Before my regular start I want to post that we here over at the Controlled/No Spend Thread are doing an overhaul. We want to be more welcoming of new people and get back to our basics.
Reenee has graciously volunteered to spearhead making weekly captains to help track every one's numbers, come up with weekly challenges and questions and give shout outs to make sure everyone feels welcome and recognized.
Please feel free to join us in our restart. Now onto the usual explaination:
Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month.
CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) MOAN: Moving our a$$ Now aka exercising NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Getting Nitzed is referring to when you have a long post and MSN cuts you off so its in two posts instead one. Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DH
For a while I was doing a Question of the Week. One week my question was "How has this thread changed your habits? What tangible benefits have you seen by being a member? I know we occassionally get someone on here that just doesn't get the concept of no spend is so much more then no spending 10 days to blow everything on day 11."
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

Welcome everyone! I'm kicking off the beginning of September as the first of our volunteer weekly captains. To help with tracking, please post your goals and later your updates in this format:
Goal: 8 NSD, 10 CSD, 15 NEO
or
Update: 1/8 NSD, 2/10 CSD, 3/15 NEO in an update, the first number is the number of days you've achieved so far and the second number is your goal.
Question of the Week: Do you know where your mail is? Do you have a system for organizing it?
Challenge of the Week: Designate a spot for mail and figure out a way to sort it that works for you.

Goal: 8 NSDQOTW - err, my mail is currently piled in the cupboard next to the refrigerator, wedged between the bullet blender and my multivitamins. When Mr. Potential surprised me on Monday, I shoved everything from the counters into the cupboard so it's even less organized than it was before. COTW - work in progress. And I'm going to stop there for tonight because I'm not feeling too great.

Goals for September: 20 NS/CS, 12 MOANs, 25 NEOs, and keeping the house clean (within reason of course )
QOTW: Well, I don't really have a system for mail except giant piles around the house . I did just gather everything though and go through it all so this is a great time to institute a policy. COTW: I think I'll try something new and come up with an actual system and get all my remaining paperless stuff set up. ETA: I'm going to count anything outside of normal budgeted bills, allowance and anything over grocery budget a spend day. CS will be under $10 AND a neccessity.

Goals - 25 NS/CS, 20 NEO, keep the food spending under $350. QOTW: I usually sort the mail first thing when I get home... all junk/envelopes get thrown away, bills get put on the table in the kitchen nook, statements and other stuff gets filed. (By "filed" I mean I put it in a pile on top of the filing cabinet and put everything away only when I find myself digging through the pile for 20 minutes looking for something)

Goals: 20 NS days, 25 NEO days QOTW: The mail comes into the kitchen and gets set on the island. I go through it and toss (recycle) all the junk mail, envelopes, etc. The actual bills and keeper mail get put in a stack on my desk. And there it stays. COTW: Excellent challenge because just today I was noticing that my piles of paperwork at home were looking very disorganized. I will be working to implement a new system this weekend. Thanks Reenee- great question and challenge.

Goal: 15 CSQOTW: Like some I usually tend to open/sort/recycle mail as soon as I get it from the mail box. The "to be filed" papers usually sit in a pile indefinitely COTW: I am hoping that since this weekend is a holiday weekend and the temps here are going to be close to 100 that I will be able to buckle down and sort through some of my piles and start organizing my spare room as I will not want to go outside. I have a file cabinet but I need to set up the folders and actually start putting papers in the file. Today kicks off College Football season here in KY so tonight will probably be a spend as I might go watch the UofL game w/my dad.

Goals: 20 NS/CS, 5 EOD, and we will see what the rest of the days bring. I took my car to the garage this morning at 7:30 for the repairs before inspection. Inspection ran out August 31st but it is inspected. It just doesn't have the stickers on. After the body work is done, my mechanic will just put the stickers on. But that may be a couple of days yet. He took his race car and went to the tracks and this being a holiday week-end, it may be until Tuesday or later before I get the stickers. At least I know it will pass. I drove a car over a year with the inspection outdated and was not caught. I pray I can go a couple of days this time. I just got my Internet back on after 3 days. (It seems like longer). It comes and goes. DS says it is my computer that is messed up. I will just have to wing it. I have some money saved for a new laptop but it is not enough. I hope to have a bigger savings at the end of the year, provided DS and DIL keep working. I will be glad to do the birthday thing if my computer agrees, but if I miss anyone, it wasn't intentional. Now I have to find my list and see who is where. In the past I made gifts for some of you. If you want, I have some gifts made up and I would be glad to send them to you. They may not be the color you had. If I don't have your address you can PM me here. I will find my list and get back to you, IF I CAN. With this system, I never know when I can get on the net.

Goal: Stick to Grocery budget ($400), 15 MOAN, 18 NEO days, 31 No soda days QOTW - I sort the mail as I drive up my driveway (long driveway, I put the car in 1st and putz up the hill. My BIL's mail goes in a pile for when we see him or stop by MIL's house. We've been his mailing address for 2.5 years. Bills and magazines get put in the office, junk mail goes in the trash, and cards get left on the bar in the kitchen. COTW - I've been lazy last month and things have piled up a bit more than usual. PLan for the month - Only eat out 3 times a week, including times with family. So, I figure 12 meals out, leaves 18 NEO days. I'm going to cut soda back out of my life. I weighed myself this morning and weighed 165 pounds. Which is way more than I have weighed any time in my life other than when I was pregnant (and lost all that and then some within 3 months of DS's birth, 13 months ago I weighed 145). I did great working out in August other than the last week in which work just kind of consumed my life and I was so pooped I could only do one thing. So, back on the work out train and possibly do a 5k at the end of the month. We have a wedding October 1st in Minnesota. September is a 3 paycheck month, but it is also car insurance on the Murano month. The hardest part by far will be sticking to the no soda. I've been drinking 2 a day and the last 2 days the first one has come pretty early in the morning. But I made some Chrystal light before i came to work and hopefully that will help. The second hardest thing will be sticking to the grocery budget. We were awful the last 2 months. Like cover your eyes, how the bleep were we that bad. Oh, on random spending for the month, I need to buy DS some new clothes. He has officially outgrown most of his 18 month clothes and even with the help of WIR/YMer Wisconsin Beth his selection of 24 month/2T clothes is pathetic (other than dress clothes, he has stylin dress clothes). There is a consignment sale this weekend and another one in 3 weeks. I'm also going to check out craigslist and see what is listed. We'll probably need quite a few pants because in October we plan on tackeling potty training! Woohoo (not a money saver since we cloth diaper, but it would still be so nice). And finally, proud mommy moment. Last night, I started to pick up a few of DS's toys after Wheel of Fortune was over (typical night time routine, we eat supper, watch Wheel and then DS gets ready for bed). I grabbed a couple and DS walks over and procedes (without any encouragement from me) to pick up his toys and very neatly put them back in the toy box. Then he went and stood by the gate to go back to his room to go to bed. LOL. I can't take credit for that. DH is the neat one in the family.

Goals- 20NS/CS 22 NEO
QOTW: DH usually brings it to me and I try to sort right then and there. 90% ends up in the trash. The other 10% ends up in the same place MidwesternJD's do on top of the file cabinet until I can't find something I need or it comes crashing to the floor.
COTW: I need to go back and file a bunch and then update my utility spreadsheet. I track usage and cost to see if I can identify areas to conserve.
Repost from August thread below.
I'm totally beat today and it is completely my fault. After mini-D's gym class we went to the library and I picked up a couple new books. After mini-D and DH went to bed I started reading and next thing I know it is 2am and mini-D is up after having a dream that one of our dogs ran away with some wolves. It took awhile to get him calmed down and I was still wide awake, it was almost 4am when I finally fell asleep, then DH got up at 5:15 and my alarm went off at 6:30.
Tonight will be a spend and an EO. We going on a hardhat tour of the history museum. They are renovating the 100+ year old mansion that it is housed in and tonight it is open to the public. It is something DH will definitely enjoy after that we will grab a bite to eat somewhere. I've got a buy one ticket get one free coupon for the tour.
Midwestern- Yes sometimes you just have to budget for the expenses that you can't avoid.
Pointy- Way to go meeting your goals.
SES- An extra $250 in your budget that is great. I know you keep your budget tight, so that is a big windfall.
SBCali- Welcome back.
Reenee- Definitely would be interested in seeing the henna tattoo. I think that is the only body art I'd consider since it isn't permanent.
Trying hard to avoid grabbing a coke and a scone from the kitchen. I've had my breakfast. I'm thinking I may have a glass of OJ to help my brain start firing normally.

Muttley- One of my projects for the weekend is go through fall clothes for the consignment sale. I'll let you know what I have in 24M/2T fall/winter play clothes and you can let me know if you'd be interested in them.

Goals: 10 NS days/5 EO days/ 16 WO days
Challenge/QOTW: Funny that this is the challenge this week. I'm always the one that sorts through mail, as I'm the one who knows what the heck is going on with bills, etc. Usually I pile up recyclables right away, but the stuff to deal with and the stuff to file usually get pushed around on the dining room table for a while, or blue tries to help and merges my carefully sorted piles back into one big pile. So we're trying to be better about not letting them pile up on the dining table. We have a new entry cabinet, and yesterday I made a point of putting the mail there and sorting immediately and bringing up stuff to shred and file right away. Hope we can keep it up!! It'd be nice to see our dining room table from time to time!
midwestern - I have an enormous pile to file, too. Surprised my cats haven't scattered it to the wind yet.

We have 3 birthdays this month. Since this "week" is going until the 10th, I will tell you that sapphire62's birthday is the 10th. QOTW; Where is my mail and what is my system? My bills are in a purple folder (what other color is there) hanging right inside the door over my second calendar. When I get the mail, I open the bills and put them in that folder. Then on the first of the month, I pay them. Oh yeah, that is today. Everything else gets thrown in the trash or piled up on other stuff that has pilled up on my flat surfaces. I have so many hot spots that I don't know where to begin to shred or toss. COTW; Right now the floor of my car is my junk designated spot. I get the mail on my way to work and any junk gets tossed on the floor. (Note to self-I need to clean the car out when I get it back this afternoon). I guess I need to develop a different system and get things organized. I bought new folders about 3 months ago but haven't put them to use. I did sort my bank statements and have them, well almost all of them, in a notebook but I want to put dividers in there to keep them separate. My GF's accountant says that once you balance your statement, you can throw the last month's statement out. You ladies in accounting, is that true? If it is, I could do a 57+ fling boogie this weekend since I have today and tomorrow off. I really should get myself a timer and work at something for 15 minutes and see what gets done. I am starting to get hungry so I will get something to eat. If the system lets me, I will be back on later today. If not, I will be back when it does.

dakota - That would be great. I was actually thinking we could use some more 2T t-shirts (short-sleave .. as well as long sleave) as well. So, let me know what you have. I do appreciate it. Thanks' to Beth's package DH went through DS's clothes and moved all the 18 month stuff out of the dresser. It looks very very bare right now. Fortuantely, we do laundry every other day. Oh as for filing paid bills, I use to keep huge piles. But at the beginning of the year I started some of the flylady stuff. Her philosophy is to file it right then, and I have stayed on top of it (as well as reconciling bank statements, rather than being behind by 13 months) and it has been so easy.

Muttley: Where in Minnesota is the wedding? Just curious if it's near us or not 3Cats: I will ask DH for some computer advice tonight and message you. He may have some suggestions that could help your Internet run more smoothly. Dakota: I can sympathize. I decided to finally read the Harry Potter books so I have been reading them one after another. I am about 75% of the way through Order of the Phoenix and I stayed up later than normal reading that. I want to own the books so I can convince DS to read them again (he quit after book 4 years ago). Book 6 Dh ordered used through Amazon and I am hoping it gets here ASAP so I can move right from 5 to 6 but I don't think it will happen.

reposting from August so my numbers are captured. Gotta do better in Sept!
Finally Tally: 7 NSD, 4 CSD
Well that's pathetic. But I have to remember that my Dad came to town (so I bought a few things so we could do house repairs), then unexpectedly my aunt and cousins came for a week (and I bought some food for meals with them) then my Mom came for the fair (and I treated her to ice cream) and finally Wilson ran into a stupid bolt and tore open the skin on his thigh (and I spent $400 getting him fixed up again).
Not to mention I am no longer working for my main source of income and had a few celebratory/sad tacos....
I need to review my calendar for the month and make my new goals. First though I'm picking up my cash for the first 2 week ($40) and meeting a client for coffee. Then, because my whole day got out of whack, I might be picking up some clothes I need for the trip to Florida before visiting sbcalimom ;D

My background: DD2 is somewhat asleep so I'm going to give this a try . I don't remember when I started reading or joined but I know it's been at least since 2007/8. I got myself into a lot of cc debt back in college largely because I had NO idea what CCs really were and no idea how to manage my money. I grew up with a very irresponsible mom who would always say "just charge it" and then when she couldn't pay the bills anymore, she'd just stop. I didn't really get the whole concept that you eventually have to pay the $ back or pay interest forever so I racked up close to $25K. After graduation, I started a full-time mgmt position at Victoria's Secret and grew to absolutely hate it but the debt meant I couldn't leave without another somewhat high paying position secured. That was my wake up call and I started to buckle down to pay stuff off. I got some help from DH's parents who have always been very generous and combined with using all other windfalls, tightening the belt, I was able to get it all paid off by our wedding in 2006. Since then, I'm happy to report we have never carried a balance on our CCs for more than 1 month. DH started his PhD program in 2007 and we moved up to NorCal for that. He got a great funding package his first year and I just transferred to the local office to keep working, often more than 40 hours a week. By living like totally broke students even though we had a pretty good income, we were able to amass some substantial savings. We know have over $45K saved outside of retirement. We did this while also paying off two cars since then. I now work a lot less because we have two sbcalibabies (DD1 is 2.5 and DD2 is 9 weeks old) that I primarily take care of. I've realized recently that my new downfall is things for the girls. They are my main money leak and Target is evil! For my spending fast to work through the end of October, I will have to avoid Target as much as possible and stop buying things for the girls. The good news is that their necessities are covered so that should make it easier since I can just STOP going to buy things rather than hope I can control my impulses once I'm there. Sorry this ended up so long, but that's me !

Goals: 15 NSD, 15 WO days
Okay, I'm only really going to be in town for 22 days this month (due to the Florida trip) and at least 6 of those days I'll have guests. So I'm going to plan on 15 NSD with the rest of my time being controlled spend for the things I've planned with my friend OR vacation spending in Florida.
Other things that don't count against spending: Chiropractic visit, bills, anything from my allowance cash.

GOALS- 25 NS/CS, 1EOQOTW- I can honestly say that my mail- usually gets sorted as soon as I come in. Junk mail with my name on it goes into the shred bin ( see COTW), other anonymous junk goes into the trash, and bills and paperwork go into an obnoxious orange folder marked ACTION in my plastic file tray. I pay most of my bills on payday, except for the one or two stragglers and the auto deducts. I have a trash can right under the writing desk. The shred bin is under the computer desk because I shred certain things when I am done printing. This system has its faults as it is somewhat antiquated, but it works. COTW- Actually shred what's in the shred bin. I am switching my electric bill to an autopay at the beginning of the year that will eliminate the ability to play with that money- it will go out to the utility early. Any extra will be credited. After 2 years the bills have not increased. I also need to make sure I always file everything- I think now that I have switched to a binder instead of folders I will do much better.

MK – From August's thread: Finely chop ½ an onion and a couple of cloves of garlic. Saute in the bottom of a sauce pan with a drizzle of olive oil until the onion is nice and translucent-ish. can of tomatoes, can of tomato sauce, and a dash of tomato paste into the pot. Sprinkle in Italian Herb blend (because buying one container of that is much cheaper than buying everything separate) along with some salt and pepper. Simmer until it's thick. It's not so much a recipe as it is controlled chaos. Pointy – great to see you! Just how long is this list of household and gardening tasks? Sbcali – great to see you too! Good job on the sorting. I haven't even got that far yet. Midwestern – you're a step ahead of me, I don't even take the junk mail out. Sheila – ok, so 3rd person who deals with mail about the same way I do. I don't feel quite as bad anymore. Smokey – Looks like I hit on a subject that a lot of us could use some work on. 3cats – I have my fingers crossed for you. Can you perhaps keep the receipts or estimate from your mechanic in the car so that if you are stopped you can show that work is ongoing and that the problem will soon be resolved? I nearly got a ticket for a broken tail light once, but the officer was nice and I promised to get a temporary fix first thing in the morning, so he just gave me a warning. As for where to start, I usually like to start with the smallest pile or smallest spot. It gives me a sense of accomplishment before tackling anything else. Or I start with the 'obviously that doesn't belong here' stuff, the things that have migrated from the room they belong in to the opposite side of the apartment. Muttleyn – I know that weight creep can be a hard thing to deal with. Just remind yourself that 20 lbs isn't an insurmountable goal. And be very grateful that you didn't gain 100 lbs during your pregnancy like some women do. Dakota – the tour sounds very interesting. What are you reading that kept you up all night? Sounds like my kind of book. (oh wait, any book is my kind of book) redwagon – you mean 'dining room table' isn't a synonym for filing cabinet? Dang it, should have known I had something wrong. sbcali – I can imagine how hard it is to not buy stuff for the girls. After all, little girl stuff is SO CUTE! I don't even have kids and I have a hard time staying out of the baby/toddler section. mizbear - Good for you on going paperless where you can and getting autopay set up.

Goals for September: 20 NS/CS, 15 MOANs, 20 NEOs (Modified and added the bold)
Good afternoon all! I am new to this board but looking for motivation to keep everything in check and this seems to be the place to come! My parents will be here for over a week so I am not sure how it will affect my spending, eating out and exercise but I suppose I need to start some where.
I look forward to learning, being motivated and hearing about all of y'all.
QOTW: I am horrible with mail. Usually I pull it out of the box a couple of times a week, then it sits on the coffee table until I run the stack up to the office. UGH!
COTW: If I get mail, it needs to go upstairs to the office and be sorted immediately!

Thank you for the welcome and reminding me on the bolding!

cleanslate - we're always glad to have fresh blood in the group. As you might have seen, we're starting fresh as a group this month, so I'm sure there will be plenty of gentle reminders about using bold. And updating.

cleanslate: Welcome Jump right on in, ask any questions you may have and hang on for the ride. Don't be discouraged if it takes a little while to get the hang of things. It took me months before I was able to meet my goal. It takes some juggling at first. Muttley: That's way north! My brother lives in Duluth. Two Harbors is a pretty area. Are you driving or flying? I live in the south central part. If you look at the MN River on a map it is kind of in the shape of a "V" I live in the point of the "V".
