stocks but I am very confident I will not see that in my lifetime. Still lots of money to be made in oil ( and coal for that matter)
