Gidgetc13 9/16/14 $16,277.80 (6/28/09 $96,421.29, M1001)I did it! We finally paid off SL5!!!!! I am so unbelievably happy about that. That has always been the loan I have despised the most because of the high balance we started with and the high monthly payment. I can't believe it is actually done! DH got his paid in full letter this morning. He is now completely SL free (lucky guy). My original plan was to have that loan paid off last August, but then we found out we were expecting baby #3. Money that would have gone towards SL5 was diverted to savings and we had an amazing healthy little boy (Who is almost 1! How did that happen??). We had enough left in our maternity leave savings after I returned to work to pay off that loan, but then we had to replace our sewer pipe. The money left after my maternity leave was just enough to pay for the new sewer pipe. We then went through a few months of struggling to adjust to our new budget to accommodate our newest addition and our spending got out of control for awhile. But we got back on track and now that loan is finally gone!

gidget: Way to go!!! Hooray for a big monthly payment to be gone! I love those official payoff letters . chicg: I think I'd be tempted to combine the debt on a balance transfer. By doing this you may be able to save up a cushion for upcoming kitty expenses (I hope there aren't any more expensive ones). I like your idea of leaving your savings alone. I always get the brilliant idea of using my savings to pay something off sooner and then I tend to overdue it and money feels tight for a while, and I hate that feeling. Then I try to repay my savings and that just never seems to work.

The numbers are lower on this update because money usually gets tight around DS's birthday. We made it through that (how is my little dude 4 already??) and were in the process of getting back in debt paydown/savings mode when we got blindsided. Last Wednesday my grandma had a CT scan done (she was having pretty horrible pains in her abdomen, urinary tract, back and had been suffering from a UTI for about a month). Anyway, the CT scan revealed a softball sized tumor in her kidney. On friday, they went in to remove the kidney....and it was worse than they thought. The kidney was full of cancer, as was her lymph node and part of her renal artery. They removed all the affected area that day and sent everything off to be tested.
Recovery has been super rough on her and we are still waiting to hear pathology results (they were supposed to be back yesterday or today and they weren't). And then they are scheduling a PET scan to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else. It's been a lot of waiting, and I am not the most patient woman on Earth. I have been driving the 15-20 miles to the hospital every day to be with her. That plus eating with family in the cafeteria is dipping in to our "cushion". I told DH that money is the furthest worry from my mind right now, until we get the results and a gameplan for treatment/moving forward.
As hopeful as I am trying to stay..knowing what I know, I have a bad feeling about the cancer being elsewhere. So if any of you could spare an extra prayer, it would be much appreciated.

Update: 9-17-14 35683.30 (5-13-09 53883.21 P.331)
Looks like progress, but doesn't seem like it. When I see the numbers go down, its exciting, but overall, I still feel like I will never dig my way out. The progress seems so slow, like I am spinning my wheels over and over. Tired of being in debt and wonder if I will ever feel like I have any money?!@
Thanks for listening to my mini-vent.

And you've gotten rid of three payments each month. Also great! It looks like one or two more are going to disappear soon, too. Even greater!!

Thank you ladies. The pathology came back today and we got bad news. It's stage 4 and it has spread to the fat and muscle near the kidney, and to the renal vein. They want her to get in with an oncologist asap to begin treatment. They also did a chest xray today to check for nodules (apparently this type of cancer generally spreads to the lungs). We haven't heard back on the xrays yet, but im praying they are clear. She is handling everything like a champion, no tears and a good spirit. But idk how much more bad news she can take this week.

ezlivindreamer Have you already, or have you considered, physically cutting up all your credit cards? I know it's really nerve-wracking when you're used to having them as a safety net, but for some of us it's the only way to really get off the hamster wheel. I know because I had to do it! I had to go cash-only for everything for a year or two in order to get things under control.

So sorry to hear about the test results, Niki momofelliott - I totally sympathize with the hamster-wheel feeling. But we will get there!!! 7 days away from having this baby We are about as ready as we will ever be. Only thing I am not stocked up on is food, but we have plenty to last us a week and I know people from church will bring meals anyway, so we should be set. Which means 10 more weeks until I am back at work and can start to wrap my brain around racing again. For now things are set up on auto-pay and just humming along. I've set up or pre-paid October so I won't miss anything in the newborn brain fog. DH has some big things at work that could come through which would be awesome! And I applied for a new job that I interviewed for last Friday and should hear by the end of this week if I got it or not. Trying to not get my hopes up, but it would be nice.

DH's Discover is really picking up speed all on it's own. I made the minimum payment and he had a reimbursement check from work to apply to it. Since September 1 we have been on a financial lockdown (we put our credit cards away and only use one for gas). So far it is going well and just one hickup of $55 and it looks like we should be able to pay that off at the end of the month. Sam: It's so exciting that you will be meeting your little guy soon! Minnesota: Wow on your race! So wonderful to know the end isn't too far away

UPDATE: CrazyLady14: 9/26/2014 0 (1/15/2009 141,009 M751)
I had to bold it, it needs some glitter and sparklers around it. WIR Racers, Sorry if I’m being vague, but I don’t want to re-publicize all the details. It has been a long hard road. I’ve learned that money is unimportant compared to health, yet essential to having a good night’s sleep (without stress). I feel guilty even telling you all that this has come to such a quick end and thought about just going inactive. I can’t even believe our race is ending. We have spent years getting by day to day and money cannot replace what was lost. So we are putting the grief behind us, appreciating what God salvaged, and are going to concentrate on taking care of our long term needs. I have to focus on my health the stress has ruined it, DH needs a care plan should anything happen to me, and the kids should start looking at colleges. The funny thing is, after all of this our monthly budget is changing by $80/month (and it’s all going to groceries).
I will continue to cheer you on, but I may be back to race someday. My car is 14 years old, we were able to wipe out debt, but we are not able to purchase a new to us car. Potentially moving, AKA searching for new job, is why I returned to school this summer. DH has been researching alternative medicine and we need to take a few vacations, but we are seriously thinking about moving to a more considerate state after the youngest completes high school. So at that time another mortgage may be raced.
I wish you ladies the best in finishing your races. It takes strength and dedication to stay focused while managing daily needs, Mr. Murphy emergencies, life changing events, and evil marketing tricks every time you walk into a store. Many of my real life friends don’t even have a budget, or know how much debt they have, let alone commit to reducing it with every single update posted. You are the strongest ladies I know. I am honored that you shared your stories and journey with me. Ners, We’ve been playing leapfrog for years and I’m really sorry for doing this to you. I’ll continue to see you on the Get Fit Board, and promise I won't willingly get a “0” all of a sudden. Seriousthistime, Thank you for the informative website. I’ll be joining you on the Savers Board once I get organized.

I’ll be joining you on the Savers Board once I get organized.

crazylady14- do not be a stranger. I will keep plugging away at my debt. Most of which is a mortgage.
Congratulations on finishing your race
