east coast ladies - stay safe! 3cats - If you're around, I'm keeping you in my prayers too. It looks like you're well inland, but I'm sure you'll have some nasty weather anyway. Stay safe. Startsmart - I've now taken to laying down when talking to you or reading anything you type. Because you've had me falling off my chair laughing way too much lately!! So far it looks like you are not in need of peanuts.

smart; I love it. I needed a laugh. I just got the estimate for my car, $350 plus inspection. But both mechanics say that my car should last another 50 to 75 thousand miles. That is if the body holds up. I only put 7 to 10 thousand on it in a year because I don't go any where. That will give me enough time to save for a new-to-me car, unless both DS and DIL lose their jobs and I have to take over the 2 utilities that they pay. So far things are going as planned and looking up. I am waiting for Irene to show up. I haven't been in a storm for years, at least since the late 50's. I take that back. In '72 there was one that came about 2-4 weeks before DS was born. I am prepared though. I have water, candles, batteries, food, and lanterns. The only thing I don't have is heat. I don't think we will need it, though. Time for bed.

reeneejune; I have been thinking about you lately. How are you doing? No, the last big storm that hit near me was in '72 so I am not worried. We are not near any water that we have to worry about. The only tree that MIGHT hurt my place is not that big so the wind does not have me worried either. Since we moved here, the electric hasn't been off more than a few hours because we are located between 2 stations so when one goes out, the other comes on.

reenee you flatter me so. One of my new mottos is "I just don't want to spend time with people who don't find me hilarious" I worked on spray painting another set of door knobs tonight. So exciting to see how pretty they are! I posted details on the blog tonight (my friend Kelly) and I can update again tomorrow when I put the knobs back on. It's the little things that thrill me.... Good lucky riding out the hurricane east coast peeps!

Start, I have a question for you. If you have a project that has good wood on it and you like the grain of the wood, would you paint it or stain it? The piece I have is sanded and looks good the way it is, but it needs stained or painted. I don't know what to do with it. I have the stain and the paint for it. I just need to do it.

3cats - Other than some mental blocks I've had to work through this summer, things are going well. I have 63 days left until my student loan is paid off, I'm dating a new Mr. Potential that *gasp* has a good job and treats me well, and I'm making plans to start classes in the spring. I'm almost there! and I'd stain the wood if it looks good. Stain tends to accentuate the grain of the wood where paint conceals it. And if you want it shiny, a nice coat of varnish will really make it eye-grabbing! start - That is all.

3cats- if the wood color is pretty uniform then you can stain it darker, if it's uneven in color then you'll want to paint it. If the wood grain is nice then staining could be awesome but it all depends on what you prefer.
My wood doors have a grain but I don't like the dark doors since I have dark colored paint on the walls. So all my trim is high glossy white, the baseboards and doors especially.
One of my ongoing projects is decorating my side yard. I want to put down sod and decorate the edges with lots of pots of flowers, make it really bright and cheerful. So at walmart last night I found small pots for $1 each and even 4 matching plastic cups for $1. I'm going to create the drainage holes and try to rig the flower put up to a soaker hose. Maybe by next summer I'll have the rain barrels set up and the faucet on the bottom for the soaker hose.

I wasn't very good at tracking this week... I believe I am at 21 NSD/CSD and 10 EOD Today was an unplanned spend, but I think a good one. MIL and GMIL came over and we went antiquing. Bought a crystal decanter, a gavel (woo!), 6 paperbacks, and 2 small glass jars for $8. There was a really old wooden trunk (it reminded me of a treasure chest) at the antique store for $50... I told DH I'm going back next Saturday and if it's still there, I want it! Getting ready to go to the grocery store. I'm over our food budget by $13, so hoping to keep it as low as I can.

Hey I am at 23/25 NSD but I have gone over my allowed allowance this month. I bought a groupon for $35 for a massage. I only had $12 left in spending money. However I got $2.10 back from ebates (6%) and a 5 groupon reward that I know I'll use. I will be using up most of my spending money for next month to make up for it. Reenee, I'm glad dating New Guy is going well. I hope you are having fun.

Hope all is still well with the Easterners.
Been sick didn't even turn my computer on on Friday. Today running at about 60 percent. Looks like DF is going down and the kitchen is a big pit. Oh joy is me.
Rental had the inspection done a few things need to be fixed but that is all. I am hoping I can get it all done in by going there for 2 days, although they will have to be seperated as I will have to take a storm window in to be fixed. At least that will come out of their damage deposit.

Gin - I've been to the beach twice in as many weeks thanks to the wonderful Mr. Potential. I pay for the gas to get over there and back, and he keeps me entertained and fed while I'm there, which makes it relatively affordable. And it helps me remember that there's life outside the store. I'm even mentally tossing around the idea of settling on the coast after I'm done with college. (I've always liked the coast and considering that it's one of the few places I don't have frequent severe allergic reactions, it's high on my list of potential places to settle)
Weekly update: I made up for last weeks failure by racking up 3 NSDs this week! Which brings my total for the month to 4 NSD!! I'd like to round out the month with two more (I know Wednesday will be a spend day, DOM, DSis and I are all going to the state fair)
Speaking of the end of the month, do we have a name for September yet? Have we done Smart Spending September before?

Sparsely Spending September? The leftover wind this morning has sent my NS calendar flying across the room... But it is a beautiful breeze. I need some morbid advice. DGM is scheduled to have a cardiac procedure tomorrow. They have put this off as long as possible because between her heart, lungs, and kidneys there is a good chance she will not make it, particularly if it means a second procedure. I still have the black dress I wore to my grandfather's funeral 3 years ago. I have worn it maybe once or twice otherwise if that. I had to buy a maternity dress because I could find nothing in plus sizes to fit. For the viewing we all dressed casually and jeans or shorts are considered acceptable. I am wondering if I should purchase a new dress or just use this one. I also have 2 black skirts- one fits and one is too large. I also have 2 that are too small. None of my black dress slacks fit. My aunt (having this info) asked if I had black or dark blue jeans (which I usually do) I do own dark blue jeans that could be worn with a dressy blouse or blazer, but whatever I wear has to be able to be worn with a flat shoe because of the cemetary. I know it's a morbid thought, but I have had to do last minute uneral shopping everytime I had a funeral to go to my entire life. And there is a cold hard reality with her procedure tomorrow.

Mizbear--funerals are not fashion shows. I don't think your DGM would want you to deal with extra expenditures, knowing how hard you are working to turn around your life. By the way, how is your schooling coming along? Have you been able to get back to it?
That said, I am glad to hear you came through the weekend safely. I hope the rest of your loved ones are safe a well. You are the first to check in, I hope the others affected by this storm will be safe and check in soon. I worried about redwagon all weekend. I hope she waits to travel.

ses- I have been worried about red too. You are right. DGM would not want me spending money if I do not have to. The dress material is a bit heavy (I almost melted in it even though it is short sleeve) but the skirt s a nice light material and I have tops to go with it. I guess I am still hearing the remarks made about my cousin wearing inappropriate attire to my grandfather's military burial 3 years ago (she was in the Army and not only did not wear her greens, she wore a too tight pair of capri pants and an even more too tight bolero jacket). I wanted to drag her out of the funeral home and hurt her. I had offered her a dress that would have fit her. School has been going slowly but is still going- right now I am working on over 1100 vocabulary cards- for one chapter.

If I remember correctly about where mrslynch lives, she was in a mandatory evac area. She probably doesn't have access to internet and may not have phone. Even if she was outside the mandatory evac zone, there are 10s of 1000s of people still without power, much less anything else right now. May be a couple of days before we hear from her.
I still have not figured out where the calendar blew to- but so much stuff blew everywhere, I will find it tonight or tomorrow- I can tell you I did pretty well with NS even though I maxed out the budget. Electric bills have been super high the past couple months.

mizbear - My grandma has a dress she jokingly refers to as her "funeral dress" because she's worn it to every funeral she's had to go to for about the past 5 years. And sadly, that's been a lot. No one is going to notice if you wear the same thing to this funeral as you did to another, and if they're tacky enough to notice they'd better keep their trashy mouths shut. FWIW, my Grandfather specifically requested no special clothing be purchased or worn to his funeral... everyone was to dress in their regular clothes for the day. He also left us instructions to get rip roaring drunk that evening... from the kids on up to Grandma!

way too much going on today to do a full post but if you can, say a prayer for Wilson. I don't know what happened but in the span of a 30 minute convo with my mom he went from regular energetic dog to sick. I'm watching him closely tonight and may need to go back to the vet tomorrow. He threw up and pooped in the house twice but the biggest worry is that he couldn't or wouldn't walk. almost think he was stung by a bee or something. He's acting like he just got out of surgery and can't move. Makes me worry because he's only 4 and very healthy so when he won't even walk I know something is wrong. (I couldn't find him for 5 minutes and searched everywhere. He was hiding under a chair in the corner of the room and I thought he'd died )

start; prayers and good health juju going out to you and Wilson. I hope nothing serious is wrong. Right now I am upset with DS and DIL. They leave their two dogs out in the rain. I know that rain doesn't hurt them but they are barking all the time they are out when it is raining. And the little one sits on the porch and shivers. I don't know if it is from the rain, thunder and lightning, or if he is cold. They get into their computer games and don't hear anything else. I tried letting them in one time. The bigger one will let me touch her and will stop barking when I tell her to but the little one yips as if I am beating the daylight out of him. I have never touched him even to pet him. He runs from me and stands in the corner of the room and barks at me. Has anybody heard from Honey? Doesn't she live in the New England states? I have to get my address book out and see who else lives there. I figured up my NS/CS and as far as I can tell I have 20 out of the 30 I wanted so I didn't make my goal.

Glad to hear our east coasters are doing good. Honey is just northwest of Boston. Hopefully, she made it through.
Start - Hugs. I hope Wilson is ok.
miz - Prayers for your Grandma this morning. Funeral attire (I know morbid thought). I just wore something I had. I did have to buy something for DS, but that was because he had nothing that fit that was not shorts or sweat pants. Plus, we are going to a wedding in less than a month. So, he'll get to wear it a couple times. Oh so, my other Grandma - mom's mom (who made me so mad throughout my dad's mom funeral) was like I haven't seen you in that dress before is it knew. Well Grandma, I wore it DS's baptism (which she was there for) and for our friends funeral (which she happened to be visiting that weekend, so she saw me then too). Plus there were pictures of me in the dress up on the boards because there were pictures of my dad's mom and DS's baptism. It was just a dumb complaint (one of my mom's mom's many dumb complaints).
Speaking of special occaison attire, we are going to this wedding October 1st. I have this dress that I have worn to 4 different weddings in the last 5 years (including one where I was 5 months pregnant, very versitile dress). My mom offered to buy me a new dress for the wedding. I was content just wearing that dress, but now I'm feeling sick of wearing that dress and am thinking something new would be great. Plus, I know we are invited to a wedding next year (not sure if we will go). The dress would be my birthday present for this year, but part of me is like I would rather get some new work clothes for my birthday (in November).

Glad our posters seem to have made it through the storm. I'm glad people prepared and it will be interesting to read if the deaths reported were true accidents (trees falling on houses) or due to risky behavior (driving through flooded creeks)
Wilson - seems to be better this morning. He got half a benedryl last night just in case there was something that bit him. I also made him sleep right next to me with my hand on his chest so I could feel he was still breathing - that's how worried I was. But he's back to running and jumping and playing this morning so I'll watch him before taking him back to the vet.
Sunday was a NSD, I need to calculate how many I have now.

I will need to be ALL IN for September the busyness of life is starting to rip a hole in my pocket a dollar at a time and that is the worse kind of leak because all of a sudden BAM you spent 200 non budgeted dollars!
I'll catch up soon.

Storm Update - Myself and my household are fine. There are a few downed trees in my neighborhood but we only lost power for brief spurts after the rains ceased. Our biggest issue, being on the East side of the eye was the wind. Not to say that the 7" of rain didn't make for a rather nasty day.
I had a small section of roofing that I had been waiting for the roofer to come and deal with for the last two weeks - as it is causing issues in the ceiling of the room below .. but of course he wasn't able to see to it before the storm. So Saturday evening found me nailing down a tarp to try and block some of the rain from getting inside. Not the prettiest job I have ever done but it worked.
THAT was fun ... NOT!!!
On a funny note I did think it was quite the introduction to the United States for my two new exchange students who arrived last week (one from Finland, one from Ecuador) .... "Welcome to the US ... that shaking? Oh just a mild earthquake .. and don't worry about all that wind and rain - just a baby hurricane".
The odd thing is that while we only had the power sputter a few times, just four blocks away they have been without since Sunday morning and may not get it back until tomorrow.
startsmart - LOL, thanks for that visual about what type of men women are attracted to. I needed that chuckle. Glad to hear Wilson is doing better.
Sorry to hear about the main client. Is this the woman with the drama queen boyfriend?
3cats - Sorry to hear about the money hit for your car. Still, if you can drive it another 5-6 years then perhaps considering it an "investment" might help. As for the dogs - it sounds as though both would benefit from being better socialized - actually it sounds as though the smaller one has not been socialized at all.
You have been on my mind a lot lately, and yes, I have been worried about you. Send me a note off-board if you would like to talk (quiltinglioness@juno.com) ... I have been getting the feeling that you are feeling blue and perhaps isolated again.
Under the heading of "Getting Things Off My Chest" - Whether anyone noticed, or cared, yes - I have not been as active on the board as I have in the past. There are two primary reasons for this.
The first is that I am not doing well financially for a variety of reasons - and either because I have been feeling ashamed, or guilty or just as though I have nothing to offer that has any veracity when I am feeling this close to the edge - I elected to say nothing at all. Or at least very little.
Secondly, I have been bothered for several months about some trends and dynamics I have seen. I know that change is inevitable in life: Life situations, jobs and relationships can change in the blink of an eye - others evolve more gradually.
I will be the first person to admit that I don't really like change - especially when it effects me personally. However given time and the space to process I usually adjust in the end. But I have been feeling this is not so much about "change" itself, but things said, or not said, that at first puzzled me, but have now become for me a major issue.
I understand that certain days generate a lot of posts and information, and some may feel overwhelmed by the volume. But I cannot say that quantity alone can account for one of my concerns. I have felt for several months now that some posters are either inadvertently overlooked or just outright ignored. I have seen newcomers, recent members and even long time posters receive NO acknowledgment of their presence - never mind their situation or request for information. Yet others seem to receive waves of responses and suggestions.
On a personal level this offends my deeply ingrained sense of fairness. I also empathize with why none of these posters would ever say anything - it would probably strike them as being needy, attention hounding and perhaps borderline desperate. This is becoming such a "thing" for me that I have found myself not only avoiding the boards and the NS/CS threads specifically - but seriously considered whether I should even continue to try and participate at all anymore. But before I took such a step I knew I had to pull back, observe, mull over and come to a place where I could express my feelings in a more rational manner.
I am still a bit on the fence as to what ultimately I will choose as best for me ... I just thought it was important to let people know what has been going on as I have found in the past that more than one person is usually feeling the same way - but no one has wanted to be the one to stand up and say anything.
