OK, I know this is a boring topic, but I'm in the process of organizing my closet, and being male, I lack certain cloths related genes. My first basic question is, is it better to fold polo shirts up and put them on a shelf, or can I hang them up? I used to keep them on a shelf, but they would get all wrinkly, but I'm afraid they will get hanger marks if I hang them up. What are your thoughts?
On another, but related subject, does anyone else think it's strange that on just about every cop show on TV they always go to the closet to figure out what kind of person lives there (control freak, etc)?
If they were to look at my closet they would say disorganized sociopath. What does your closet say about you?

...hang them on good hangers... won't leave marks... ...my closet is somewhat organized, so I might pass muster by the cops...

My closet says disorganized also. It most areas though I am organized. It's just the best place to ''let go" because no one else will see it. It also says that I can't make up my mind what to wear most days.

I bought a bunch of nice wood hangers at Costco when they have brought them in, it's not a usual item. I find the metal hangers don't hold up well with time, they tend to get out of shape.

My closet, like most things, reveals I'm lazy. Things are kind of organized, but there's a giant pile of shirts that need ironing sitting in the shelf.

Hang the polo shirts on the padded hangars as suggested. If you have shelf-space, save that for sweaters/sweatshirts. You can also buy racks or bins to place below the hanging clothes for more storage of things like shoes, belts, etc. And if you wear ties, attach a collapsable tie-rack on one of the inner side-walls of the closet

No ironing in this house ;D There's a reason my dry cleaner loves me! If I can't take it straight out of the dryer to hang/fold - that's where it goes. I think just about any hangers are preferable to the wire ones... has anyone tries those skinny velvety ones (the no-slip)? Are they worth the investment?

Unfortunately I like cotton and it looks much better run over with an iron. And I've gotten pretty good at it, about 3 minutes for a shirt.

...also no ironing in this house... it comes out of the dryer and onto a hanger... ...and a "good" hanger is as good as you can afford... stronger plastics work, wooden ones work, plush covered ones work... in my experience, the proper size of the hanger to the size of the shirt matters, as well as the promptness of hanging them before they cool...

Thank you! I sat down with the builder (he only does one or two a year) and a layout of one of his "kits" and told him what I wanted to do to change it. I love that it's completely customized for me, it doesn't look anything like the kit now

...consider investing in a closet rod near your dryer, too... Oh, I like that idea. I have shelves right next to the dryer for my work clothes since I wear the same type of stuff 4-6 days a week, but the rod would be nice for some of DS's clothes.

I found the wider plastic hangers work as well for shirts/blouses as the wooden ones, and they can usually be bought cheaper and in bulk - like 6 or 10 hangers/pack. They're also good for hanging things like jeans over and won't leave a side-crease across the knee area.

The only things in his dresser are jeans, shorts, undershirts, underwear and socks.

Don't the big puffy hangers take up too much space? I have some of those cheap plastic ones, and a bunch of metal ones. I like the metal ones better, but will see if I can find some better ones for my polos. I also keep an ironing board up in my bedroom all the time, and usually iron one shirt at a time on a as-needed basis. I know ladies, I'm quite a catch, but at least I actually know how to use an iron.

The cheap plastic ones should work fine for the polo's, especially if they get worn fairly regularly. Try one or two before you make an investment in other hangers. BTW: The ironing board belongs in the kitchen.

What does your closet say about you? It says that I'm married & have very few clothes (& an even smaller area to put them).

I was in Eddie Bauer when they were closing down the store and I managed to snag about 50 solid wood hangers for 0.10 each. I tried to go back for more, but they were gone.
I'd love to get rid of all the plastic hangers in my closet, but need to run into another deal like that one.

Blah this thread is reminding me I've been avoiding organizing my closets and putting all the clothes away. I started last week but I just look at it and bury my head in the sand.

My closet looks awesome. Clothes neatly hung. Sweaters neatly folded and stacked on shelves. Shoes lined up neatly. Just don't trip over the 4 laundry baskets of clean clothes that I live out of that are blocking the closet door. And the two nearly empty bureaus.

Yeah, I'm on the "when the laundry basket's empty it's time to do laundry" plan too.
