I used to work out in the evenings or afternoons. Since the beginning of January, I started working out in the morning instead. I feel better (at least I think I do unless I'm imagining the whole thing). So when is the best time to work out? Does it matter? When do you work out?

Since I have to be at work at 6AM, my workouts are in the afternoon. Usually 3ish.

I do a morning boot camp all summer, starts at 5:30AM. I find I feel better the rest of the day when I get that out of the way first thing.

Weekdays I exercise about 7pm. On the weekends, it's in the morning or afternoon, depending on our plans for the day.

I usually work out starting about 7:30pm, that way I can collapse on the couch when I get home. I try to do mornings on the weekends as the gym closes at 1:00pm. Since I'm working at home today, I'll probably go in a little earlier.

Around 9:00 a.m.
My old schedule was yoga or callanetics on waking. 10:30 Gilad workout on TV followed by ski machine except on house cleaning day and that was before the workout. If I was working I had a weight training program to do on morning coffee break. It wasn't heavy and I didn't sweat as I had to work at the job afterward. Downhill or cross country skiing followed by snow shoveling on some days. Golf in the summer with one day of yard/outside house maintenance.

In the evening or even at night. I've actually hurt myself while exercising in the morning during my university years. I can manage getting up early, I can be at my desk by 7 am should there any need, I can catch a 5 am flight, but I'd totally knock myself out with my dumbbells should I need to exercise in the morning once again.

I've been taking Zumba and Ultimate Cardio classes at noon. If I can't make it, I'll go to Zumba at 4, I have to leave work early, though. Today I hit a kickboxing class at 11:15 after I took DS to hockey.
I've found that unless I do it at lunch or right after work, it's not going to happen.

When I can, I get to the gym at 5:30am. If I have to go in the evenings, I am more than likely not going

At this point, I go to work at 8am, so it's just too early for my lazy butt to get up to go to the gym before work. I have to go to the gym after work so after 4, and it's hard that time of day for me since my energy and motivation levels are really flagging by that point. When I do work out in the morning I feel really good the rest of the day! I just signed up for my YMCA's boot camp class which is at 5:30am twice a week, starts in one week. Looking forward to it even though I'll be dying getting up that early!

I prefer to work out first thing in the morning and just get "dressed" once - but that hasn't happened since kids I always felt more energetic and a sense of accomplishment plus it wasn't hanging over my head all day. Currently, I either try to squeeze in a quick something if both kids nap at the same time, otherwise I'm trying to at least do some ab work in the evening before going to bed. Other than that, my "workout" is keeping up with an energetic 3yo and 6mo! And that's exhausting...

In respect to energy working out in the morning will get your day started off right, just make sure to warm up really good since your muscles have been at rest for 8 hours( I am guessing 8). To keep the energy going all day you need to keep moving and eat enough. The reason you feel better after you work out is because it increases your blood flow which provides more oxygen to the body. If you workout and go sit at a cubicle for a few hours your blood flow will slow down and decrease your energy or might even make you sleepy if you worked out before because your body hasn't recuperated yet. I am not saying working out in the morning is the only way to get energy, as long as you get up and keep moving with proper nutrition you should feel great all the time. Personally I try to work out about 10 am and then again around 8 pm, but this is because I work 12 hour shifts and have to adjust my schedule. Really the time you workout doesn't matter as long as you do . I have no children and if I did I probably wouldn't want to workout as much .

When I can, immediately after work. I discovered when I first started working out that if I was at the gym past 7 pm, I wind up eating dinner later than I like and I'm too stimulated to sleep. I get up at 5 am to go be at work before 7 - so I can leave about 3:30 and be dressed and working out by 4. That gets me in and out of the gym before the masses hit.
My gym bag is always in the back of my car, so I have no excuse to not go. I leave work and go directly to the gym since I discovered a long time ago that if I go home to change, there is no way I'll be leaving home again.

Oh great so working out in the morning is going to kill me? The next thing I know you'll be telling me that butter is bad for me too.

Darn that Dr.Oz and his healthy ways! Uh, Jake 6:30 am? You do know that early morning workout is going to be the end of you, right?

The best time to work out is late afternoon. As you well know your body warms up as the day goes on which is why your temperature peaks towards the end of the day. That rise in temperature is also what makes your body more flexible and loose. Later in the day you're already slowing down and you won't have maximum energy to do a great workout. The worst time to workout is first thing in the morning when you need lots of warmup to prevent injury. Your body will thank you if you do your work out later in the day. Next week we have DST changeover so get those workouts in the early evening.

Dang it IHOP. I was loving the morning workout. I do, however, warm up first.

I prefer working out in the morning. Seems the later in the day the workout, the more excuses pop up to miss it (for me anyway). and Dr. Oz I do evening workouts too. The YMCA is close to work. Now that the time has changed, I'll get my bike back to the office & ride after work

I primarily work out at night, but if I can get up early enough I'll go in the mornings. If I didn't have a job, I would go in the middle of the day as that is when my body seems to have the most energy. Oh why can't I win the lottery already!

I prefer late afternoon- I work through lunch, then use the company gym after it's settled. The workout actually gives me a second burst of energy.
When I travel on business, it's almost always first thing in the AM. I hate that, unless it's an outdoor pool in a warm climate (rare), but it's usually the only time I can do it and then it's out of the way. I was in Chicago earlier this week and had to get up at 6 AM Tuesday and Wednesday to work out. With the added impact of the DST change to the clocks, that was rough.

Because of my commute and preference for classes rather than gym machines, I work out in the evenings during the week, but mornings (09:00am) on weekends. If I cycle to work I get a morning and an early evening workout that day.

At night about 45-60 minutes after dinner. I get through a workout easier with some food in my belly, but not totally stuffed.

HIIT in the morning for 20 minutes before work on stationary bike or eliptical, then weights after work. I am usually home by 5pm, take my pre-workout supps and go downstairs to hit it. It's like my sanctuary. I put my headphones on and blast Pandora. I am kind of glad that I build a gym in my basement with all the equipment. It saves me TONS of time instead of driving to the gym.
