Thanks Rick! I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that it isn't a tranny problem.

Thanks Rick! I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that it isn't a tranny problem. Most of the time its just the lock up solenoid, but it involves removing the side cover on the trans to replace, it can be a pain, you only have about 1.5 inches of room to get your hands in

Its sad, but most young folks wouldnt know how to even jack up a car let alone change a tire if they needed to. Im sure of he had read his paper work it would have said to retorque the lug nuts after 25-50 miles
I am glad my Stepfather wouldn't let me drive a car on my own until I could sucessfully change a tire on my own. He never wanted me to get stranded on the side of the road and be dependent on someone else. (I was driving before everyone had a cell phone!). Now I have AAA so I don't have to get dirty if it ever happens, but at least I know that I could do it if I had to.
Parents really should make sure that kids know some of the basics, like changing a tire, checking the fluids, putting air in the tires, etc.

'course, these days I just drive my car into the shop at work and ask (aka beg) someone put air in my tires or check my fluid levels but I always check to make sure it was done right.

The only symptom my car has is the engine light is on. The mechanic says the code is PO741 (that is an O like in Oh No not a zero) and sent me to a transmission place that says the transmission has to be re-built. I go for a second opinion tomorrow and may get a 3rd and 4th opinion before I spend up to $2,600. The car is 2002 Malibu with only 44,000 miles. I have never had anything done with the transmission before (like fluids or whatever). Can you help me? The car drives great.

It doesnt mean it needs and overhaul, but there is a problem in the trans. BRB with a decription of the code. Ok A p0741 is a code for torgue convetor clutch circuit. Ikle what i was explaining to Sparty. I dont know where you took it to, But I would suggest a GM Garage. They are the experts and it can be something as simple as a solinoid, or a whole convertor. But they are the ones that deal with those type of issue on a daily basis

When you say whole converter, does that mean the same thing as having the tranmission rebuilt? What is a GM garage? Is that the Chevrolet dealer I bought it from? I am a female. Thanks.

The convertor is the torque convertor. Its part of the Transmission. The tranny has to come out to replace it, but its not an overhaul. If it is the convertor the trans doesnt even have to be opened up. A GM Garage is a General Motors shop. Chevy, Pontiac, Old, GMC, any of the them. Or maybe I should have said any Obama shop lol ;D

BTW, what is a converter? Thanks. The torque converter is a fluid coupler. It acts along the same lines of a clutch, but with the fluid coupling it allows the engine idle without killing the motor and as the rpm increases the couping equalizes with the rpm

Actually, a Chrysler Jeep and Dodge shop would be an Obama shop - GM has paid back their loans. 'course being in bed with the government is nothing new for Chrysler. ;D

so this morning going into work the CAR - I mean the CAR not just the steering wheel was shaking at speed 50. At slower speeds not much of a shake, but getting up to 50 and 60 MPH the more the shake increased. This was on the start out. But by the time I got to work it stopped and I didn't notice it anymore. Actually I forgot about it when I got to work then saw the thread subject and just remembered I wanted to ask. So I was thinking the snow that was impacted into the custom rims off-set or threw off the weights on the rims to cause the vibration?

I would say it was Ice and snow also, alot of wheel like to trap snow and pack it in. As you drive it starts the throw it out

you may have lost a wheel weight, or caster-camber is off, sometimes the tires will wear out of round you can check that yourself, have wheel off the ground, using stationary device-pencil works good, spin tire with pencil almost touching tread and see if theres any runout. also could be alighnment

caster-camber is off
Caster , Camber will not cause a vibration

I agree that Rick is pretty impressive - and he doesn't even have to look under the hood to diagnose the problems. I would vote for him as resident mechanic.....

hehehehehe - It amazed me what women look for in men on the other thread Reminds me of the saying - beauty fades but dumb is forever! Today on my way home I was thinking about the price of gas. Do you have any suggestions to improve gas mileage since the price per gallon is getting out of control again?

Do you have any suggestions to improve gas mileage since the price per gallon is getting out of control again? I noticed it jumped 10 cents a gallon yesterday. The best advice I have is to quit driving. If you cant do that, make sure your tires are properly inflated, Clean air filter and all that Jazz. But in reality, if your car is running properly all thats going to save you is a few bucks a year

Yeah, when it got to $4 a gallon a few years ago, I stopped driving as much . However, it is 40 miles round trip to work and now I have a second dealership to deal with and it is 56 more miles round trip from work (although I get reimbursed). Mostly I try not to drive much on the weekends when it gets up there in price.

If you really wanted to save money, you could spend several thousand and buy one of those smart cars, like strapping a roller skake to your ass and take 10 years to save what you would have spent in comfort

I think I will pass on the Smart Car. My car isn't bad on gas - really - it gets 26 miles to the gallon so I really shouldn't complain. I am just cheap.
