We had a snow day the day the Challenger exploded.
And I do remember the Superbowl Shuffle!
Remember Goldie Hawn, Woody Harrelson, and Wesley Snipes? playing in the High School football movie the "Wildcats" around the same time? The dance at the end of the movie was similar to the Shuffle

spruby--I can share your frustrations. I can't count how many Educ. students observed in my classroom, in a non-traditional alternative school, who came out and said they were in education just to get the summers off and classes like mine had fewer students to teach. They didn't see that I taught all year around, and that my students had been problem failures in several schools prior to arriving in my class needing hours of special instruction and attention. Within one week I could identify the students who would become teachers and the ones who would walk away from the effort involved, never admitting any of the responsibility for their decisions. I, too, could have influenced many hiring decisions, and perhaps did.

ses - some schools still teach this to education students. The private college I attended had very strict standards for dress, behavior, and participation for students observing in classrooms. My dress code was much, MUCH more strict than the dress code at the school I observed. I also had the benefit of a high school teacher for whom teaching was his THIRD career, and had been very successful in all of his other ventures. He sat high school music kids down and explained how 401ks and compounding interest work!

Morning all -- Yesterday was a NS day. I think I have 4 NS for the month.
Generations -- I'm an X on record. I remember Challenger, mainly b/c I met one of the astronauts just before the launch. I remember the Chicago Bears winning the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl Shuffle, though I would not have put those events together. Having said that, I mostly tend to hang around with people who are other than I. However, one of best buddies at work is 15 years my junior, making him a Gen Y for the record. The accolades and the need for them is truly lost on me. I don't like accolades even when I earn them. I hate walking across the stage in front of a group of people. I don't want a piece of paper, ribbon or trophy. After the first one, been there, done that.
Personal Finance in high school -- In theory, I like. The execution of it I have doubts. I have a friend who will teach this class this year. I hope to peruse the curriculum.
TV in my bedroom -- Might be facing death soon. It hums; I can't tell if it's the TV or Directv. The TV is probably at least 15 years old, so if it goes, it goes. This will make canceling Directv easier. No tv, no need for pay TV. I have a TV in the guest bedroom hooked up to an antenna. I'm thinking I'll live with that for a spell. I could rough it and decide I make too much money to rough it and buy a new TV.

Oh, Sapphire--if you so get a chance to examine the curriculum I, for one, would be fascinated to know what is covered. I would occasionally teach a mini-course on personal finance. It was all by the seat of my pants, well received by the kids, but I always felt I didn't cover all that they needed.
Reenee, I wonder why it is only teachers who seem to be hit with a "professionalism" training? Of course, I think in a lot of areas our entire culture seems to be relaxing down to more "casual" which leaks over to "sloppy" in so many areas that I think people can't or don't learn to read body language or subtle communication skills, as spruby mentioned with her boss's "requests.

SES -- I'll keep you posted. How did you test your students on the knowledge you gave? I think there is good info to give; I just question that in the test taking aspect you frustrate some students doing more harm than good. On some level, I would fail this class. I don't balance any of my 3 checking accts, yet I know how much money is in each account. I've never paid an overdraft fee. I pay my cc in full on time. The few loans I've had, I paid them off early. There are mathematical reasons to prove any point, but so much of personal finance is personal.

DH does teach his Sr's what he can sneak in about personal finance. He usually goes to a check cashing place and rent-a-center and gets the rates that they are currently charging. Then he'll go out to a furniture store and price the same thing as rent-a-center, to show the kids that saving up for something is much less expensive than financing it. For the check cashing places he has them break down their ridiculous yearly interest rate (over 300%) into daily and monthly and figure out what it really costs to use those places. He hopes that at least showing them now what a ripoff those places are will at least make them think twice before going down that road. He has also taken in cc offers we get and has them compare them to see which is really a better deal. But he doesn't really have much time to do this kind of stuff, since the classes aren't on personal finance.
I'm counting yesterday as NS. DH did have to run out and get a part for his car. One of the battery clamps wouldn't hold, but it was $3. I love having a handy husband. He is going to replace the brakes on my car next month, which will save us a nice chunk of change over what it would have cost at a mechanic.

Muttley – interesting you say that about Challenger and Gen X. I distinctly remember it exploding (maybe I wasn’t watching when it happened, although knowing my parents’ interest in the space program I quite possibly was, but I at least remember the aftermath) and I remember having terrifying dreams about being in space and exploding. Of course, I also distinctly remember being in my crib and hating the Winnie the Pooh music box thingy. Would that make me Gen X (born late 1983)? I doubt it. I guess I’m Gen Y?
Start – had to giggle at the velociraptor. Hope Wilson is healing well!
Safety net – I know that if we had to, Blue and I could move in with either of our parents and live on paying a small rent, or that if something catastrophic happened and we needed a loan, they’d be there for us. That said, I don’t EXPECT that, I don’t factor that into my financial decisions. They would be plan x, after we’ve tried a-w.
Okay, so I am, to quote my younger, Massachussetts-dwelling self, “wicked ripshit.” The guy from our insurance company called the church upon whose lot the tree appears to be (the branch of which was dropped on our car during cutting it down), and they said it is a “construction zone” and wasn’t their people. Ummm really? They are the only ones doing construction, so it’s their “zone” and their “people.” Can’t believe they lied to the guy. And now the insurance company won’t help further, since the cost is below our deductible ($800). GRrrrrrr. No idea what I should do now, how to get them to tell me who they hired... my boss flippantly said “Take them to small claims court.” Umm yeah cause I have the money for that. Ugh. So pissed and frustrated.

Yesterday was a big fat spend. It was planned, but I'm still counting it as a spend.
safety net: I too, could fall back on either of my parents if need be. My older brother did fall back on our mother when the base he worked on closed (lost his job) and he wasn't certain what he was going to do. He did not pay rent. Mom paid most of his bills in the beginning, including helping him going back to school for some specialized certs. However, he also did a lot of hard physical labor around her house and when not in school worked doing things like being a janitor at the local train museum (my brother is a computer tech). Since he was born in 73, he's clearly GenX. Some kids of every generation have parents they can fall back on. Some kids of every generation plan to do that, but most don't. Everyone gets out of college wanting to do meaningful work. It takes some longer than others to either find it, or realize that work pays the bills and they can volunteer or donate to get their meaning. Wasn't GenX also supposed to be the "Me" generation, where we didn't think about anything but ourselves and how to get ahead and rich and yadda yadda yadda. So while I think that, in truth, 20 somethings are the same no matter when, if Boomers don't like Gen Yers, then, as their parents, they really only have themselves to blame. (After all, it wasn't the kid who fell off the jungle gym and broke his arm that first decided to sue the city/school/county/whatever. It was the parent.)

Red - It is interesting that you remember it and I don't, because I would have been 4 when it happened.
sapphire - I didn't put the Bears SUperbowl WIn and the Challenger happening so close together until they did the 25th anniversery of both this past year.
At engineering school we were taught how to be professional and how to be presentable. I worked some crazy hours in my career to get jobs done. I've worked until midnight and I've gotten to work at 6am (or earlier). I don't know if that was my schooling or the way I was brought up or what it was.
Red - I don't think it costs more than like $50 to take people to small claims court. You represent yourself in those situations and the filing fee is usually pretty small. I think (never personally done it).

The dress code at school got more lax for both students and teachers as I got older- I remember starting school in the early 80's (I was born in 76) and not being allowed to wear jeans full time until somewhere around 3rd or 4th grade. We were only allowed to wear them on Fridays and half days- although most of the time no one said anything because other schools had dropped the jeans rule at the end of the 70s- including our high school. All of our teachers wore dresses or ties- we may have had one or two ladies that wore slacks, but they wore dressy slacks with silk blouses or suit jackets. Many of the male teachers who graduated during Vietnam when I got into high school wore jeans, shirts and ties or jeans and blazers. But, they conducted themselves in such a way that you rspected them. Someone's mom threw a fit my sophmore year because a first year female teacher wore jeans and a sweater. The other teachers took up for her- if the men could do it- the women could too. I was a little older than 4 Interesting point about accolades- the main things I seek accolades in are music and cooking. Even when I raced, I wasn't after trophies- I just wanted the stupid thing to run right- of course that is a big deal when you have a drunk for your mechanic... start- Glad wilson is feeling better- tell him to watch out for those velociraptors . If wilson wasn't hurt I would have cracked up when you wrote that- my older niece (Miss T) wrote a report on velociraptors last year.

red: If construction was going on, then there were permits. You find out who was doing the work by contacting the city and finding out who had the permit to be doing the work. Buearocracy can be helpful sometimes.
MIL Update: Since you all go through the stress with me, I thought you'd like to know- her total knee replacement surgery is scheduled for Oct 6. Her pre-op appt with the surgeon is scheduled for 9/6. She doesn't know it, but she has an $11k medical fund that should cover all the costs. I'm not certain if we'll pay everything up front out of pocket or pay a portion and then put the rest on a payment plan. The reason for doing a payment plan is that it would leave us enough to put a substantial portion down to then buy her the full set of dentures she desperately needs.
weight loss: so I really stopped tracking MOANs back in March when we lost Smokey, but I've still been eating less (braces) and moving more (dog park almost every day), and starting this weekend, I've been able to remove my engagement and wedding rings without any lotion. I haven't weighed myself in a while, but that should mean that I am back around what I weighed when we got married, which is about 30lbs less than I was when I got braces in Dec.

Sapphire--I never really "tested" in my personal finance miniclass. I set it up like a game of Life or Monopoly or even Oregon Trail. I would teach whatever concept I planned to cover(as does Dakota's DH), then two or three times a week they would have to draw a "scenario" at random from a basket that would affect their on going "financial life folder." The scenarios would cover anything from a bank overdraft, traffic fines, bonus overtime pay, an unexpected pregnancy, trying to buy a house or car, finding insurance, setting up a 401k and/or IRA, how to read a bank statement and a retirement account statement... The "test" would be how their financial life folder ended up. At the end of the class they had to do a class presentation in what they did right and wrong and then a class critique. My classes were all relatively small, 10-15 students, and we did a lot of cooperative learning projects so the presentations and critiques were never stressful. The only stress, looking back, was the competition to get in the class since I did not do it on a regular basis.

Forgive me if any of these comments are too far out of date: startsmart - I can empathize with worrying about your parents and their job situation. My folks went through something similar during the last recession in the mid-90s. My father wound up taking work with a landscape company doing yard and lawn maintenance. The upside was he lost 30 pounds. Mom took a part time job at a local grocery store. We never starved, always had utilities and they didn't loose the house. In some ways I think our parents are better equipped mentally to handle such things - since their parents lived through the depression and passed a lot of their thrifty concepts onto their kids. I hope Wilson is feeling better mizbear - Congratulations on second place! Sorry about the ankle though. I once tore ligaments in my ankle - you get to the point where you almost wish it had been a bone - would heal faster. As for the SIL .. I recommend changing the locks, motion sensors attached to near lethal electric shocks and adopting a pet Anaconda ... think she would get the message then?? redwagon - you could send me a bunch of those cucumbers ... OR .., I can teach you how to make pickles reenee - Make the calendar!! ... and find some midway points where you get a little reward for not strangling a co-worker or customer spruby - sorry to hear about your fur baby as well. SES - Didn't you just know that eventually someone would try to paint Mr. Rogers as the bad guy?? ... BOL .... I have no problem telling little kids they are special, smart, talented and unique ... just not that they are entitled to anything from other people because of it. *And then I fall over in a dead faint at all the ladies who were born in, or AFTER the year I graduated high school !!!!*Boy I feel old. Technically I am categorized as a "Baby Boomer" ... but never felt part of that group since I was still feeling my way while they were already married, with kids and a mortgage. But I am so glad to see younger women getting a handle on their finances earlier in life than I did. Muttley - My condolences on the loss of your grandmother. Challenger - I was in college and sleeping in that day as it was my one day each week when I didn't have classes until 10 am. My mother came in and woke me up to tell me. For me and others my age our pivotal moments would be the Eruption of Mount St. Helens, Regan being shot, Iranian hostages, Lennon being killed, Watergate, Nixon's resignation, Vietnam and wearing POW/MIA bracelets, The Bicentennial and the first moon walk. And yes, I remember watching the last item on television - during a hot July morning as the images were re-broadcast since it had been really late at night when they actually hit the surface). I also remember the tension of the Apollo 13 mission. Groups of grade school kids crowded into rooms watching huge cathode tube television sets .. and several teachers quietly crying or biting their lips and holding hands as we waited to see if they would make it back or be lost forever.

SPeaking of feelng old... I still hold a couple track and field records at my high school. One i set my junior year and the other I set my senior year. My dad was out working one day and one the jobs he met a high schooler wearing a Track and Field t-shirt. So, he asks her about it and she's going to be a junior at my alma mater and yes she competes in the events that I hold the records in and my dad says oh yeah I think my daughter holds those records and she was all in awe and all I'm getting close I should break them this year. So, my dad is telling me about this and all of a sudden we realize she was not even in school when I set those records!!!! Seriously, I'm not that old yet, am I? LOL. Anyway, it is past time someone broke them, so I hope she does, but I just about groaned when I realized she wasn't even in kindergarden when I set the one record, let alone thinking about breaking it some day.

Shanen - COngrats on the weight loss. THat is outstanding.
So emtertaining story from this weekend. Saturday morning I was awake at 5:30. I was planning on going for a job/walk if I woke up early. So, about 10 minutes to 6, I got outside and I jog up the hospital to stretch and then it got light enough to hit the old RR trail and I'm listening to MP3 player and I'm like I'll run to 2 songs. Then it became 3 then it was oh there is the bridge up ahead, I'll turn around at the bridge. About that time I started getting a blister on my foot (well started feeling it), but I jog through it. Actually, I was walking the first minute of each song and then running to the end of the song. So, I get done with the trail and go back to the hotel and grab a quick shower. Later in the day, I'm telling my dad and uncle how far I went and we realized I just ran the better part of 3.5 miles!! Woohoo, go me. I was feeling pretty good, still had the blister (and the shoes that were giving me the blister on). As we left the hospital my mom and dad were going for a walk down the trail. So, DH and I decide to take DS for a walk down it with them. DS basically ran the first 1/2 mile, BTW. Then he got rides. But we walk down to the bridge ( a mile down the path). But with the blister I was favoring my left side and my hips are kind of out of wack and I was so stiff and sore by the end. Not to mention that I carried DS about a half mile of that trip. So, can I get double MOAN credit for Saturday? Or maybe triple MOAN credit? I got on the elliptical last night and I'll run my driveway tonight (hopefully).

Oh, I knew there was something else I wanted to mention .....
I finally have the arrival information for both of my new students. Again, one is from Finland and the other is from Ecuador.
Good News: They are both arriving on the same day, Wednesday, August 24th so I only have to make one trip on Friday to get them both registered for classes.
Bad News: And just my luck ... one is landing at 11:20 AM and the other one is arriving at 10:20 PM.
So I will need to leave Lowell at 10:00 am, drive the 27 or so miles to Logan Airport, pay an outrageous amount for parking then drive back home. Only to have to repeat the process at 09:00 pm.
And I see no reason WHY the second kid is going to be so late .... except they have her on a 6.5 hour layover in Wash DC!!!! Honestly, who books these flights?

Just Popping in to say Hi! I had led my first training today and it went well. I feel like I live my life twice; Once in my head and then in reality and more times than not they are totally different! Oh-Well-I was able to complete all of my packet information and make a journal for each Table Leader and I felt like I the overall training went well. First actual MOMs meeting will be next Tuesday!
Spending: I feel like we are a little out of control right now. Last week went so well, we managed NSD, stuck to our meal planning and this week with me being so busy we chucked all that out the window. PLUS, DH promises DS a frosty from Wendy's if he gets a few good hits at practice and runs hard at the end when they do their sprints. This of course leads to ordering off of the $0.99 menu which leads to a SPEND DAY! Yesterday our kids were especially hungry. They ate a regular dinner and then a full meal again after practice. Still trying to work that out.
I'll have to catch up later. Happy No Spending!

thank you guys for your advice! I've called the church myself and was super polite, and am waiting for the priest to call me back tomorrow. I'll also check with the town tomorrow, as well! At least there's something I can do!
honey - I would gladly take your pickle prowess! I don't eat them, but blue does, so he can make them lol. But there are so many recipes online!! Bringing 3 cukes and a bunch of tomatoes to SIL tonight. Visiting our niece and nephew for the first time in a month - been so busy!
Okay, gotta run!! I'll be back tomorrow and read the last few posts more thoroughly. but thanks again!!

Well, I am picking up a new to me fridge tomorrow and could use some advice.
It's coming from my aunt's rental house which was trashed by the last renter. I mean, trashed. I checked it out and it works but the food inside is bad (moldy) and I want to get it cleaned up before moving it tomorrow.
So far the plan is to go over tonight while there's still light out, don a mask and gloves and empty it. I'm bringing trash bags, a trash can and planning on dumping everything.
Then I plan to pull out the shelves and baskets to clean at home tonight and cleaning the inside.
What's the best way to clean the inside?
I can leave the doors open tonight so it airs out a little but while it's in that house it's not going to get much better.
Tomorrow we can move it to MY house and let it air out for a few hours but I don't know the best way to clean it tonight.
So far i have a bucket for water, a huge bag of baking soda, scrubbing tools and spray bottles that I can fill with a bleach mixture.
Honey, ladies, help!
p.s. this is a blessing because my $40 fridge is going out and the seal is broken so ants can get into the freezer so a nice, working fridge/freezer is great, as long as the current mold can be dealt with so it doesn't make me sick!

Day 1: I started painting the bed room. I am painting the room so I can pay some one to come in and put down a wood floor. I was actually excited to get started. No that's not right I was actually excited to think I could finally get this done. One wall painted and I was a happy camper. It will dry tonight and a second coat tomorrow and I'm on my way. I was sitting in the chair admiring my first coat and I looked down at the 30+ year base board. With a sadden heart I realized when I finally get the room painted I will need to stain some new base boards to put on the 30+ year old carpet with speed bumps. So my mind started wandering a little bit more. Why pay someone to put down a real wood floor down? After all I've put down a Pergo floor so I have the basic skills. How hard can it be? The Internet will tell me how to do it. The Home D. people said you could do a Per go floor in a weekend. Weekend project my azz. A real wood floor can't be that much harder. I really don't like to use the electric saw. But I CAN do it. I don't want to. I could do it and save some money. Paying some to do the floor means, in theory, it would get done faster than I would do it. If there is anything I have learned with home improvement projects, it's that is only a theory that they are faster than I am. How many time has someone come to do a project and I never see them again for months! I am stuck living in a mess! All this because I put one coat of pain on the wall. What was I thinking?!! Anyone out there put down a real wood floor? Think I'll call it a day on the painting. I'm exhausted. 10 NS 6 CS 6 MOAN

Honey - I guarantee that with your 2nd kid they were thinking - oh look the flight is $20 cheaper - let's do it!
Mizbear - I forgot to comment on your torn ligament - like Honey I have done that as well (stepping off a curb) - man that hurts and is worse than a broken one. Make sure you get exercises to rehab the ankle and do them all - it makes a huge difference (says the person who had no health insurance and didn't get rehab when it happened)
Shan - good luck with MIL surgery - just free advice - don't let ANYONE know she has that money - when the bill comes - call and ask about payment arrangements - at the end ask "if there is someway I could come up with [60%] of bill in one payment - would you be willing to settle for that?" If they say yes or counter - say thank you - let me see what we can do because of all the other bills and call them back the next week. Medical care is marked way up in the hopes that after all the different reimbursement rates from different patients' insurance, self pay, etc the doc/group makes money. It is a bit like buying a car - worth a shot at negotiating.

omg, the fridge was so disgusting I had on a mask that filtered the air and it was still sickening. I didn't even want to touch my own gloves when I was done. 3 bags of trash now sitting outside rotting. Moved the shelves and baskets back to my house where they're sitting in the kiddie pool getting a bleach bath. I sprayed the inside good with bleach/water mix but I couldn't stand the smell much longer. Tomorrow I should be able to scrub down the walls again with bleach/water and sop up the junk in the bottom with towels. Then haul it home where I may leave it in the garage, open, to air out for a few weeks. It's that bad. So bad in the middle of it I thought "what's $1,000 on a new fridge if I never have to touch that again?"

Update: 8 NS days and 3 CS days Start -- Just a warning. The mold and or liquid may have seeped into the lining of the fridge. If that has happened it would be best to discard the item. The entire city had this problem after Katrina. I had to discard both the fridge and freezer due to the smell (seafood in both + no electricity for weeks = stinky mess). One of the most common sights in NO after Katrina was one duct-taped fridge after another lining the streets. Many had interesting messages painted on them.

start- Good luck. At least once you get it home you can hose it out.
muttley- I remember President Reagan and Lennon getting shot. I was watching TV (I did a lot of that as a kid) when President Reagan and SoS Baker were shot. I don't remember what I was doing when John Lennon was shot, but I do remember my father was being a jerk about it- and then he wanted to blame it on Yoko Ono. I knew who the Beatles were and I was concerned in a small child's way- "Were the BeeGees next? Was someone going to shoot the Oak Ridge Boys?" I didn't understand the gravity of it all. Was Terry... I can't think of his name- he was held hostage for like 7 years- was he one of the Iranian hostages? I remember the hijackings and the Lockerbie? bombing. My uncle was serving in Germany and had a cash fund to get his family out of Europe on a plane in case of an emergency. He decided to stop reupping as soon as he could after Lockerbie.
I was talking to someone I ran cross country with- this year is the 20th anniversary of our regional trophy. In 2 years will be our 20th reunion. Doesn't seem like it could be that long ago. And I think the only track record I hold is most times on crutches in one season.
Yes- I am doing all of my exercises- I find out tomorrow if the doc is making me stay in the boot or letting me put on the air cast.

Moneysquirrel--Don't forget go-go boots, Twiggy, the introduction of the scandolous mini-skirt and kneeling on the floor for the principal to see if your skirt was long enough, the first Mustang from Ford and 20c/gal gasoline. And the biggest of all WOODSTOCK and flower power!

lol, remember the best thing about a trip down memory lane is you can still afford the fuel!
I've got a phone interview this morning (yay!) and my parents coming to town. Need to pick up the fridge and clean it out. Plus the county fair starts tonight.
