Hello Everyone. Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month.
CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) MOAN: Moving our a$$ Now aka exercising NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Getting Nitzed is referring to when you have a long post and MSN cuts you off so its in two posts instead one. Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DH
For a while I was doing a Question of the Week. One week my question was "How has this thread changed your habits? What tangible benefits have you seen by being a member? I know we occassionally get someone on here that just doesn't get the concept of no spend is so much more then no spending 10 days to blow everything on day 11."
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

*looks around the emptiness* wow, I'm the first one here, besides MK, of course.
My calendar is on the wall. I'm embarassed to say that even after 2 years here, I still struggle to track my NSDs for an entire month. So I'm going to just go for a week. 8/1-8/6. If I can make it that far, then I'll go again. It's still overwhelming, even after all this time.
I'm proud to say that I did some hounding/couponing this morning and stuck to my $20 OOP limit. And I satisfied my desire to start stockpiling school supplies. I always loved August because I loved getting all the wonderful, new, fresh school supplies. Now it helps remind me that I AM going back to school, and it's happening SOON. ;D

Thanks MK for a new month. If only I could not spend. LOL. Glad that DS1 enjoyed his time on the aqua trampoline. I googled to see what one looks like.
reenee -- Don't feel embarrassed that you have trouble tracking. You are not alone my friend. I do like your idea of tracking one week at a time; baby steps.
moneysquirrel -- I hope your first day back at school goes well. It seems like the prior school year just ended. One less month of summer vacation is noticeable to me and I have nothing to do with school.
SES -- Verbal agreement has been reached on the debt ceiling. Now on for the 2012 budget fight. It never ends. On an aside, DC had the hottest July ever. We also set records 8 days for the low temps we reached at night. I'm thinking most of these were 80+ degree nights. Yikes.

I'm here for August 20 NS/CS days and 22 NEO
Reposted from July....
Question for our wise women. Last night I was cleaning out the pantry and asked DH to soak my terra cotta brown sugar bear. I wasn't watching what he was doing and he soaked it in the container we use to thaw vac sealed frozen meat. It does get washed, but it kind was makes me leery of putting it in direct contact with brown sugar. Is there a way to sanitize it or do I need a new one?
FP- I have a pretty picky DH so I have to choose new recipes wisely. I usually will go through a cookbook or magazine and flag recipes I like, then he lets me know which of those he would be willing to try. Once we have a recipe we both like, i put it on a recipe card and it goes to the box, so that when I'm menu planning I have different things to choose from. Also try some Rachel Ray recipes, while they don't actually take 30 mins, they usually are pretty easy to do.

dakota- do you leave the vac seals closed when thawing? If so, I would just rinse and re-do. But, there are sanitization processes for terra cotta. Unfortunately the ones I have found are for unglazed terra cotta garden pots. I definitely would be leary of using te 1:10 bleach solution on it and then putting sugar in it again. But that's me. Try ehow that's where I found my info.
I have to keep my budget super tight now. I am tired of the drama here. I need to finish paying my layaway and then I am going to see how fast I can get my car and tuition paid off. I have 2 talent shows I am supposed to be in this month, but I have no EO money, no extra gas money, no extra S money- nothing. Oh yeah - and I have my nieces pretty much all month unless the new sitter works out because ex-SIL had to fire the other one for going after my 12yo niece with a knife (and she didn't file charges). If I had the money and the space- I would apply for custody of the kids.

I am in for August and super excited. I think the accountability of this group will really help. It will be a tough month because we are leaving for Hawaii on the 5th and coming back on the 10th. My goals for this month are 15 NS, 20 NEO, and 20 MOANs. It might be a little ambitious for a first month, but I do better with bigger goals.

Oh I forgot to add I get to go see HP tonight! DH & I wanted to go one night before DH starts back to school and tonight was the only night this week that worked for us. We are going to a Matinee (Starts at 5:50, but still matinee prices), plus we have GC for that theater chain, so hopefully it will be an NS anyway.

August Goal: 14 NS + 12 CS = 26 This week is going to be a strange one for me. DH gets on a plane tomorrow morning and is gone until next Monday. Normally, that would mean that I live on soup, sandwhiches and mac and cheese for a week. But, DC returns tomorrow afternoon and then her BFF joins us on Wednesday. That means I need to feed not just me, but two 19y/o girls. I'm actually going to be responsible for making dinner for a whole week! (Okay, I can probably get them to make dinner one or two nights, but still.) I haven't had to do that since beofre DH and I got married, 8 years ago. My plan is to sit down with DC tomorrow and come up with a meal plan based on what she and BFF like then go grocery shopping. We'll have frozen pizza tomorrow, I'm thinking two nights worth of tacos/quesadilla type, a casserole that can last two nights, and then maybe one night of chicken & rice and one night quickie pasta salad. If I do that, the only things I should need to buy are tomatos/lettuce for the tacos, a can of diced tomatos for the casserole, and maybe a little bit of fresh baby spinach for the pasta salad (if the girls will eat it). I guess I also need to make sure there's enough mac and cheese and sandwhich stuff in the house so that they eat lunch. We stocked up on cereal this weekend, so should be good for breakfast.
In addition, my vacation blitz starts at the end of this month. Our wedding anniversary is Aug 30. My mother will be with us Aug 28-Sept 3. She wants to drive out to the coast for a couple days (she'll pay for the hotel and such), and then she intends to come back and clean my house so that its clean for when my father comes to visit a week and a half later. (Mind you, they've been divorced for over 20 years, but she wants to make sure my house is clean for his visit.)
We have a trip to the Ren Faire planned for the weekend of Aug 13. Tickets are already paid for. DH typically buys me an anniversary gift there. We lose DC probably Sunday Aug 21. She may not take all of her stuff with her, but we'll be driving down to Portland for Roller Derby Regionals at the end of Sept, and will bring whatever she left behind. Which reminds me that I need to buy derby passes and book the hotel room. This has been saved for, and while it will be put on the credit cards, it will all be paid off with money set aside specifically for this event.
It's a ways a way, but Portland area ladies, if we want to try and do a quick lunch (or breakfast) meet up, I should be in town Sept 23-25.

Welcome to August ladies! Glad to see so many old friends here and the new folks like financialpeace! mk- thanks for starting the new thread dakota- I love getting to see movies for the matinee price goals - let's say 15 this month, I've got a LOT going on. August overview: this weekend Dad visits, the following week my client is out of town on a trip (which always means more work for me), then the county fair and my mom will probably visit, then my friend from Nevada is coming for a long weekend. Throughout the month I need to launch my website, get my business incorporation started and get ready for my conference at the end of September. Miami- I've booked my flights ($312), the rental car and the expensive hotel room for 3 nights. Thankfully I've found one roommate to share the room and we're both open to having a second person to cut costs. I'll need to confirm three more nights in 3 other cities since I'm tacking on a vacation to the end of the conference. AAA gave me some great maps and planning guides and I picked up some books at the library. Funny enough I just found my Scotland binder that had 2 weeks worth of planning in it - all of our reservations, maps, flights, attractions... ah memories! I should archive all of that now that the trip is done. And if when I go back to Scotland I want to spend a month on the Isle of Harris Great. Now I'm going to be day dreaming about men in kilts all morning

Craziness on Monday MorningOkay, I just had to share this because WOW what a morning I've had in under an hour. A colleague wants to discuss her new book idea with me and wrote "it would help me enormously to hear your story & learn what kinds of topics you personally think would be helpful to cover in a book" about personal finance for women. Yikes! Exciting and thrilling and a new book! She's already written 3 so good chance this one gets published as well. Then, a response to another email I wrote from Judy Blume! Love her and her books and when I was doing some research on the Florida Keys I remembered that she lived there and sent her a quick email. And she personally wrote back! Now I feel like a giddy 8 year old although when I was 8 I never wrote to authors... And yay, a quick visit this morning from sbcalimom & DD2

I am going to try for 29/31 NSD/CSD and 1 SD and 1 EOD. The operative word being "try". I just got the notice that my car insurance is due in September so I will have to make sure that is in the account. My cat is just fine this morning. I don't see the tooth but I haven't checked her mouth yet either. I will wait and see what happens.

I FINALLY for the first tim ever didn't lose track of the NS/CS days. I was traveling a lot in July and had the money saved so it didn't come out of monthly bills so I considered it a NS since it didn't effect my monthly budget. Last month I had 20 NS 10 CS.
My August goal is a least 15 NS and the rest CS. and at leass 8 MOANS. I always get school supplies to donate so I might need a few more CS days so I can catch the stuff on sale.

THIS PRETTY MUCH SUMS UP KANSA THESE DAYS
Dear Diary,Just moved to Kansas ! Now this is a state that knows how to live!!Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I'vefinally found my home. I love it here. June 14th:Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in anair-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to seethe sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper. June 30th:Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus androcks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Anotherscorcher today, but I love it here. July 10th:The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used tothis kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting usedto the heat is taking longer than I expected. July 15th:Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of mybody. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lessonthough. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this. July 20th:I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning.By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen upto the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The carnow smells like Kibbles and Shits. I learned my lesson though. No morepets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again. July 25th:The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hotas hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairmancharged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts. July 30th:Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and Ican't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here? Aug. 4th:Its 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state. Aug. 8th:If another wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going tostrangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator isboiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!! Aug. 9th:Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on theseats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to theseat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs andass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat. Aug 10th:The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hotand sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do shit for 2 damn monthsand the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it everrain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worthof cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live inthis damn heat. Aug. 14th:Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot tocrack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. Theinstaller came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for youtoday?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. FreakingKansas. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Willwrite later to let you know how the trial goes. (((and this is day 30 of a 100 or above with the next 7 days looking thesame. We were 105 yest and 106 the next few days.)))

July Update27 Controlled Spends 29 NEO[/b] I was actually feeling rather out of control last month and did not think I had done a good job of staying in budget. However when I finally plugged all my notes and receipts into my spreadsheet I was rather surprised at how well I did. I did have a few bills I needed to play "catch-up" with now that the girls are gone which is why I had some days I went over my budgeted amount. 3cats - Can you try to get the kitty to the vets just in case? I would be concerned that if she has a tooth that is abscessing it may just get worse. dakota - My terra cotta sugar bears are unglazed and I will assume your's are also. If you are concerned about germs you can set the bear into the oven next time you have it on. 30-40 minutes at 300 degrees or above will be enough to kill any possible pathogens. Let the terra cotta cool overnight on the counter then re-soak it, let it dry to the touch and use again. financialpeace - If you would like some real time examples of weekly cooking and re-using of the same I have a sample week's meal plan here: honeylioness.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=frugal&action=display&thread=65And if you check out the Food section on my home page, there are quick and easy recipes from my kitchen and other's on the board. I have also included information about cuts of meat and substitutions you can make for common ingredients you may run out of. honeylioness.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=foodLadies, I know my presence here has been rather inconsistent the last couple of months. Know that it is not you or anything anyone has said - I am just struggling through a major depressive episode. I get these every two years or so - and right now it feels as though everything just caught up with me. I haven't been posting much because I was afraid they would either be incredibly hostile or maudlin. I will be around as I can and feel able to contribute in a constructive manner.

honey -- hugs to you!!!! Don't stay gone too long; miss your wit. kcgal -- too funny. Yes the 90s are a relief. Two summers of oppressive heat and I like the heat. . I still don't care to ever see snow outside my house again; or temps below 60 for that matter.

Honey: feel better soon. Depression is nothing to mess with.
So DSIS told DD she couldn't spend the night at her house until she was potty trained during the day. So Friday DD stops using diapers and is in underwear. She has only had one accident and I have to FIGHT with her to wear diapers at night, which she does still need. Only problem is she hasn't pooped so I am worried about that. ARG! She tends to run on the constipated side so just don't want her to have more problems but I do give her fiber every day.
mizbear: saw your post on another thread, good luck getting the scholarship!
kcgal: I haven't seen that one, reminds me of the one they have for snowy states LOL.
3cats: How are you doing?
Looks like DF has a temp job. That will help for a bit, although it is for $11.60 an hour so things will be very tight here. Just crazy this job market I tell ya. Should anywhere from 1-3 months. I am really hoping the job through my BIL's company comes through that will pay lots more and be much better.

I'm back in for August. I hope that with the return to work and the lack of time to do as much "looking" that the NS days may increase. sapphire -- 1st day back was good. Working with limited number of students for a few days, then a couple of days to get my classroom organized. Next week is all meetings . I have no idea when classes actually begin but by then I will be ready for a regular schedule. kcgal -- that could be the story down here as well. Heat index was up to 110+ today. We have had a bit of rain which has kept the temps down for a while -- then it just steams back up. Dakota -- I went to the Sunday morning viewing of HP yesterday. Matinee prices and about 90% of the audience was adults. MK -- amazing what a little bribery will do. Did DS#1 finish the book?

honey- HUGS. If you need to vent, you know where to find me. I know I can come off a little off-the-wall sometimes being bipolar. kcgal- You can have a spot in my cell. There's no bail money here. mk- Thanks. I am praying hard for this scholarship.
I am trying as hard as I can for as many NS as I can. 1/? NS Today.

Back from vacation #1 and in for the month. August goal: 31CSD/NSD; 10 NEO; and 10 MOANs
We were in San Antonio TX - just horribly hot. And because the universe likes to laugh at me - not 12 hours after I told DH no way could we move to TX for a job - I got a little nibble from TX. Might turn into nothing - but fingers crossed!
kcgal - DC even fits that this summer - this is the worst.
Honey - hugs - I understand we're here when you are ready
Anyone read "Quitter"? It is about quitting your "job" for your "dream". Very interesting - lots to think about.
Hope everyone is hanging in there OK.

Spurdy - LOL on the Texas thing. They have been hit so hard with the heat and drought this year. mk - Too funny about your DD. I hope your DH gets a better job, but glad he has something for now. Honey - Hugs. August Preview - Only major thing is my Grandma's 90th Birthday party. My mom has already reserved the hotel rooms, but I should probably suck it up and be an adult and pay for our rooms ourselves. DH had a tooth pulled today at the dentist. He goes back next week for a follow up. Not overly expensive, so that is good. He has a small survey project on Saturday to do and he talked to his old boss again and made it clear that he would not work 8 to 5 M-F, but he would be willing to work 7p to 11 or 8 to midnight or so. His old boss thought about it and said that might work. They still are planning to sit down and talk at some point. They really need to talk money because I think they are talking too low of a $$$ amount per hour even if DH is an employee and not a contractor (like he is now). The car would get twice as many miles on it, but that wouldn't be too bad since it already has 170k miles. We hope to replace it in 2 years, but right now can't add anything to the replacement fund. Pretty much everything DH takes home would go into savings. Retirement, car, and rebuilding general savings (which is very much needed if we are going to have another child - still undecided at this point). Anyway, I'm rambling. Today was a spend day. DH went to the dentist. I got gas, went to the grocery store (didn't get much but got some necessary things so I can actually cook this week, and picked up some pork chops at a decent price to put in the freezer so I'm not looking in my freezer thinking all I can cook is chicken), and went out to eat for lunch. DH still spent more.

Today was a NSD, I just realized it! Brought my lunch and DH cooked pizza for dinner. Didn't even have to stop for gas. This is a 3-payday month, but it is also the month DH's tuition is due and my quarterly SL is due. So we may come out ahead, but it will be a battle Aiming for 24 NEO (work lunches are my downfall) and 28 NSD/CSD (planned and budgeted spending only - gas, groceries, etc.) So far - 1 NEO, 1 NSD.

I had a poor start to the month . Spray tan for my vacation followed by McDonalds. Bad me. Tomorrow should be a NS and NEO day. Honey - Thanks for those links. They are very helpful. Mittenkitten - That is exactly how my DH got potty trained, but it was his grandparents that provided the incentive.

today was a NSD - I'm tracking on my google calendar since I see that all the freakin' time!
I'll be going through my receipts tomorrow to get everything on the calendar for July.
Also tomorrow: sending in a $5 rebate for paint, sending in my alarm bill and scanning a crap load of invoices from earlier this year. I will be SO happy when everyone switches over to electronic statements!
Until then, scan, organize and archive for my accountant. Thankfully I get to take a percentage of my mortgage, taxes, gas, electricity, water, trash and alarm service because of my business. Every little bit helps!
Also in the name of free money I have two coupons for a free pound of produce at the Farmer's Market in August and a buy one get one free coffee at my favorite place in town. I love free....

1 NSD/CSD, 0 SD, 0 EOD. I took the cat to the vet and she has an immune problem. Her body is telling her system that her lips are a foreign substance and her system is attacking them. She got a shot of steroids and will be fine in a month. That is what the vet says. I called them and they had an opening at 2 pm. My call was at 1:50 pm. I was dressed and I had just gotten her in the crate for transport. The cost was $39 which was budgeted for. So far this year I have had to take 2 of my 3 cats to the vet and the cost each time was below $40, so I am happy. He said that if it should happen again all she needs is a shot. The tech that was helping him today says her cat goes through this same disease every 2 to 3 years. The only cat that has not seen the vet yet is the oldest, 17. The only problem I have with her is she hates to be brushed and she needs it bad. Or is it "badly".

Potty Training: Hey whatever works. We will see how DS#2 goes. Day Treatment can now get him in the room and flush the potty and even have him sit on the potty. He wigged out when I tried to sit him on it. Baby steps.
moneysquirrel: He finished it. I couldn't get him to put it down. He lost it for a day and had a fit (it fell behind the couch) I just picked up the second book in the series from the library. May need to wait for him to read the other books I have for him first or they won't get read.
DD went to bed well, better then I thought she would. Tomorrow we are going to the Children's museum after swimming lessons.
Oh and I did pretty well, spent less then $1.50 today!

3cats - if your kitty is likely to have another episode, is it possible to purchase the medication and have it on hand to give treatment rather than paying for a vet visit? Or have a standing prescription at the vet pharmacy? I know giving shots is scary (for the people, and sometimes the animal too), but it could save you a considerable amount of money if this becomes a regular occurrence. A vet who works with farm animals as well as house pets may be more likely to offer or agree to a home treatment rather than a visit each time.
