3cats - Know that if I was closer I would come down there and help you tackle those projects as my birthday gift to you. Take care of yourself today. Go someplace that makes you happy - a park, a garden or a stream. Be as good to yourself as you would be to a friend in the same situation. Happy Birthday!

QOTW: on sundays I generally flip through my stack of cookbooks to find a variety of meals, some we know we like and at least one new one. I use proteins we have in the freezer, although yesterday I had to restock up and we should be good through November, at least. I usually cook (or blue sometimes starts dinner before I get home - I write the meals, cookbook name, and page number on a calendar on the fridge) Monday, tuesday, and wednesday, and then we do leftovers the rest of the week, and usually eat out Saturdays. I try to cook Sundays too. We need to start having blue plan the weekends agian. It worked well for a few weeks. Of course, starting next week I'm going to have class Monday and Tuesday so that will throw things into disarray for about 10 weeks...
I kind of covered the challenge too I guess. I just shopped so I have a lot of stuff around.

3cats - <- Pretend that last one is a mug of tea, ok? Happy Birthday! We're all blessed to know you. May your next year be comfortable, relatively stress free, and free from family drama. Hey, a girl can hope! MK - Sadly, there's really no way to track the money order without my receipt/stub. I double checked the FAQ's on Moneygrams website, and you really are out of luck if you've lost the receipt and/or the money order has been lost or stolen. IF you've got the money order number, they'll tell you if it's been cashed or not and provide a photocopy of the money order. BUT there's still no recourse if it was cashed by someone other than it's intended recipient. With a cashier's check from my credit union, they at least keep a copy of the check and the record is linked to my account, so if something like this were to happen again, I'd have a much easier time proving that I paid. On health insurance, have you tried shopping for coverage outside of employer benefits recently? I did some checking for myself (getting my budget ready for college) and was pleasantly surprised that I qualified and that rates were lower than I expected. It's worth a try.

QOTW- I used to go through the pantry and fridge, make notes of everything I had and plan meals by the month. I got out of this last year when DGM got sick again. COTW- I don't think I'll be home for dinner until next week.... Can I have a mulligan? I have a business meeting tonight, dinner w/ DM/DGM tomorrow, working dinner at DGMs Wednesday, party Thursday, party Friday, and party Saturday. (I don't have many friends- but they all conveniently scheduled parties right around my b-day Friday) However- I am cooking a bunch of chicken in the slow cooker so I can freeze it. Bought for 99c/lb.

Can't plan meals when I don't know if I will be driving when I would be cooking ARG! Hoping this gets settled this week!
As for shopping for insurance I have but need to do it yet again and set up a spreadsheet to figure it all out. Lovely

QOTW-Usually I look at our calendar for the week and decide which nights I'm cooking and which nights are leftover nights. Then based on what we want and what is on hand, I make our menu. My rule is that I never buy protein for a dish unless it is on sale. We have a big freezer in the basement and I keep it pretty well stocked with protein. We usually have whole chickens, chicken breasts & thighs, pork chops & roasts, brisket, ground beef & ground turkey in the freezer. When we start running low on something then I start looking for a sale on that item. Usually they run on 6-8 week cycles around here. COTW-This is timely. I asked DH to inventory the freezer in the basement last week. I also just stocked up on crushed tomatoes, Aldi's finally had them in stock again. They say it is a seasonal item, but it is a canned good. Which I don't understand, but they have it so I bought 12 big cans which should last me a while. This week I'm making skillet lasagna, only thing I needed to buy was diced tomatoes. Then I am planning on a big batch on enchiladas this week as well, only thing I needed was the crushed tomatoes and tortillas. Then we'll do a chicken dish, because we have 16 packages of chicken in the freezer, evidently there were some good sales recently I wasn't paying attention to our stock. I started some black beans soaking this AM, so I can cook them tonight and then make myself some black bean enchiladas with the chicken ones. The rest of the black beans I'm freezing in 12 oz portions, since I've read you can sub those in for the canned black beans. I also am hoping to get some pizza dough prepped and in the freezer this week, but those ingredients are all on hand. [glow=red,2,300]HAPPY BIRTHDAY 3 CATS!!![/glow] You are an inspiration to us all! ETA: hmmmm...I tried to use the glowing text for 3 cats Happy Birthday and it does't seem to work.

QOTW: How do you accomplish your meal/grocery planning for the week? At the beginning of each month I make a list of meals that I would like to make throughout the month. On Thursday or Friday night, I take a look at that list and I choose 3. 2 meals for the weekend and then 1 crockpot or very quick meal for the week. Last week, I looked at the sale fliers before I chose my meals. So, that is a new step for me I am trying to incorporate. DH writes down things we need throughout the week. Then I organize my grocery list based on where I am buying things at and in some semblence of order (if I just shop at Walmart, the list is based on our usual progression through walmart in order). COTW: I actually did this for this week at least for one meal. I've had a ton of chicken in the freezer. So, I made homemade fried chicken on Saturday night. Hmmm... good stuff. DS is so funny because he will eat a whole leg himself! Well, it was a super productive morning at work. The boss took us out to lunch again. However, our lunch ended up being free because they have 15 min lunch guarentee and we timed them for fun and they were late. Happy Birthday 3cats! Have a wonderful day.

Update: 9 CS + 3 NS = 12 of 24 Counting today, there are 12 days left in the month. In order to meet my goals, I will need for not a single one of them to be a spend and for 9 of them to be no spends. Somehow I don't think that's happening. We did more spending last week than I was expecting, or more scattered spending, I should say. My father came and helped us do a lot of electrical work on the house, which necessitated multiple trips to home stores for things we needed. Also, even though I asked him in advance what I should have in the house for him, he said "oh nothing" and then there turned out to be a couple things he wanted, so there were a couple extra trips to the grocery store, as well. We've got a couple big spends coming up this week- paying for fall quarter for DH and smogging and registering the second car. But those are planned for bills, so they don't count toward my spend days at all. Still, its hard seeing all that money go out of the accounts.
[glow=purple,2,300]HAPPY BIRTHDAY 3CATS[/glow]
*hugs* to miz, mrsl, financialpeace, honey, 3cats, dakota, mk and whoever else needs them. Seems like last week was a tough week. Here's hoping it gets better
emotional spending: I've found it helps to be able to talk to someone about the urge to shop who won't encourage you to do so, who will help you fill the emotional hole without stuff. The other thing I do is start researching major purchaces I want to make, or planning vacations I know we won't take. In the end, it ends up being useful because then when we do go to make that major purchase we have the information in hand.
qotw: We don't really create a meal plan. With just the two of us, we tend to eat the same meals fairly regularly, and we tend to keep what we need for those things in stock. I keep thinking I'd like to try a meal plan, but since DH is the main cook, I feel its more up to him than me.
cotw: I think we'll mostly be eating out of the pantry this week. We didn't really do any gorcery shopping this weekend, and other than milk, I don't know that there's anything we need.

spruby: As for clothes. Remember a year or so ago when there was a lot of talk around the 6 piece clothing diet? I kind of took that to heart. I don't have a lot of closet space in our current house and forced myself to purge everything I did not wear. Now, I still go through clothes 2-4 times a year and purge things I notice I'm not wearing. I also have a deal with myself that for every new top that comes in, 2 old tops have to go and for every new pair of pants that come in, one pair of old pants have to go. I'm also losing weight and the new jeans I just bought a couple weekends ago were a full size smaller than the ones I'd bought about 6 months before that. But I've found for me, holding on to things I *might* wear again doesn't motivate me, it just depresses me that I can't fit into it. And for me, depression is a huge factor in weight gain. So, I go with the it needs to fit and it needs to look good theory, for it to stay in my closet. Because I feel better when I like the way I look, and I lose weight when I feel good about myself. If that means that I slowly spend my allowance on new pieces of clothes here and there as I lose weight, well, that's fine with me. Depending on the clothes, I donate to different organizations. Most go to Goodwill, but my nice work clothes- dress pants, suits, etc go to organizations that help provide needy women with interview/work clothes.

Update: 12/15 NSD, 5/10CSD
Since it is just me I don't do a lot of planning. Usually I cook on the weekend and have leftovers for a few days. Often I also have enough to freeze for future weeks as well. -- Well I have been doing this for weeks now. I actually just restocked the freezer on Saturday since I managed to eat everything out of it and it was emptied on Friday. Now that the major danger of hurricane season is waning I will be doing more of the stocking up and cooking to add to the freezer. I should be able to begin using my big freezer by the beginning of the next month. Everything is crammed into the little one at the top of the fridge.
Sheila-- I will be snowed under with computer projects all school year as I am the MS Computer teacher and I have about 300 students. I do occasionally come up for air but only knowing that the next group of projects is only a few days away and that it will take me hours to get through them. This is the main reason I sort of disappear for days at a time from the thread. I usually try to read some each night but can't always post.
BH Ladies -- you have email. Will demo some of my prep for this week's classes.

Update: 5 NSD, 11 NEO, 1 MOANMy birthday is April 30th. Thanks for all the thoughts about emotional spending. It seems to be something a lot of people struggle with. I think what has been helping me the most is thinking about my financial goals and my upcoming layoff. I cringe at spending money unnecessarily whenever I think about my layoff. However, I found out today I have the option to extend again until November 4th. I have been pretty miserable the last couple months and if I extend, there will only be two or three of us out of six that do. It's just become really unpleasant to be there. I am pretty sure I will end up extending, but I need to make sure I have standing permission to leave on short notice when my SIL goes into labor in October. She wants me there right after the baby is born and she is an eight hour drive away. I have not done well on my NSDs since I joined this group. Next month, I am going to change strategies and my husband I will get some fun money out of each check that won't count as a spend day. It seems the two or three dollars here and there is what really messes me up. Hopefully the fun money will get me on track and contain those little spends to a reasonable amount. QOTW/COTW: I have only recently started meal planning. It's difficult for me because I am not much of a cook. Once I am off work, I plan to get real serious about meal planning and couponing/watching sales to reduce our grocery budget. I hope to make it a habit, so it is easy to continue once I find a new job. I just did the grocery shopping on Saturday and don't plan to shop again until next weekend, so it's too late to shop from my pantry this week. Or maybe I'm ahead as that's all I'm doing today through the rest of the week .

First things first: Happy Birthday to the Wonderful 3cats! 3cats- I can't comprehend how your family doesn't see how wonderful you are but instead of focusing on their blindness I want you to know that you are special. You're dedicated and loyal and kind, you're generous and sweet and determined and I've learned so much from your example over the years. Thank you for being here and sharing with us all. Also one of my favorite songs EVER which I think should be sung in lieu of "happy birthday" this year: A Rant (with apologies to all Canadians), I am really really close to making public my intense dislike for y'all, eh, because of ONE person who is tempting my last bit of self control. It's basically a contractor in one of the companies where I am contracted who knows nothing, has intense delusions of adequacy and constantly takes my proprietary information and claims to be an expert on it. All while doing no work and deluding no one but herself. Smackdowns have been had this week and I stand by the motto "beatings will continue until morale improves" because this Canadian is giving an entire country a bad reputation. Even Celine Dion couldn't do that. QOTW: How do you accomplish your meal/grocery planning for the week? This week I actually sketched it out but I'm about 50/50 for following the list... oops. Basically because I don't eat breakfast and then I just heat up whatever is around until I run out of food. Buy tacos and groceries, rinse and repeat. COTW: Shop your pantry! Go through your pantry and freezer and try to create a meal plan for the next week or so with minimal shopping at the grocery store. I'm actually cleaning out my fridge since I'll be out of town soon. I do need to freeze some milk or make pudding though. Today I stayed home and didn't need to shop since I found I had a "spare" 5 pound bag of flour hidden in the pantry. Also I made 2 pies on Sunday so I need to wrap them up and freeze for later.

mizbear; If you look at the top of the home page there is a block that says "calendar". that is where you will find the birthdays if the person listed them. That is why I got sapphire's birthday mixed up because there is a "sapphire62" and she is "sapphire12". You have to click through the whole month to find them. But I have a list of the birthdays from the old board and I have addresses. I am going to send birthday gifts again next year so if you want one I will need your mailing address and your birthday. I know there are 2 or 3 within the first week of the year. Also, are we going to send Christmas cards this year? I am planning on getting mine started this week. Are we going to have a Secret Santa? If you want a birthday gift or Christmas Card, PM me with your address unless I have it. I still have the colors of your kitchens unless you have painted them, then I will need the new color.

My birthday is 5/2 I'd be in for Christmas cards and/or Secret Santa if we're doing it. 3cats, I think you have my address from last year but let me know if you need it. Happy Happy Birthday 3cats!!! What a day! This morning I had DD2 in the ergo and I fell at the park. I tripped and fell to my knees and she may have hit her head but I did manage to mostly fall on my hand/side. However, later in the day she started screaming inconsolably for 20-30 minute stretches. We already had a doctor appointment scheduled since she has a bit of a cough that I wanted to get checked. While we were there, the doctor examined her and said everything seemed fine but then DD started a screaming fit and that concerned the doctor so she wanted us to hang out a bit. After about 20 minutes I was able to calm DD down and get her to eat a bit so the doctor said we could go home but we have to take her to the ER if she starts doing it again tonight. So far she seems fine so I'm hoping she just had a bit of a headache and the tylenol we gave her at the office did the trick. I'm really hoping she's ok and we don't have to make a midnight run to the ER for a CT . Since I didn't feel up to going to the gym we went to Costco. I did pretty good on the food budget but still overspent by $25, largely because DH didn't bother to tell me he needed a few things when I asked him to look at the list. We did spend an additional $100 on household items/diapers that we needed but still not what I had hoped to do tonight. These kinds of trips are why I save an additional $25/mo for household items outside the normal budget. At least when I have to stock up I can draw on that $ too. The grocery budget for the month is done so I'm hoping we can make it 11 days with what we have. The girls and I are probably going to Redding on Sept 30th so if we're totally out of food by then we'll have a few days cushion of being gone since DH will be on his own.

Happy Friday/Monday! LOL. One of the things I will not miss about working in retail is the weekday confusion. At least no matter if it's Friday or Monday, it's understandable that I want a margarita after working today. Update: 10/16 NSD With 11 days left in the month and $0 left in my bank account, it's a strong possibility that I'll meet or exceed my extended goal. Today marks 39 days until my student loan is paid off. ;D ;D I'm currently considering two oppertunities to make some extra cash to repay my BFF who loaned me $300 to keep me in the black this month and to get a head start on the cost of moving into a different place. The first is a potential short term roomie, a professional who works less than a mile from where I live who has been commuting 2+ hours a day for 3 years. She's looking for a place to stay during the work week for 1-3 months and would pay $300 per month in rent. All I have to do is get the guest room organized and move my sewing machine into my room. The second is an offer to sew 4 bridesmaids dresses for a wedding at the end of October. I've already seen the pattern (easy, 4-5 hours per dress, tops) and the fabric. If they tried to order dresses now they'd easily spend $1,000 and still be chewing their fingernails praying for the UPS/FEDEX gods to be with them. I'm thinking of charging $400. So if those both worked out, I could make anywhere from $700-$1300 extra by the end of the year. That plus my regular pay should let me move Jan. 1st without stressing about money. And with that said, I need to go work on that guest room. The potential roomie is coming by tomorrow morning to see the place and right now it looks like...well...it looks like a sewing room.

3 cats -- Glad you had a good birthday! The calendar at the top gives birthdays for everybody who listed their birthday in their profile. Sapphire62 doesn't post on the NS/Cs board so it was confusing to people. MK keeps the list of NS/CS posters for us. Thanks MK! AOTW/COTW: Luckily, I am not a foodie so this is not a problem area in my budget. Dave Ramsey would think I was starving if he saw my budget for food. The month is 2/3 gone and I've spent under $70 for food and this includes eating out 5 times. Breakfast is the same: yogurt and granola cereal. A cup of juice before I leave home in the morning. At other times of the day, I only drink water, so while I do buy bottled water, my drink expenses are less than $12 a month. I gave up sodas when I was in college; I cannot have my face breaking out due to some toxic drink. I will drink a soda on occasion when I go out. I do drink ginger ale when I'm sick, so maybe 6 of those a year. Dinner is fish 4 to 5 nights a week with a veggie. Lunch is the same thing all week -- be it chicken salad, spaghetti, turkey wings + veggie and fruit. I cook on the weekend. I don't stockpile b/c I don't have the freezer space. I do buy 10lb of trout about every 6 weeks. A package of ground turkey lasts me for 3 weeks. My grocery budget is $200 month which includes eating out. In the winter, I spend about $125 max. I do one dish meals and I don't buy as much fresh produce. moneysquirrel -- Thanks for sharing the slideshow. I forwarded it to momsapphire. Now, I need to be in your class so I can learn how to create my own. My powerpoint skills are very limited. financialpeace -- I'm the opposite of you and I suppose most people. I don't shop when I'm upset because at that point, I don't like anything. I also don't eat when I'm upset. Now, it's been quite some time since I've been upset enough to not make me eat. The key is when you are not upset, develop a plan of action for what you will do when you are upset. Going for a walk is a great stress reliever for me. Blasting my ipod also works. I also like the Caribbean Ocean, but I don't like close enough and it's not feasible to fly there whenever I'm upset. LOL.

i will go back and read and comment in a bit but i have a question for you all.
i was contacted yesterday by a company wanting to either put a sponsored post or a 12 month link on my blog. this means that they'll pay me. i'm researching the company now to make sure that they jive with my morals and standards. should i find them acceptable, how much do i charge them? i've never been in this situation before and it's kind of weird.

sbcaligirl - Sorry about the trip and fall. How scary. Hopefully, DD#2 is ok.
mrsl - Congrats on the possibility of getting paid. I have no advice.
So, taking an idea from azmom (although I have a ton more space to run around), I was running around my yard last night after DS went to bed and that has been fun because the dogs can run with me. Suddenly, the dogs took off to the valley to the north. I called them back and they eventually came back. I thought there was something out there based on a shadow I saw and the way the dogs reacted. Anyway, I do another lap around the yard and I look at the house to the north (the one in forclosure), there is a big ole deer standing by the back door! It was just crazy. Anyway, I'm not comfortable running on our road after dark because as a driver it would tick me off to come across someone running on a dark road. DH is going to mow me a running trail out in our field so I can run after dark and not do 10 laps around the yard.

Update: 15/20 NSD redwagon: Brilliant idea to go through the cookbooks for meal planning! That's what I need to do to add some variety into our meals. We tend to do the same basic dozen meals or so over and over again. reenee: Keep us posted on the apartment situation. We can have a posse rounded up if needed Good luck with the extra income. The dresses sound like a great opportunity. The roommate- could be good but make sure you are both on the same page so you don't run into problems/headaches down the road. mizbear: Sounds like you have a super busy week planned. MK: Good luck with the insurance/carpooling issues this week. Dakota: We do the same thing with our proteins- only buy on sale and stock up. How are things going at Mini-D's school this week? Getting better? muttley: Your husband is so adorable. That's so sweet of him to make you your very own running track Shanen: Glad your dad was able to get some projects done for you but sorry that they required some extra spending on your part. FinancialPeace: Don't get discouraged- it sometimes takes a while to get into a real rhythm with the CS/NS thing. Allowances are a great idea. It's what DH and I do- keeps cash in his pocket and keeps me from nagging at him every time he swipes his debit card for $2.78 at the gas station. We do $20 a week- seems to work out ok for us. 3Cats: Glad you had a good day on your birthday. sbcali: Hoping DD2 is fully recovered from your fall yesterday and feeling better. Darn those husbands and their forgetful ways! DH claims he is going to start adding the phrase "and all other things I remember I need" to the bottom of all future shopping lists. mrslynch: That's so exciting that you may be able to get paid for your blog! Congrats to you. sapphire: Jealous of your monthly grocery bill.

reenee: I say this out of love, because the last thing you need is more issues with the apartment complex- double check your lease. What you are considering is called sub-letting and many apartment leases strictly forbid it. They do not want anyone living in the apartment that is not on the lease. While most places won't really go after you for this, with the other issues you're having, it could allow them to kick you out with little to no notice.
mrsl: YAY! But I have no idea how much to charge. Maybe ask that question over at the Yakezie forums?
sbcali: Hope you and DD2 are doing okay today
financialpeace: It takes a while to get the hang of the NS/CS days and also a while to figure out a system that works for you. Just this summer I added "gas only" no spend days and they'll go back in my count when DH goes back to school next week. That is generally one day a week where the only money spent is on gas. I count it as a no spend day since you need gas when you need gas.
muttley: At least the dogs came back. Junebug decided to run up the Beagle Eating Hill (TM) at the dog park last night. We'd expected it; she hadn't had hill time in a while. What we didn't expect was for her to spend close to an hour on the hill. She found bunnies at least two different time to chase through the blackberries. It got dark and we were at the point that I was going to head home with Larry and come back with a flashlight and treats when we discovered that she was finally done and waiting at the bottom of the stairs for us. She was on the other side of a fence though, and we might have missed her (it really was dark by then) if it hadn't been for Larry running up to that corner.
I had to stop by the store to pick up a couple Rxs for the MIL (her money) and grabbed milk for us (our money). Then we took the Chevy down to Les Schwab to get a tire replaced and the others checked. I'm counting it as a controlled spend because we have the car fund, and we knew we'd be spending this month to get the Chevy ready to drive again. (It's been in "storage" in our driveway for over a year.) After the stress at the dog park, I was very happy to come home and collapse in front of new How I Met Your Mother and Castle.
