Tell me about washing your car in cold weather. what to look out for A place to get a hot cup of coffee ;D Other than that, you need to make sure the locks dont freeze, blow dry ore get lock deicer, and its not a bad idea to take some baby oil and wipe down the door seals. It serves two puposes. 1 it will keep the sealf rom freezing to the car, and 2 it keeps the seals sofe and pliable and helps them seal and keeps them from squeaking

Ha I haven't seen a car wash since I moved here minus those shady ones with hand written signs in the city. Something tells me they don't have air dryers. The Excursions are road trip beasts. Admittedly I'm short but I can almost completely stand up in one of those. And yes, we already know I'm car stupid. Chances of me being able to get lug nuts off anyway are nonexistent. I do make my brother or dad do the air filters. Ha like I'm paying the dealer $10 to do it. Doesn't even require tools to get into it. Besides brother still has to do spark plugs. I found where I packed them at

Aha I finally find the paper so I can ask the serious question. When I got the oil changed they wanted to sell me everything. They wanted me to get the throttle body cleaned again. Found it on my records it was done in May for $57. No such thing exists on my service schedule. I had regular oil changes, etc done at dealers and no one mentioned this throttle body cleaning until 41.5k and now again at 64k??? Oh and they are getting 0.40 units or whatever for oil changes just for randomness I noticed on the bill.

WVUgurl - the .40 units is the amount of time the "pay" the tech for the job. At our dealership it is .20 which translates into a flat rate of $3.00 for the technician who does the work. .40 is 4/10ths of an hour or 24 minutes of pay. Most dealerships work on a system where the technician gets paid the "book rate" for the amount of time that it is supposed to take to do a job. They make the big bucks by being efficient - meaning they can do the work quicker than "the book" says it should take. And - whereas you would pay $89/hour (or so) the tech would be paid anywhere from $10/hour to $25/hour depending on their experience and their certifications.
The .40 units also is how they calculate the labor costs on your repair order. Most dealerships have a posted rate such as $89.00 per hour. Although some jobs are priced at a certain rate - such as $24.95 for an oil change. But if it is priced by the hour then it would be (approx) $35.60 in labor plus parts.
Probably more than you want to know!!!!!

suz I know there was just a convo on the old board about how many units dealers were paying for oil changes. That's what my comment was about. In one of my former lives as a public accountant I had a lot of car dealer clients.

You wont find a throttle body clean in your recommended service because the Manufactors figures a replace if you have problems. But as most shops have figured out, a cleaning will extend the life of the throttle body and pervent sticking. Omce a year, or depending on mileage and the quality of your air filter plays into it also

So with good air filters and changing them regularly would every 20k be excessive? Seems so but again as I've been reminded I know squat Just made me highly skeptical bc this is a dealership I've had it to many times in the two years I've had it and they didn't offer this up until 41.5k. In the two years I've averaged right at 30k/year and its mostly highway miles.

Sure is the same shop. I thought I had it done fairly recently so I declined since it was another $57 I hadn't planned on spending yesterday.

Thanks! Now I need to call and see if that service credit applies to parts. Why pay for air filters if I don't have to bc I guarantee I'm not using that $75 towards service.

Apparently they just can't read or are desperate to upsell. He had the filters (air/cabin) and the service record card. Unless they forgot to put it down, its on my receipt print out.

Admittedly I'm short but I can almost completely stand up in one of those. every year I keep wanting to make a video and post to You Tube the importance of keeping your car clean. My car is a show car so it stays pretty clean and waxed. But my girls car I wax maybe 1 to 3 times a year. For both cars when winter hits I want to show video how I can cut a line in the snow between the hood and front windshield and all the snow slide off the hood to the front of the car. Then chop a line across the top of the roof and rear window and all the snow slides down the window and off the trunk. Then push the snow off the roof to fall off the passenger side. Title the video how you know your car is waxed.

In one of my former lives as a public accountant I had a lot of car dealer clients. Sorry, I wasn't part of the previous conversations. Didn't mean to repeat things that were clearly already covered. The only reason I have been posting to these boards anyway was because I have been sick and bored. I will go back to just posting on the Smart Money threads. No sense in sharing information that no one wants to hear. I am appreciated there.

Rick, I hope you keep this up. I learn something everytime I look. I never heard the baby oil thing. Does any other oil work? I am not the biggest fan of baby oil smell. It is great on babies, but otherwise, a bit much!

I would stay away from automotive type oils, If you could find a Baby type wipe that has a better smell you could try that

Hey Rick, back when I had my old Chevelle I used to use Vasoline on the seals to keep them from dry rotting. I've got another one now so I'm curious if there is something better to use these days, not only for the Chevelle, but the newer cars as well....I'm looking at the seal on the sunroof on my Monte and it's needing some attention.

Baby oil is the best I have found. Im sure if you shop the car magazines they will have something also, but you can get baby oil anywhere
