I have a question for you ladies, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse on the toilet paper, but what is correct? In the example posted over the past day or two (334 sf) others have said that this is 334 sf for the entire package of 12 rolls. Beachbum thinks it's 334 sf per roll.I don't have a package of tp in front of me to check, but does the package say if it's so many square feet per roll or per package? I understand how to figure out if it's a good stock up price, take the square foot number, moving the decimal point two places to the left, then compare that to the actual price, but now I'm just wondering about the per roll or per package unit of measure. Thanks. munjoyhill: Well, there's only ONE WAY to find out for sure and that is to go straight to the horse's mouth!! ;D I happened to have a package of Charmin in my stash, so I called the 800 number and asked. The square footage stated on the package is the amount that is in the ENTIRE package. This means that if the package says it has 334 sq. ft, then that is what it has. Here is what the rep told me (which does not completely add up, but it is what she said): Single Roll = 11.86 sq. ft./roll Double Roll = 23.72 sq. ft./roll (2x a single roll) Giant Roll = 29.65 sq. ft./roll (2.5x a single roll) Mega Roll = 47.44 sq. ft./roll (4x a single roll) And here is where that doesn't all quite add up. The Charmin TP at CVS is 16 double rolls. According to the figures that the rep gave me, the package of 16 double rolls should add up to 379.52 sq. ft., but according to the gals here it states 334 sq. ft. I suspect that they reduced the size of the package and Charmin CS just is not up to speed yet, but I can't say for sure. In any case, the answer to your questions is that the square footage stated on the package is the ENTIRE package. HTH ;D Thank you Dancin. Now why didn't any of the rest of us think to call the toll-free#.

suzi: Will it be like last time where all the unionized chains will be on strike at the same time? Do you have any idea which chains will be effected? I remember the last time this happened they were on strike at Safeway and Albertsons (where I lived on the Central Coast). I was able to live off of my stockpile and shop at Foods Co, which I guess is non-union. I think I only had to cross at Albertsons a couple of times, but it was a VERY LONG strike. I think a lot of times the union organizers talk the workers into striking and holding out for something that is not really in their best interest. A raise of $20/mo. in health premiums seems pretty reasonable to me for these times, but perhaps the cost of health premiums was bargaining chip in prior negotiations so who the heck knows? I hope for everyone's sake, it doesn't come to a strike. At $20/month, how long do you think it would take for those going out on strike to be losing more than the increase in health insurance premiums? In addition, I would imagine that most of the jobs in a grocery store could be replaced by many of those currently looking for work in CA. skubikky: You're absolutely right. Obviously we don't have all the details; but I doubt that in today's environment, striking is likely to benefit the workers.

I kind of see both sides of a strike, I know Kroger alone had a billion dollar profit and the CEO got their bonuses but they don't want to share with the employees that helped make the company money. ppffffffftttt! isn't that what happens in most large corporations all the time? heck, my firm profits well over a billion every year (it's one of the top 10 highest grossing in the world) but i certainly don't see a cent of that!

meli_beach said I used to buy Scott tp because of my septic tank and they always advertised that they had 1000 sq a roll. The big 24 roll pack would have big letters it was 24000 sq ft of tp. I also have lots of the marcal indiv rolls from that free deal a couple of weeks ago. They are small rolls and they say 109 sq ft. This are advertised as mega rolls. A 16 pack that only had 324 sq feet total would come out to 20.84 sq ft per roll. That would be a bunch of really small rolls! Have a bad day in the bathroom and you could use up a roll way fast! I didn't look at the ones in CVS though I just looked in my closet at all the TP there. I hope I am right other wise that gives a whole new meaning to the term individual serving size. Actually, Scott uses a different measurement than any of the other brands. They use a measure of "sheets." As in, you know that square of toilet paper you can tear off? That's what they call a "sheet." (Karma for the first person who knows the show this line is from: "I can't spare a square. I don't have a square to spare.")Anyway, a square that they are referring to is nowhere near a square foot. It's probably 1/3rd of a square foot. ETA: And, you'll notice that they now list their measurement as SHEETS not SQUARES, because they could run into issues with false advertising. All right ladies, you have me getting out my 12 pk. Scott toilet paper. Yes, it says 1000 sheets per roll but on the bottom of the front side, it says Total 1257.6 SQ FT. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, then $12.56 would be an OK stock up price? NOT! Kmart has a great deal going on this week on Scott products. Spend $15.00 get $5.00 off instantly. Buy 3 different Scott products and you get a $3.00 catalina, buy 2 different products and you get $2.00 catalina. Purchase 2 Scott T-paper @$5.49 and 1 pack paper towels same price = $16.47-5.00 instant savings=$11.47 minus 3 $1.00 MQ's = 8.47 minus 2.00 cat= 6.47 for 24 rolls of TP and 8 rolls paper towels. $6.47 divided by 3= $2.16 per 12 pack or $.18 a roll of toilet paper. If you divide that by the sq ft, you come up with $.0017 per sq. feet. Did I figure this out correctly? $2.16 of TP should last us around 60 days. I was anal (no pun intended) about figuring it out and a huge roll lasts about 5 days.

It is the ONE brand that DH asked me to never buy again. I bought a single roll as a filler at RA once and he did not like it at all. I don't have a K-Mart anyway, so it's all good.

I know you guys are going to kill me , but as long as we're talking about TP, I noticed that depending on the brand, one-ply and two-ply don't really mean that much either. I have RA generic two ply (the stuff we RAers got for free last January) and it is thinner and not nearly as soft as the Cottonelle one ply that we recently got at WAGs. I'm just sayin' - two ply does not necessarily mean it's higher quality or better.

Would someone help me figure out what the heck just happened? Last week I effed up my WAGs transaction and bought the wrong things thinking I was going to get a $10 RR. I got: Venus proskin razor $9.99 Venus proskin refills $14.99 Fusion razor $9.99 2 Sure deodoant $5.00 Advil PM $5.49 Caltrate $8.49 Robitussin cough/cold $6.99 2 Snickers bars $0.98 subtotal $61.92 less: Caltrate/robitussin BOGO 50% -$3.50 Manufacturer's Q's -$21 WAGs Q's -$2 RR's -$8 Q subtotal $34.50 Total OOP $27.42 received $4 RR I was expecting to get the $10 RR for the gillete products as well, but when I initially read it I didn't realize that the refills were included but the razors were not. So today I finally went in to return the razors and refills because they're not my preferred brand and I didn't want to pay that much for something that I don't really like much to begin with. I took the $4 RR I earned for purchasing the Venus razor with me, because I'm honest like that. The manager was very kind about processing the return for me. As he's getting the items entered, I spoke up and said "I know I had $4 off coupons for each of the razors, if that helps." He replied, "Oh, it doesn't matter, we get our money back from those anyway." And proceeded to hand me $34.97 back in cash!! He did take the $4 RR back and stapled it to his copy of the return, but seemed surprised that I brought it with me. Did I really just get paid $7.55 to take the rest of the products off their hands?! Disclaimer: I did NOT return the products with the intention of receiving more money than I originally paid for them. I fully expected to get back the price after coupons. I DON'T recommend returning products just to get more money back than you paid in. This was completely unintentional!

I kind of see both sides of a strike, I know Kroger alone had a billion dollar profit and the CEO got their bonuses but they don't want to share with the employees that helped make the company money. Yes, and I know that they should share with their employees. On the other hand, insurance premiums are skyrocketing. If they are asking for an extra $20.00 a month for premium insurance, I would give it to them rather than lose my job over it. It definitely should be interesting. I think it is sad behavior on both sides of the fence.

Possible strike: Perhaps those grocery workers should compare their insurance costs/rate increase to the rates and increases other retail workers have experienced in the last 2 years. We're non-union, I pay $126/mo for just myself (less $20/mo for being tobacco free), and our rates increased $20/mo last year. I'm scared to see what they look like this year... my company just went from publicly traded to privately owned. I have a feeling it won't be pretty.

I see this as a definite problem right now: the CEO's and managers making a ton of money and not wanting to share with the worker bees.
I served as the Chief Negotiator for my union many years. You really can't believe what is written in the newspaper. In fact, neither side is supposed to give out any of the nitty gritty details like "they won't agree to pay $20 more a month for health care". We were bound by a strict no talking outside of negotiations. I would assume it would be the same for them. Of course, you can say that health care, concessions, etc. are a part of the stumbling blocks but the details should not be leaked.
Our last negotiations went over two years. Yes, you read that right--two years. It took almost 9 months for them to give us the budget info we requested. We would have nego meetings (or no-go meetings, as I came to call them) and management would not be able to give us a straight answer w/o consulting with the President. Next meeting, still no response. After almost a year of this, we filed a grievance. At the hearing, the mediator told the management no-goers, that they had to come to the table prepared and with all the info requested, as well as the authority to negotiate, or she was going to summon the President to another meeting with her. Things went a bit better than that. With the budget figures, we were able to show them "where the money was", so to speak. They brought in the VP Business Services and she had nothing to say. She couldn't refute her own figures. Then they stalled AGAIN. In the meantime, the President left, the new one called in some auditors (because something did not smell right), and they found the VP Business had been making up figures! The reports were bogus. After the dust settled and we were able to review the auditors findings, we were able to settle. Management had their tail between their legs at this point but we ended up settling for a very reasonable contract. It was actually what we wanted to settle for two years earlier!! In the meantime, they hired a new President and, of course, gave him a $60,000 bump in pay from the previous guy. Typical.

Just an add on re the possible strike/$20 healthcare bump.
Healthcare is THE major issue in negotiations these days. One our our proposals was to have a prorated scale for employee contribution: the more your salary, the more you paid into your health care. Something like:
$24,000 -$30,000: X% or X set amount per month $30,001-$50,000: $50,001-60,000
You get the drift. Of course, management did not want this. Why? Because they would have had to pay more OOP. But they also made 3x-10x more than the regular staff. $20 a month bump to them is nothing, but to the guy making $24,000 year, it IS something. I don't know how much grocery store employees make, and I certainly don't know how much they are currently contributing; and I most certainly do not know how health care premiums can be contained. It has certainly gotten totally out of control.
It's funny because I really don't know why they asked me to be the Chief Negotiator. I'd only been there a short time and it was my first job in a union situation. It was interesting. There are good and bad sides to unions, just as there are good/bad sides to management.

dancin - I put off the return for a week and a half because I was anticipating a hassle. And I sort of felt guilty for making such a mess of a transaction and then taking half of it back. But the extra cash was a real blessing for me right now, so I guess I'll stop sniffing the gift fish. LOL.

Your "profit" was in the coupons that you redeemed that they did not deduct from the return. I would have done the same thing if I had been expecting a $10RR and did not get it. We all try to avoid returns, even though sometimes they work in our favor. Don't feel guilty. It's all good.

NAG: Anybody else on pinterest.com? I am totally addicted. I have found some of the most unique ideas for everything from decorating to style ideas. It's a really great place to "pin" all those wonderful sayings, recipes, etc you come across on the internet, into one really cool place...... i totally heart pinterest!!! I started an account last week and I'm trying to get into it, though I can't totally grasp how it works. It would help if I could add the pinterest button to my toolbar, but for some reason my computer won't cooperate. It's annoying to have to open up the site any time I want to add a webpage to my boards.

On hip2save today:
"Wowie!! Here’s yet another *HOT* Walgreens deal you may be able to score! Currently, when you buy one Gatorade 20 oz beverage priced at $1.70, you will get back a Catalina coupon valid for a FREE Gatorade Prime AND one FREE Gatorade Recover!
Even sweeter, once you redeem your FREE Gatorade Prime and FREE Gatorade Recover coupon, you will get back yet another Catalina coupon valid for another FREE Gatorade Prime and FREE Gatorade Recover! Wowie!! (Thanks, Wild for Wags & Meredith!)"
Apparently the price is lower than $1.70 in some stores too.
